How to WINDPROOF light stands with a StandDaddy™ A "better than DIY" piece of grip equipment

StandDaddy is a “better than DIY” piece of lighting grip equipment that features an unbreakable collar that uses inexpensive barbell weights to stabilize your light stands or tripods.
It is very important to windproof your light stands when you are shooting on location if you don’t want to risk damaging hundreds or even thousands of dollars with of lighting or camera gear.
Light modifiers like umbrellas or parabolic reflectors or beauty dishes weren’t really designed with outdoor shooting in mind. We’ve all seen what happens to an umbrella in the wind - add a light stand and an expensive speedlight or monolight with a battery pack and you have a recipe for disaster.
For decades the standard solution for photographers has been sandbags draped over the legs of a light stand. More recently similar bags have emerged that let you add weights, but like the sandbags, these tend to place the weight near the center and don’t really offer much counterbalance. Plus they are awkward and bulky to transport to your location shoot.
The StandDaddy has a one inch hole that will accommodate most light stands. and it supports any standard barbell exercise weight plate also with a one inch hole. It is made with an industrial grade composite material that renders it virtually unbreakable with normal use and it comes with a lifetime warranty for a full replacement if you break it.
Simply slide your weight over the leg of your stand and slide the StandDaddy on and tighten the thumbscrew. There is no need to over tighten the screw and the screw won’t damage or dent your stands - even the cheap ones.
In this video I will show you how I use the StandDaddy with LumoPro LP180R speedlites and Paul C Buff Digibee 800’s.

Joe, I have enormous respect for you and this is a fantastic idea. Here comes the "but" ...this is the same as standard universal metal collars which are already readily available for various non - photography related purposes in various shapes and sizes and generally cost less. Regarding their convenience on location versus sandbags, sandbags are easier to transport than gym weights which need securing or containing to stop them sliding around in your car and are soft so won't damage anything if they do, just throw them in the 'trunk' and your good to go. I would also be slightly concerned about the damage the screw might do to my light stand legs in the long term when tightened. Lastly, my DIY solution has always been fitness ankle weights, essentially the same as sandbags but I, like most people, already had some gathering dust in my garage as did my friends whom gladly donated theirs to my cause. I hate to sound all Dragons Den / Shark Tank, it's still a pretty good idea all things considered, I'm just not sure I would invest too much into it if I was its creator.

Relax Pascal Krell the tutorials never went away. I can't grow just by doing what I always did. Livestream technology has great potential and also a massive learning curve. The last five months have been that learning curve. Now TogChat is one night per week - I can also use the Livestream technology to do live online workshops AND I'll be back to turning out tutorials every week. Thanks for hanging in there with me!

I sometimes bring a gallon water jug along: makes a heavy weight with the thumb loop for bungie-ing to the tripod or stand, and when you're done, you can usually pour the water out on the ground or into a sink or something if you don't want the weight, or need to lessen it for balance... Wherever you have people, you generally have access to water nearby, so often it's possible to pack empty jugs and fill/dump them on locations.

Joe I have a solution that nobody Ive seen has thought of. I think these are a great idea but I don't like the idea of extra weight and I think the solution I found may be lighter, faster and cheaper. I use a spiral dog stake and a tie strap. As long as you are on good ground it works excellent. It's lite and quick to move and cheap. Just wanted to share. In other places of course these would work better ( on cement etc)

That will stick the stand to the ground. But I am thinking if there's any way to make stable stand but easier to move from one place to another (mobile). Adding detachable wheels?

Joe Edelman Cool, do they ship to the UK, Amazon UK doesn't list them sadly 😯 I guess an alternative to this although not as good would be to use the barbell locking collars that are normally used to secure the plates to the bar. Of course your stand leg diameter would need to be exactly 1" for these to work so probably not ideal lol.

$10/each + $0.50/lb for plates(a good price for USED plates), works out to about $37.50 to add 15lb of weight to a stand. While it is a nice solution, it seems a bit expensive and transporting the plates around could be a pain even with the handle due to their bulk. If your tripod and/or light-stands are designed to hang a center weight(sand bag style), you can use hydration bladders with carabiners for weights. A $30 6liter bag weighs about 14lbs when full, rolls up small when empty, and you can find water to fill them almost anywhere.

Not really Jimmy Hill. In sets of four and eight they are much cheaper - not to mention there is a 20% discount for my viewers - its in the description of the video. For me - I have no desire to walk around looking for water once I am on location. I prefer to pack to be self sufficient and ready to go.
@jimmyhill9591
@jimmyhill9591 7 жыл бұрын
I'm not knocking the product, it does seem well thought out and constructed. I also understand that on more remote locations one may find it difficult to find water for the system I described. Since I like to travel light(actually small, weight isn't my issue, packing as much into 1 carry on sized Pelican case as possible is), it still seems like it would be too bulky as there is no way to reduce the size of the weight plates. It(StandDaddy) is certainly a solution worth considering.

Once you use and understand C stands with sand bags everything else seems cheap. You can also rent C stands about any place you travel to.

No disagreement there Steve Holt - but C-Stands are not at all practical for a photographer working solo on location. There are MANY needs that require different solutions. If C-stands work for you - awesome! I think its pretty obvious this video wasn't addressed to people who are in the habit of using C stands.

Yes, happens to me more often than I'd like, I tend to (politely) ask someone to hold it for me while I shoot my subject(s). Although that's an ingenious solution, it still doesn't get rid of the fact I'd have to carry 1,5 to 3 extra Kg in my already heavy bag, not helped by the fact I don't have a car. I'll keep using people, or.. you know, local stones. Good tip though, might get these instead of bags in the future, much more practical. And yes, he should sell them in sets of 3, not 4. Kind of obvious that one, unless he's intently selling it in 4 packs so you have a spare in case you loose one.
