Thank you for the perfectly assembled video. I am a patio beginner Gardener (mainly for food), in Houston,tx. So containers are what I am allowed to use on my limited space (5X5), I have a small greenhouse where I grow mostly herbs for cooking and medicine. I enjoy seeing good content for education, I have made errors and killed many plants but your videos are an encouragement. Shalom

Thanks for the kind words. If I were gardening strictly on a patio, I would consider Earthboxes: kzbin.info/aero/PLutBw50GI1zw2Oir_yEyz8x4yVckWH7Gg I really like them.

15 degrees is on the schedule for Dallas. The Wife and I spent all day doing the "Plant Dance" (moving the Wife's plants indoors. We even took plants out of our small winter green house for fear it wouldn't be warm enough. Three days we are scheduled to be below freezing. I can't remember the last time we went that many days below freezing. I remember it happening in the 1980s when I lived further south. Lots of folks had a lot of plants that didn't comeback that spring.

We got down to zero degrees in 80 or 81. I'm sure that's what you are talking about. Brutal. Yep, they probably wouldn't survive in the greenhouse.

Tonight's revised forecast: channel 11 is saying 8 F and WFAA channel 8 is forecasting 5 F for Monday. It seems the closer we get to Monday the lower that temperature keeps getting. A great man once said "HOLD ON TO YOUR BUTTS. IT'S GONNA BE A BUMPY RIDE". :)

That is the best advice out of all the videos that I have heard so far, I’m gonna go with this method, talk to the nursery right around the corner, a few of then actually, then follow what they do, thanks very much for this info

They would give it a thumbs down because they watched it for specific advice on how to overwinter container plants and this person is telling us to go to a nursery to find out. If he can't answer the question, don't post a video titled "HOW TO WINTERIZE YOUR CONTAINER FRUIT TREES AND BLACKBERRIES WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?"

Do you know of anyway that I can keep my watermelon vines from freezing ?…its supposed to be 34*F next Tuesday nite and 30*F next wed night … still have 10 melons in the field …and will the melons be ok if I put syrup tubs over them …
@BIGALTX

Turn a sprinkler on them... all night if you have to. That usually prevents them from getting burned in a frost

But how do YOU do it? or IF you do. I've struggled with Celest Figs and Turkey Figs for 5 years now. They die back and come up late spring. I get little figs that never ripen so I'm thinking I'll have to either protect them or get a greenhouse in some way. I will talk to my nursery. I was hoping you may have given ways in this video. :( I'm in Northern middle Tennessee.

You get a LOT colder than I do (normally). I don't do anything, BUT... this morning it was zero degrees F. So... I'm not sure what will happen to the figs. Mine, even the 6 year old trees in the ground, will probably die back to the ground this year. They had a heavy layer of mulch and snow, so that might have protected the roots, but probably not the branches. I planted all these figs in the ground shortly after making this video. Glad I did. Not sure how they would have handled this cold weather in the pots. This is a once in a lifetime winter situation in ETX... so I'm not sure what is going to happen. I might lose all my fig cuttings and blackberry cuttings too... just not sure yet. There ARE fig varieties that do better in colder climates. Do some research and see if there are any that would do better in your zone. Hope that helps. alan

Zone 8b East Texas. Thinking about container fruit trees. Getting my first satsuma when this cold snap is done. My nursery is protecting it for a couple of weeks for me. BTW, I think I may have kin folk in your neck of the Wood.

Good idea, but I think the expense would outweigh the benefits. Buying all that for just a once in a year, or decade event doesn't seem worth it.

I live in west Texas they don’t grow the trees here they get them from Tyler Houston etc.... I have some fig, mulberry, apples, peach and apricot trees, any advice for me? Thanks!
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 2 жыл бұрын
You're climate is so different from mine, I'm not sure Just make sure you have an irrigation system, fertilize and prune regularly Figs need very little pruning. Peaches, apples and Apricots need winter (dormant) pruning

When talking winterize are you referring to the roots or the trunk and branches or both??
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 жыл бұрын
Everything. The nurseries don't "wrap" the trees (unless they are citrus, or tropical) Just do what the nurseries in your area does, for the specific tree or bush you have, and you'll probably be ok.

Alan, I have 10 plugs of PA Freedoms. They came in 3 days ago and are still moist. I am just south of you in Conroe. Can I go ahead and plant them in my wicking tubs even tho we are getting the cold front (low 30's) this Friday/Saturday, 2-12??
@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX 3 жыл бұрын
Probably can... but I'm going to wait till the cold front is gone. I think you're going to get a lot colder than lower 30's. Monday you might be in the mid 20's... I think. I'd put them in the house, but keep them moist (if it looks like they are drying out)

@BIGALTX
@BIGALTX Жыл бұрын
I don't do anything different for my containers But... these trees are in the ground now These Figs would never have survived 2021 winter in containers without some insulation. Still lost 20% even in the ground Figs don't like extreme cold weather
