Thanks for this mate, I've got a Harley Benton RB-414 which is wired strange where one of the volume controls if turned down halfway kills the signal completely. I'm told that's the way Gibson wires their guitars these days. Anyway got my CTS pots (250k's A & B), got my Switchcraft jack, got my Orange Drops, made my template and only waiting for the Switchcraft pup selector. Can't wait to get started. One thing I'll say about how all these guitars are wired including Rics is (for me) that the volume and tone control for the bridge is further forward than the neck controls so I'm going to fly in the face of convention and wire mine so that the neck controls are further forward on the plate. Convention's there to be broken right? Anyway you shouldn't be giving away your secrets but I'm so glad you shared. I didn't buy my stuff from you for this upgrade as I only just saw your channel after I'd bought them but seeing as you're only 20 miles away, in the future I'll be hitting you up first. Thanks again.

Followed this video for a rewire. Took me about 3 hours. Taking out old electronics, the guitar required re-drill for the new POTs, made quick wiring jig to wire outside the guitar. Working with the braided wire was a bit finicky as it conducts heat really well, meaning the shrink wrap can squeeze down before one would want. Causing some frustration if you're after a clean setup. Then I installed the new setup and used seymourduncan.com/wiring-diagrams to get the setup for the pickups I have.

First, yes to Diego's comment, and funny. I bought a 2009 SG Standard recently. The luthier thought the switch was bad, turns out it is the circuit board, which he claims is inferior, and if he can't get a circuit board replacement, am I best advised to have the guitar totally rewired?

Could you just wind more ground wire around the braided wire at the jack? Similar to how you grounded the switch to the braided wire? Or is there a specific reason you can not?

One quick question....why 4 audio (Log) pots? Why no linear pots for volume? Is it for the quick roll off on the volume? I'm rewiring my sg from a kit and deciding on what pots to get. Thanks in advance. I use my guitar for practice at lower volumes only....so maybe log pots for volume will work better? Great video BTW. Thanks for making them. Been a great help.
@SixStringSupplies Жыл бұрын
Just personal preference - my brain and ears are used to a quicker response. You can use linear for volumes but wouldn’t recommend for tone controls
@jimmygreen50 Жыл бұрын
@Six String Supplies thanks for the reply. I will likely go with linear for volume as I practice at lower volumes. Cheers.

Excellent explanation anmd instruction video with cool tips and techniques. Thank you. Question: the Stew mac wiring diagram shows it differently (#0133 Les Paul Wiring Kit and #0125 SG Wiring Kits). Is yours different for a reason?
@wizzyfizzy332 жыл бұрын
Theoretically, could you run a non-braided sleeve cable to input jack and then a seperate series of cloth cables as grounds to the ground on the input jack? Not sure if that makes any sense, but essentially I mean using standard cloth cable as the ground.

I've got a toggle that looks quite different than this switch craft. Mine appears to not have a ground lug. Its a Stew Mac metric right angle switch. There are three lugs with the two to each side having two thin lugs about 1mm apart but not touching. Then there is a very small central lug and that's it. ? It seems like there are the two that go to the pups and then the hot. Where is the ground? is it part of the hot? I'm accustomed to switches rather than toggles.

Thanks and glad you enjoyed the video. Electronically, the SG, Les Paul and 335 are all identical. It is the same circuit. The spacing between pots/switch/jack etc...is the only difference.

Does this mean that you dont have to ground from the bridge?
@robertruamps56803 жыл бұрын
No the bridge will be grounded to the neck volume pot once the harness is installed in the cavity as well as the pickups.
@rickfrazier11485 жыл бұрын
Sorry if this has already been asked, but why not go to the closest pot first with the ground?
@SixStringSupplies5 жыл бұрын
Generally it’s difficult due to the layout of the internal cavity. It’s easier to solder it to the tone pot. Cheers

good job but here's some tips...1., LABEL everything for us newbies on the template board. 2., use a brighter wire against the background--the black gets lost immediately onscreen. 3 explain the second soldering loop on the jack better (like, why?) 4., keep your hands out if the way (maybe use some tweezers or hemostats) 5. stop spinning things around so fast--it's easier for you but confusing as hell for us. 6., explain the complete ground circuit versus the hot lead circuit, and what all each has to touch, and why. But thanks, I did learn a lot.

so if I copper foil the cavity ………. I am going to stop and say this is first sg wiring. Done strats in past. Ok my body came fully drilled and painted I copper foiled the cavity put pots in and wired up there was no hole to the bridge to ground and I could not think of what to do with the ground wire. That would go to the claw on a Stratocaster. So I crimped a washer to it and screwed it to the inner wall in the cavity threw the copper foil. will this work? it has two humbuckers split coiled and each pick up is grounded to the pot and each pot is grounded together from the 3 way switch.
@SixStringSupplies5 жыл бұрын
yeah as long as it is grounded :) lot of people use a grounding washer and connect all grounds to it. The trem claw/bridge does need to be though.
@captaindeadpool16405 жыл бұрын
@@SixStringSupplies Thanks for the response to my sloppy post. Sorry I should proof read. So on a SG do I have to ground to the bridge I got it all wired and had no hole to put the ground wire threw to the bridge so I just copper wrapped the cavity and all the pots are grounded to each other and the main ground I did not know what to do with it so I crimp a washer end and screwed it to the side of the wall threw the copper in the cavity . I figured it's hitting raw wood and the bridge it's pushed into and touching raw wood. Will this work? Thanks.
