Thank you for the tutorial. I have a question. My lamp had a "normal" (not foot) switch, for which both cables have been cut (neutral and power). But the foot switch that I bought requires the neutral cable to be uncut. Can I join both ends of the neutral cable and secure that with isolation tape, or would that be unsafe? Hope you get what I mean, it's a bit hard to articulate this in my second language :)

If you can, completely replace the lamp wire. Lamp wire is relatively inexpensive. While splicing the wire could work, over time, the splice (where you joined the wires) could become loose since the only thing holding it together is the insulated tape. Once loose, the splice could begin to arc, which could result in a fire.

Do you have a wiring diagram for the Panthella Floor lamp, with the floor lamp switch integrated into the base of the lamp..?

I've got a lamp with the low profile style switch seen in this video. The switch itself has begun getting very hot to the touch, and the lamp actually turned itself off earlier. I was able to turn it back on by pressing the switch a few times, but I unplugged it and have stopped using it until I can figure out a repair. Is this "hot switch" indicative of a short somewhere inside the switch, or could it be something else? Thanks for the video.

JR, electrical wires getting hot is not a good thing. It was good you unplugged it. If it were mine, I would open the switch and make sure the two ends of the wire were still properly secure. Gently pull on them to be sure they stay in place. The wire is likely stranded and I would look closely to be sure that all strands were secure inside the switch and not sticking out (that is why I use ferrels). I would make sure the neutral wire that wraps around inside is not nicked and the insulation is fully intact. If that is ok, I would look at the lamp cord/wire itself. Is the wire damaged were it goes into the plug? Look at every inch of the cord and look for damage. People walking on cords, pets chewing on cords, people bending cords too much can damage them. I would then look to be sure the lamp cord is still properly wired to the lamp itself. If all that looks ok and when you have time to watch it, plug the lamp into a different receptacle on a different branch circuit (different circuit breaker). If the lamp still gets hot, replace the lampholder in the lamp AND replace the lamp cord AND replace the switch. If the lamp does not get hot but works fine, you may have arcing in the receptacle itself or somewhere in the branch circuit and unless you are extremely comfortable with diagnosing such problems, you will want to contact a licensed electrician. Be forewarned, it could take time even for an experienced electrician to track down an arcing issue. But arcing is a major cause of electrical fires.

I have a 2nd hand lamp and need to replace this switch, the neutral wire had been cut previously. Do I need to rewire the whole floor lamp?
@Around_The_Home2 жыл бұрын
Short answer: When working with electricity and if there is any doubt about the integrity of an electrical component, replace it with new. Long answer: Not exactly sure of the situation, but while a lot of lamps do not have a ground, they must have both a hot and neutral. And when using the push button switches shown in this video, only the hot wire is cut. The neutral remains intact. It it were me, I probably would replace it since lamp wire is relatively inexpensive. I replace lamp wire even if the wire is intact but the insulation has become stiff due to age.
