Learn the basic wiring of variable frequency drives / VFD with our electrician Steve Quist. In this video, we used the very popular Mitsubishi D700 series VFD, showing single phase and three phase wiring instructions. The VFDs showed in the video are the D720S (230V single phase) and the D720 (230V three phase). We strongly recommend using a certified electrician to set up your VFDs. If you are doing this on your own, make sure you wear protective gear and take proper precautions.

By grounding via cable to a ground star bar, does having the VFD case grounded to the control panel backer not cause a ground loop by having two grounds come from the drive?

I just added a VFD to an old CNC I have. Its your Mitsubishi. Thanks for showing how to get the main power cover off. Now my problem is this. The 4 lead wire that came off the spindle motor to the FWD rev relay only had the 3 power wires going between motor and controller. The ground lead from the motor went straight to the grounding area of the enclosure. Now my wire is not long enough to get to the VFD in the cabinet. Is it good enough If I just run a grnd from the VFD to the grounding area of the cabinet? Should I just say, start from the beginning and get a dedicated VFD to motor wire? Wire would have to be about 8' long.

The part I am getting tripped up on is how to wire in a switch to the line side going into the vfd so I do not have to leave it on constantly. From what I can gather I will need a DPST switch rated for the correct amperage but I can not seem to find any 2 articles or opinions that say this is the correct way to configure the switch. Some say that a switch will always burn out others say they have had a switch on theirs for ages. My manual does not list any control ports for a power switch and i I understand it correctly it goes as far as saying that a switch should not be used to control the run/stop of the drive. I take that to mean that you should not use a switch to put the unit under a load not just powering the unit on but I am admittedly getting a little cautious. Any guidance would be appreciated.

In video you connect red and black to L1 and L2 witch are hot. Each wire provides 120v. You connect green wire as ground. Where does the neutral white wire connect ? I'm wiring a TECO E510 VFD. 240 volts single phase input power to power a 240 volt 3 phase motor.

Eslam, you will need a three phase motor. VFD works with three phase AC/DC electric motors.

If you are trying to program Mitsubishi VFDs, check our video library and you will find other videos showing some basic programming. Every brand of VFD has different terminology, so we can't answer what F, H, A means unfortunately. For any programming specific for your machine, you will have to consult your manual for the parameters or find a local electrician who has experience with VFDs.

You'd be most likely able to drive any VFD with arduino - it's controls are like analog input for speed control and digital inputs for rotation direction, emergency stop etc.

Shahbaz, this is an AC VFD pairing with AC motors. If you have a DC VFD, you will need a DC motor. The wiring might be different since the VFD is manufactured by a different company. Emerson makes great DC VFDs.

Robert is right. It’s 3 hot phases for - 3 phase. Sometimes there’s a neutral in addition, if 120 is being taken off one phase.
