What I don't get is the fact that the XLR jack and plug both have three connection points. Why have three solder connection points (pins and pin receptacles) if you only end up soldering two of the pins together anyway? Technically that makes it a two pin jack and plug. I am guessing that the third pin is used for the 48 volt phantom power if the particular mic is a condenser mic that requires the phantom power to operate...then again, I am just guessing here. It would make sense in that case.

Don't need that much solder mate. Heat the joint and allow the wire to draw the solder in. All that excess on the outside is not needed.
