Hello there. Thanks for the awesome video, very clear information. I have a situation here that I don't know if I will be able to make it work. I have a RV that has a couple of batteries inside and a solar panel on the roof, and they charge through a DC-DC charger that has a MPPT controller and also allows me to charge the batteries while the engine is running. Now when the RV is stopped, with the engine not running, I rely only on solar. The solar panel on the roof, that the DCDC with MPPT is connected to, has 170w, and that sometimes is not enough for my appliances. So I was wondering if I could connect another solar panel to the batteries when I need more power. The second solar panel I want to connect is a portable one, has 200w and has a PWM controller. I would connect it directly to my batteries through some wiring I made, as you depict in your video. Given the differences on the controllers, do you think that could work? I don't think thay the controllers are programmable. Could I end up damaging my batteries? Thank you again!

Good video. You can use different brands of charge controllers as long as, as you say, that they are programmable. I've even used a Schneider/Xantrex PWM C40 CC with a Morningstar MPPT, but I had bulk, absorb, and float settings the same. As for different voltages/amperage panels, in Series the amps should be about the same because voltage adds. While in parallel, the voltages should be about the same as the amperage is added together. Like you say in parallel a lower voltage panel will pull down a higher voltage panel, least common denominator basically. In series, a lower amp panel will pull down a higher amperage panel. It's a bit complicated for most, so it's best to keep like panels together on the same CC.
@yankey43 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Yes your right there. But to keep it simple and safe. Best not to do it. For the cost of PV now you can just add one more CC and get so much more. Back in the day it was worth it. Now it's not. So I did not cover that in this video. Well to keep it simple and to keep the video time down. BTW hope this did not come over as me sounding like a jerk. Your 100% right. We did that for years. Hell my old mans place is still wired like that. Haha. God Bless

I get very confused when systems with different voltage AND amperage are somehow tied together. in the first diagram 6:30 would you say that the two series connected systems are connected to the battery parallel? What voltage range would the battery bank need to be in order to allow both systems work in optimization?
@yankey4 Жыл бұрын
So that's why I did not put volts of the battery's. This would be a series connection. So Pos to neg. If each battry was 6 volts. This would be a 12 volt setup. If they where 12 volts each it would be a 24 volt setup and if they where 24 volts each it would be a 48 volt setup. I made this to show a typical setup. Not to be showing a specific voltage setup. Ie 12 24 48 volt.. The solar also could be 12 each so that makes 24 volts or 50 volts PV. would be 100 volts. As long as the PV volts are higher than the bat bank and your using MPPT Cc. This will work.. MPPT must have a higher volts in from solar than the batts. Sorry spelling on my cell and hard to see. Hope this helps some..

Bobby - would a combiner box work to do what your bus bar configuration is showing? Hoping to keep the system configured where a breaker or fuse will trip prior to the inverter. Our problem is setting up a (2) Absolyte GX 48volt/2,000 Amp hour (AGM) telecom battery banks and keeping them full. We will have well above 12kw-15kw in solar panels/strings and knowing if a string of panels is not going to shut the entire system down is worrisome.

Great video. I am thinking of doing this with my small array so that I can flatten the curve and have more consistent power production throughout the day I'm thinking of facing 2panels facing SE and 2 panels facing SW. This would mean morning sun max And evening sun max and combined power at noon. Of course my power output will be less but it will be continuous instead of only peaking for 2 or 3 hours a day. This should allow my freezer to run directly from solar most of the daytime hours and only rely on the battery at night.

It's never been a bit of trouble. Hell now inviters come with more than one CC in them. They do the same as I show in this video there just all in one..

Bobby, educate me. If my battery has a bulk charging limit of 30 amps, normally I would apply a 30 amp charge controller and know that I won't exceed that limit. BUT, if I hook up a number of independent charge controllers in parallel, what is going to limit the current? If I hook up a couple of 30A (or even 20A) charge controllers at the same time, with the same programming I will exceed the bulk charging rate by a long shot.

I have 5 batteries and 2 charger controllers atm not connected to a buss. Should i have them connected to 2 different batteries or the same one? Or even on opposite ends of the bank?
@yankey44 жыл бұрын
If no Buss bars then I would do opposite ends. This will help keep the wires down on the batts. Letting you keep the wires tighter. Is this lead batts or Lipo? If Lead it works best to keep the on opposite end of the batts. When you get a buss bar it will be fine. Most trouble comes from not getting the wires tight. So this helps..

@@dylanstuckless5669 Wow 10 AWG is small. I would go with bigger wire. You do know that a set of buss bars cos like 24 bucks each. I am still puzzled some say there is no 12, 24 or 48 Volt panels and that how you hook them up is what determines the volts and amps coming to CC.
@yankey42 жыл бұрын
So there are 12 24 and 72 volt and even higher voltage PV modules. The more cells in a PV modules for the most part the higher the out put volts. This is not 100% the case. So what is true is this. Each cell is about 3.2 volts. So if we just series 4 cells. That would give us 12.8 volts. So the more cells in series the higher the out put volts are. This the lower the amps. Hope this helps some.

Hey Bobby, quick question about the PIP inverters. The low voltage battery disconnect has a default of 21V, but I change mine to 23 V in the settings. If the batteries run down to 23V at night, the inverter shuts off, but when it gets back to daylight, the inverter switches back on to start charging and it will eventually start producing power again when the batteries get a bit of charge. However, the low voltage battery cut off defaults back to 21V. So the next time the battery is getting low the inverter shuts off at 21 V instead of 23V and this is not good for me because my batteries tend to get out of balance at the lower end. The low-voltage cut off seems to be the only Setting that goes to default whenever the inverter turns off, everything else seems to be saved in memory except that. Have you or anyone else had that experience or know how to solve it?
@yankey44 жыл бұрын
Mine will let me set it to 20 volts and stay there. So I do not know why yours would do that. I have not ever had someone ask me that nore have I seen it. I am sorry about that..
@yankey44 жыл бұрын
Have you tryed to set it to like 24 volts? Then see if it will stay there? I know mine is set for 20 volts but I do not hit it as I am on grid. So when the Pip hits 22 I go back to grid at 22.. At 20 It cuts off and then needs to rechager like you say. Sorry about this. I wish I was more help..
@geoffreyberry95804 жыл бұрын
@@yankey4 I have not tried 24 V specifically, but I've done different voltages between 22 and 23.5. I don't think it's going to make much of a difference because once the inverter turns off, whatever settings I had for that particular value goes back to default 21v. My inverter doesn't turn off every night, if I have a bad day then I can expect the inverter to turn off at some point during the night. But if I have a medium to good day, then I'll definitely go throughout the night into the next morning. Basically any time I know I had a bad night, I have to go into the computer to change the settings for the low-voltage cut off. I've even tried to make changes to the settings on the Control Panel itself.

I am looking at running more than one charge controller because I need to feed divergent voltages. I need a six volt system and a twelve volt system and a 24 or 48 main system. Because of my security and other systems. Have found I can feed a load of tv and computer gear from a regulated 12 volt system

What your battery input volts for the inviter is 96 volts? That must be some kind of special inverter. Most are 12 volt 24 volt and 48 volt battery input. I do not know of a solar charge controller that off the shelf works with more than a 48 nominal battery volts. Victron charge controllers have data link so 2 controllers can work together... Not that it is really needed as 2 controllers work fine together with no datalink or anything like that. I have been running 2 controllers connected to the same battery bank for 3 years.
