Using a baking soda and water mix to darken your wood engraving. Helps achieve a darker, more detailed result with less power. Prep.. on birch, lightly sand, spray solution, let dry and boom... engrave.

I've been hearing about this lately and finally gave it a try. In a side by side same setting comparison to the method I use it wasnt even close on a 5.5w diode. Was really hoping it was going to work better as its very easy to make and my method stains the wood a bit darker and takes a little while to make. Would love to see what my method does on a CO2 laser powered machine. You'd have to dilute it down to 5% I'd guess to start but check it out sometime.

very nice! I'll try that trick with the baking soda, and I also have an american photonics 1.5" lens coming to replace my 2" lens. I was curious what resolution (DPI) you run your images at? Thanks!

Subscribed! Any tips on making the photo darker after its engraved? For example, a photo with little contrast that engraved lighter than you would like? Thanks in advance!

How much air pressure do you use for these? I am about to try and didn’t know if I had my air dialed up too high if it would lessen the burn effect

I'm just getting into lasers. But for the last year I've been doing fractal wood burning in which I use a solution of 1 tbs baking soda to 1 cup of water. The baking soda / water solution stains the wood. Then I use osilic acid to remove the stain from the wood. I'm thinking that is why your engraving is coming out darker.
@beneb93183 жыл бұрын
Any idea why it does that? I assume the baking soda somehow increases the sensitivity to the beam or something like that

When I did this on my plywood it became brittle. Should I sand after the application and before the laser?

When I am using baking soda or borax it's really smearing a lot when I am trying to clean it afterwards. How do you go about that? Even with very low concentration of baking soda/borax it smears a lot after the engraving. I am thinking of using clear coat. Did you have any issues with soot/ash? Thanks for all of your videos!

I tried this method some time back .problem is when you rub the lasered image with fingers you get black smudge all over the wood .that extra black you see by this method is the baking soda sooth left after laser burning .and it is easily washed with water leaving poor image .

Very useful info; will experiment with the technique. Looks like you are always lasing in either the x oy y axis. I've found that running at a 45° angle makes a very significant improvement in output quality. The downside: prints take twice as long. But my 50W OMT CO2 laser with Lightburn seems to better respect variable laser power settings when engraving images using a different scan angle from the default. FWIW, I just run all of my hi-res images through Photoshop for sizing and DPI settings without doing any further edits. I've let Lightburn handle the rest and have been pleased. However, I just watched your video on prep for engraving and will experiment with your approach to compare. Thanks for sharing your experience!

Gone try that solution. Have run with ammonium chloride for my diode laser, that's is about the same results. Ammonium chloride reacts with heat and i can run faster and with lower effect.

That's an amazing differents. And what about the editing of a portret photo? More contrast, less? Black More to gray and white less white? Sharpen the image more?

Well I bought an Ortur laser master 2 20w fixed focus, got 1 practice burn then it goes nuts on next burn! Also bought the rotary, also bought a well made 10’ x 16’ building to do this in. $3500 investment! Now brand new laser didn’t even get a second burn! So mad! Had taken a 1 1/2 weeks working thru support to them to come the conclusion it’s the mother board. Now have to wait weeks to get another board! Not getting any return on investment on my planed extra retirement income.

part of what your are doing is called "raising the grain" when you finish wood with water based finishes, raising the grain is a needed step. when the wood absorbs some water the wood fibers will absorb and expand. when it dries they stay there making it easier to sand to a better finish. why it impacts the laser engraving i dont know, but that is what is happening.
@HouseOfLasers3 жыл бұрын
It’s a reaction with the baking soda and the heat of the laser. You won’t get the same results with just water

You get a much darker engraving using a 10% solution of BORAX instead of Baking Soda. Same process but the Borax works better, hands down.

how does the sanding help the image?

It let's the wood be a smoother surface to engrave. Without sanding, you have fine hairs poke up

@@Jimmyshinn07 you stand before or after you do the laser image or should you sand before and after?
