Hey thanks for the video I started modeling on Archicad and exported it to sketchup to continue modeling the interior objects. My question is can i import the sketchup interior objects into the archicad project with the exact position? (like kind of "paste in place" command in sketchup) Thank you!

Hi Emily, opening source view is typically related to drawings placed on layouts. From a layout, you can either open source view (which jumps you to the view map), or open the source with the layout as a reference. Not sure if this helps clarify or not, but you can always open any view, and then trace reference any other view or layout.

Totally awesome livestream Just had this discussion with my boss after doing a 2 hour presentation on maximising workflow, with their Sketchup and AutoCad setup. They have avoided BIM, saying the size of projects they like to bid for doesn't justify a BIM setup - but, I can see their had being forced to get BIM, based on a few projects in the future. He started talking about Revit, I said Archicad would be a better fit, as you can import existing Sketchup models into Archicad and use them to complete the job in Archicad. Q: Can Archicad interact with a BIM model, which other companies have access to, if those companies are using a Revit based platform?

Thanks for the comment! Yes Archicad can do it all. If they are Autocad and Sketchup based, both of those formats can feed right into the Archicad model. If others are working in Revit, save off a RVT file from Archicad, and send DWGs of the floorplans with annotations. Lots of options for sharing models and drawings between Revit and Archicad.

Hello Ray, I can understand your condition. My personal experience, it really took a long time to make a transition from conventional workflow to BIM workflow. An established firm usually tend to stick with their own methods. It's really a challenge to do a transition, because It might slow down their performance a lot just to learn something new. I suggest you create a ready-to-use system/workflow like John did, but adapt it to your local standards. Then show it to your boss. That might be more convincing for him. Hopefully, you can be the BIM manager too haha

@@nielsonhuang6251 Thanks for your response - I have been working on such a system for the past few months now. It was the first "official" introduction of it yesterday and, as you said about pre-established systems, I knew that there would be a few sharp intakes of breathe at a few key points! (Saved them until last, so I could wave all the good stuff at them in order to get them on my side 😉). I have come from a BIM work place and experienced both Revit and Archicad environments. Before that I have used AutoCad for longer than I will admit. I am confident I can turn this ship around to BIM and I know Archicad is the best platform for eventually moving to from their current setup. Archicad allows the user to manipulate the objects very similar to Sketchup, so it allows the user to apply an established set of skills, for a quicker transition, while being able to work with existing Sketchup models. I may take a lot of flack on it, but I know developing a system, that is ultimately a stepping stone into full on BIM is the best way to aid the transition (baby steps), A BIM environment is not as forgiving than a AutoCad one!

nice skills, thank you for sharing. Here is a question: what you will do if the model of SketchUp is Changed. And not you make these changes on a SketchUp model, how can you automatically find these parts of the project? Maybe Model Compare Tool?

Great question! This is something I run into all the time. Usually what I'll do is put one version of the SKP onto a designated archived renovation filter (by pinning), and then bring in the new. That way you can override with through renovation overrides, and display the other, getting a comparison type view. Since it is just a single object, we can't located individually changed walls/slabs/etc..., but having a side by side comparison is nice. You can also backup the linework produced from the 3d document views, and trace and reference those for comparison as well.

Very awesome stream. I can't believe I actually watched the livestream from 2AM to 3AM. Do you think this workflow can be used to import interior designs from Sketchup to Archicad? My only concern is, it might affect my PC performance a lot.

The Sketchup model I showed was 100mbs, and once converted to the worksheet views I demonstrated we had no problems at all. Viewing in 3D is no problem either. I think you'll be fine with interior designs, but when furniture objects can be simplified or left out that will save on performance.

Hi Daniel. How big of a file? I've imported 200-300mb skp's and haven't had too much issue, except it can take a while to convert. I would try purging unused content from your sketchup model, and also delete high polygon objects that don't add much value. This will help reduce the size and conversion time, and also help with performance once placed. Upon import, make sure to click to finalize the import process, I believe you have to click to make the placement of the object. Also make sure that you don't have any cutplanes, or filtered stories in your 3d view. View extents and check your embedded library to see if you can find the converted object. Good luck!

Can I import Information from Sketchup LayOut into Archicad?

When I merge the object it loads and then the object is invisible (all layers are on and visible as well as renovation filters.) Just cant see the object in 2d or 3d after placing the skp file as a 2019 format in archicad 26.) Any ideas of why this is happening? It works just fine in archicad 25.

That is strange it works in AC25 but not AC26. I would double check the default status of your object, and also the renovation filter. Sometimes when importing SKP files, they are much lower or higher than your project 0, so you may make sure all your story visibility is set to infinite. Can you select the object after placing at all to get the bounding box nodes?

You would have to convert to a morph to ungroup. Not recommended with a file this size, only smaller objects.

Yes doing it the old school method requires even more discipline and advanced skills than using BIM. Throughout the ages it's amazing what historical buildings have been created, all without the use of BIM.
