I like the way you explain things, I wrap my Turks head a little different as I use the shaft itself instead of my fingers, just works better for me but again I like the way you explain things..

@woodandwheelz8 жыл бұрын
First, I thank you for taking the time to share this with us. I was wondering if instead of brads you could use staples. It would hold multiple strands in one punch. Also, Instead of cutting 4 separate yellow strands you would only need one long one and the same for the blue. You would only need to get the staple started over the yellow strands then tack the staple the rest of the way down when you tighten it up. The staple would still be hidden by the turks head. I hope that makes sense because it works out great in my head. :) Again, great video and great explanation. I plan on doing this on a walking stick, so not as long as yours (13 inches) but I like your design. God bless and Go Navy. STG3(SW) Patton USS Preble DDG-46

Nice! Where do you get your paddles/oars?
@blkcc14 ай бұрын
Hey brother, thanks for the compliment. I haven't done a paddle in years since I'm longer in the service. When I did buy them I just looked on the internet for the best price. I think by getting a couple at one time, I lowered my average cost per unit for shipping. I think I also got a better price because I bought more than one at a time. Wish I had a better (more economical) answer for you.

Those are tacks not brads. Tacks are like big headed nails. Brads are split pins.

Astounding line work. Brings me back to the good ol days of being a BM. Do you know how people like Boston Paddle company put logos onto the wood or ranks. Do they burn it on or is there a certain way to do this.

What great timing! I just got home today from deployment and thank you for your comment. I can't remember where I got the paddles from exactly however, I did just google wooden paddle for sale and saw this www.walmart.com/ip/Attwood-2-1-2-Wooden-Canoe-Paddle/16351005?action=product_interest&action_type=title&item_id=16351005&placement_id=irs-106-t1&strategy=PWVAV&visitor_id&category=&client_guid=e5ac5944-6235-4cd7-8ceb-7cdee4fcce79&customer_id_enc&config_id=106&parent_item_id=16203653&parent_anchor_item_id=16203653&guid=c4653639-c768-4cc5-a259-b8b4b0fd5ab9&bucket_id=irsbucketdefault&beacon_version=1.0.1&findingMethod=p13n They were about $8.15 + shipping. When I originally bought the paddles I got them from a boat supply store. I hope this helps.

Any ideas for where to get paddles? I’m in charge of our farewell gifts now but no one has done it in a year…. So I have no idea where to start.
@blkcc12 жыл бұрын
Not sure where your located however I would recommend either a boat store or sporting goods store that has some boating items. If neither one of those options works for you online would be pretty much your only option left. I did a quick amazon search and saw an Attwoood brand 2.5" long paddle for $21. IF you have prime or some you know has prime then shipping is free. If you get 2 or more then shipping is free for everyone. You can also try a military surplus store for paracord, maybe they would have a paddle too. Depending on color of cord wanted, Home Depot has some. Hope this helps.

do you ever take orders for a custom paddle?
@blkcc17 жыл бұрын
Thank you for asking however, I'm sorry at this time I'm not taking orders. I did think about doing this for retirement but I haven't retired yet and I started doing leather goods like holsters, wallets and travel bags. I got into this originally because I got tired of our mess having to pay so much for retirement paddles. You made me feel real good, thinking my work was good enough to sell.

Where do you buy your thread? And what kind is it?
@blkcc18 жыл бұрын
Sorry to take so long to reply, work has kept me from accessing youtube and when I did I didn't realize you had asked a question. I ordered it from an online dealer however, if you want a smaller amount, check locally in an Army-Navy surplus type store, Walmart, or even Home depot. I have bought it in all three placed just mentioned. Great question.

Paddle looks great. But the video would be a lot better if you had done the video close up so we can better follow what you're doing and also if you can redo what you did with the gold parachord rather than explain it. Thanks

How would this hold up to regular handling?
@blkcc15 жыл бұрын
If I were to make this for a "usable" handle cover. I would probably sand the finish on the wood handle (area to be covered only) just to make the surface not glossy. I would put titebond III waterproof glue on the handle area and then secure or fasten one end of the paracord and then make the spiral wrap. The decorative cross cords do move so for handling they might become an irritating hand sore. I also use acrylic glues and something like "plumeria" or "E6000" from Home Depot would work even better for holding the cords in place. A little periodic dab of the acrylic glue under the decorative cross cords would keep them in place however once again you have the comfort issue under your hand. I usually find irregular shapes under a grip cause sore spots, your milage might vary. This is based off of me thinking regular handling is using this paddle for rowing. I have no practical application of this in action yet I would believe it would work. Hope this helps.
@Peasbewitchu5 жыл бұрын
blkcc1 Thank you! Not for rowing - we do rifle-style drill with them in our cadet program. I will try the addition of the glue! I love the simplicity of the design! Thanks for posting the video!

I'm trying to buy the "fidz", I have a traditional Marlin spike but it's too long and awkward for paddle wrapping. what's the name or brand or store name of the weaving tool you use?
@blkcc18 жыл бұрын
Sorry to take so long to reply, work has kept me from accessing youtube. I made my fids out of a broken 3 piece .22 caliber gun clean rod. I cut to length and then ground the pointy end to a dull point on a belt sander, finished it up by hand with finer sand paper. The threaded female end is where the sections would screw together. I believe if you search Ebay in the paracord section you can find some for about $5.00. I hope this helps. Thank you for watching.

You know, you have some really interesting design features and techniques to share with folks, but you seriously need to work on your video capabilities. If you ran out of battery, I would have thought you'd do it all over again with freshly charged batteries. Just food for thought.

Thank you for the comment. I completed the paddle on the day before it was given to the recipient. I didn't have another paddle and decided to publish the video anyway thinking I could describe it sufficiently. I do agree with you and wish the complete build was videoed. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment.
@blkcc16 жыл бұрын
Maximus Meridius I will drill a hole if the coin is round. The best way in my opinion is to use a forstner bit the same diameter. The depth should be the same as the thickness of the coin. The only concern is if the bit would push through the backside of the paddle. The middle of the bit has a point that sticks out farther than the rest of the bit. The reason to use a forstner bit is so the majority of the hole is nice and flat. I use an acrylic glue to stick it in place but almost anything works.

Bro your camera is too far from what you are doing, also you should protect the paddle from damage when you're hammering.

no clue wtf a brad or prad or what the nail thing is supposed to be.
@blkcc17 жыл бұрын
I used a small brad, it's like a small nail with a head that when hammered in will hold/pinch the paracord against the paddle. You could also use staples if you want. I like to use a fastener to hold the paracord instead of knots because it is more secure and you can get the design tighter. Hopefully that helps.

Could you have recorded with more echo... WOW! think next time... I'm passing this video up...
@blkcc17 жыл бұрын
BHD, I do agree there is some echo for the first 10 minutes due to all the tile floors in my house however, I have since purchased a shotgun mic to place on my camera. I also was upset with myself for the camera user malfunction and loss of some video footage. I like to watch commenters' videos before I reply to see what they are doing and what I can learn from them. You have some really good paracord skills and ideas. I would probably leave the construction of jigs to someone else, the "union stamp" and cracked wood is due to lack of woodworking knowledge (if you cut off the diamond point of the nails you are using it will punch a hole through the wood as opposed to pushing the wood fibers to the side and causing the wood to split and crack when nailed close to the edge). Hitting the nail on the head is just a skill you will learn after practice.
