I came here to learn to write a business plan. This was NOT about writing a business plan. Please change the misleading title. The student at 39:18 gets it all right, and the speakers were kind of condescending. If you want to learn to write a business plan, go to the Wharton School video under the Entrepreneurship series.

If you want to hire a professional business plan writer, hit up Nicholas Coriano at NicholasCoriano.com, has written over 200 business plans and is a graduate of business school AND law school. Also a successful entrepreneur.

That video was the first one I watched and found it was amazing. It wanted me to check out other videos on the same topic so I can get different angles and it seems like Wharton's pretty much did the trick

This is also really useful for anyone wondering why they should write a business plan even if they're not looking for funding. It's processing by verbalising. Get it out of your head and onto paper; life and business become much clearer.

Business plans are essential for new business start ups and this presentation contains some very useful advice for those preparing a business plan. Thank you.

It's best to test your product on customers first, then write a business plan for the information you receive. I've found it hard, as most people are not interested in your product. I found the best way for a person to invest in your product is having a great sales pitch, and expertise in the product you are selling, with a PASSION in your product. A business plan without interaction with customers is a waste of time. But you should always do your research before you think of quitting your day job, and prepare for the day when you can stand up to your boss and quit. Remember, your first business isn't likely to take off, it's often the case as your in your infancy element of excitement. You will of cause have to adapt and learn new skills along the way. And those new skills, will lead you into another business venture. One that you didn't prepare for from your initial business plan.

Thanks Rebecca for answering my question about "new ideas" when it was asked by student during Q & A. I agree that most ideas are not "new" or all that new, and that it's possible to put one's own spin on an old idea in order to enhance what exists. -Jacqueline in MI

Some ideas are brand new, so what's wrong with not having competition/competitors? Very helpful presentation. For example, once upon a time the Post-it-Note began w/3M corp. and no one did it earlier.

You should define your competition more broadly in this case. People could use traditional-style notes, along with tape, for instance. Everyone has a competitor - for TV it may be radio, for the internet it may be books. Actually if you can define your competition, you can also immediately derive your advantage over it, estimate market size, and so much more.

Helpful, but as one of the questions suggested in the Q&A, this video is primarily for those who want VC funding, not for brick and mortar or lifestyle businesses etc.

What do you think of crowd funding as a source of start up capital when banks will not fund a project? I am trying to start a private security company.

She is saying make a business plan but actually prepare just to do the slides because the amount of time that it typically takes to go through a 40 page business plan. This way gives a quick synopsis to the VC.

Crowd funding can be a fantastic source for getting the financial resources you need to set up or to finance a new project etc. HOWEVER let the bank's refusal be red flag. Really go back to your business plan and ask why not. Play the role of bank manager and ask exactly how well thought through is this plan? Do the numbers add up? Are they realistic? What is this person's track record with money? They aren't all idiots. If they have a fair reason for doubt, rewrite your plan. Best of luck.
