I wrote my first comment when I was in the process of writing my paper. I just wanted to say I ended up getting a 93 on an argumentative research paper which was 20% of my grade... It was on Guy De Maupassant's "The Necklace". This video helped me focus on character analysis and not just being judgmental of the character. Thanks again!

Good question! Not necessarily. You can examine the social or societal influences on a character. You can look at the role a character plays in his/her family. You could explore cultural aspects. But then we still come back to asserting how that makes them who they are. Does that make sense?

Good question! When I grade a Character Analysis, I want to see an assertion of how the character grows. Marlin's realizations chart that growth. For example, he realizes that he has the capacity to trust others. At first, he can hardly leave his son with the Kindergarten teacher. By the end, he lets go a little and trusts both Dory and Nemo. An essay without realizations runs the risk of listing facts: he is this; he is that. Interpretive essays try to go further. Does that make sense?

If I have understood this correctly: the way a character develope throughout the story and with what motive that drives him is the character analysis?

Miss Emily -- yes, a challenging character! Have you seen my video on that story? It's a long video, but it walks you through the story, including examining Miss Emily's actions and the town's reaction. More tips: Think about what she must be clinging to -- her reputation? her family's standing in the community? Why did she keep this man in her room? Is she controlling or just desperate to have what she feels she deserves? I'm interested in your thoughts!

Thanks this helped a lot! I'm writing a character analysis on Yossarian from Catch-22 as an AP Lang assignment. I was wondering if you think this was a good thesis: "Yossarian's fear about his own death and isolation results in an unexpected twist that Heller incorporates; the death of Yossarian's friends."

Hi, Ms. Rebecca! I have a question... Well, to give some background, I am taking an online course and am unsure how to outline my analysis which is an assignment due next Sunday. :/ For an outline, would I write complete sentences/whole paragraphs or am I confusing an outline with a rough draft...? I remember in my speech class we did outlines with barely complete sentences... but that was for speech class.
@SixMinuteScholar11 жыл бұрын
I can see why that would be confusing. I would bet that "open to interpretation" means that the thesis shouldn't be a fact (which wouldn't be open to interpretation). Does that help?

I have a character analysis essay assignment (a character from a drama/play), but I'm feeling really stuck in coming up with a thesis because my instructor has been very specific in saying that the thesis must be "open to interpretation". Are they all supposed to be this way and it's a sometimes unspoken rule? This stipulation has been a major roadblock for me.
@riyatolovely726911 жыл бұрын
do you have any idea for a character in disney movie.... my teacher referred me to you, but she said i cant use the one you did in your video, can you help please??
@SixMinuteScholar11 жыл бұрын
Let's see . . . I talked about Nemo in this video, but you could analyze the main character from Frozen, Mr. Incredible, Simba from Lion King, or almost any main character. They all change internally as well as externally. Hope this helps!

I guess my problem is that since my thesis can't be based on facts, I can't help but feel that whatever I will write about will come off as really reaching, as though it were pulled out of thin air, and therefore wrong, if that makes sense.

It's hard. Think of an inference/assertion/claim as answering a "Why" question. Why does this character make this decision? Why does s/he say this important sentence? That might help. Hope so!

Yes, I see what you mean. You don't want to just make something up! Think of your thesis as a reasonable conclusion drawn from the facts. Example: Clayton chooses to stay home from a party to take care of his sick little brother. A reasonable conclusion is that he shares a close bond to his brother. With more facts, though, we might infer that he doesn't share a close bond, but just wants to appear to. His real motive is to impress his girlfriend, maybe. Any better?
