How to write a cosmetic product label | UK Cosmetic Regulations

I've been getting a lot of 'is this ok for my label' emails today. So many that I thought that best way to help would be to address it with a quick video.

Hi, I wondered if there is a difference between PAO and BB date? Can you place any of these on? My CPSR states PAO of 12 months but trading standards said the product must have a BB date? I also wondered if you had any info ok adding barcodes for items to be sold in retail shops? Thanks!

I’d go with whichever your safety assessor says on your CPSR. It will also depend on the product. If it includes fresh ingredients - like a lot of ‘well know chain bath Bomb store’ products do then a best before is necessary. If in doubt just add both. Barcodes you can purchase online. I forget the store name, I’ll try and find it.

If you can fit it on the product then yes. If you can’t, then include your RP information if you can, but the book symbol and website address then clearly listing all information there is an option. Otherwise you can put smaller products in a box and label that.

Hi, No you don't need a barcode unless it's a requirement for where you are selling. For example, if selling products on Amazon, they require you to have a barcode. Some shops may also request this, but it's not necessary otherwise.

How does one become a RP? Is an RP in the EU the same in the UK?

You are automatically the RP if you make your own products unless you appoint someone else to act as RP on your behalf (some companies and testing labs offer this as a service). No, since the UK left the EU, you would need an RP in both the EU and UK if you wish to sell your products in both countries.

Can we use any graphics we want, or are there any particular regulations that tell you what not to use in the UK?

Depends on what graphics you are referring to. In terms of statements like 'vegan, ' you could write suitable for vegans, but you'd need a licence from the correct organisation to use the leaping bunny or the PETA logo. You can use what you want in terms of imagery for your label design. If you let me know what precisely you mean, then I can help further :)

@@revegacosmetics I want to start a soap business in the UK, I am working with a friend artist to make the logo, my worry is, how do I make the type of label work with all the regulations in the UK, for all the information you have to make sure are on the label, so my question is, if I use a logo that take the all front on the product, leaving me only the back of the product free for all the information, would that be in regulation with the UK standard? X

@@stefaniamorelli9919 you need to include what your product is and the weight on the front, everything else can go on the back. The customer needs to immediately identify what the product is and how much they are getting you see. So these things must be on the front, even if it’s obvious what the product is.

How to actually put the address of my company if I start from home?

You need to put your home address I’m afraid. You can abbreviate to house number and post code I believe, so long as you have the full address on your website. If you prefer not to have your home address you can pay another company to act as responsible person for you and use that company address instead.
