Just subscribed. I’ve always wanted to write my own song and have tried countless times and I’ve always ended up with some rhyming mess lol. Hello Umar! Did you try using my method in this video for the lyrics by coming up with comparisons, memories, and well wishes? And as for the chord progression, did you try starting off by using the one I provided you with in this video? Keep in mind, you can always write a "practice song" just to get a feel for the formula. And once you feel more comfortable, you can start branching off into trying other various chord progressions. Don't give up!

LOL... hey no worries, I've totally been there before. When I first started my songwriting degree at Berklee, I had the exact same mindset: every song I write here must be a hit song! I quickly realized that I was completely defeating the point of my education - I was there to learn, not be a star :) So now I always tell people, give yourself at LEAST a few years of focusing entirely on practicing, growing, learning, and obtaining every tool you can get your hands on. Then eventually, you'll start to notice that most songs you write will sound like they have the potential to be hit songs, simply because the tools and knowledge you gained will start to be incorporated to your songs with less and less effort, and it will almost be second nature.

That's completely fine! I would just suggest that when you choose your title, you try to go with something that was repeated a lot throughout the song. It will be more memorable that way! :-)

It's been 4 years now. Did you write your song? Did you sing it on KZbin, Rumble, DTube, TikTok etc? Spotify is a waste for new musicians. They don't pay enough and if you are unknown you will stay that way. They do not promote artists. Actually, they don't pay much for established artists either.

Your step 3 (melody writing) is my step 1 for some reason.. because i know inspiration hits me when a topic strikes me then i impromptu make up a short line or a whole chorus part that ALREADY has a melody.. then i make a verse and others circling around the chorus whilst having the same melody. its so hard for me to write stuff BEFORE i have a melody in mind.. my lines become sooo corny and not catchy at all when i think of a melody last.. anyway great vid!

If you want to write an interesting song on guitar, I highly suggest you write it in an alternate tuning. Lots of experimentation and interesting chords. I wrote a song for my girlfriend and I tuned my guitar to open G and put a capo on the 2nd fret making it open A and I don't regret doing it in an alternate tuning because it's way more interesting than standard tuning in my opinion. If you're stuck in a rut, try open tunings 😉
