I believe power systems should be creative and simple. For instance, I love One Piece powers because it’s really easy to follow, even with its set of rules. Devil fruits gives the user said ability while spicing things up with learning the other potential power known as Haki.

While maybe not as important, Ido think how much a system works narratively and thematically is pretty important too. Probably kind of a no brainer, but still. In MHA, quirks aren't just there for the sake of cool fights. The entire world is built around the very idea of people being born with super powers. Every single character is shaped by their power of lack thereof and the overall society formed around these superpowers. Then you have FMA and Avatar TLA where basically every single facet of the story ties back to the power system. Also, if anyone wants to see what an absolutely abysmal power system looks like, just check out rwby.

I was just about to comment something similar, but yeah this is a very important aspect. How well the power system fits into the themes and what it represents is my key factor in determining a good system. Like in both FMA Undead Unluck, where basically all of story, world building, characters, and themes are built from and around the Alchemy and Negator systems respectively. And especially in Undead Unluck, where the way the characters use these powers that were thrust onto them and deeply traumatized them to help other negators master their powers represents using your own experience with pain and devastation to reach out and help others experiencing similar pain. It’s really fucking good

This reminds me of a power system from A certain Magic Index's, which is actually my favorite power system. It completely revolves around narrative, world-building and verse. The plot follows the conflict between science vs religion. Within a highly technological city, there is the Esper power created in the laboratory, each Esper has a power linked to science and there is an entire level system (0 to 5) that classifies them. Level 0 being the weakest as it was unable to awaken its powers (just like Mha where people can be born without powers) and level 5 being the strongest as it has countless ways to use its power. The issue is that most Espers in the city are level 0 for narrative reasons. The city is self-sabotaging the program that turns children into Espers and preventing them from awakening their powers because... Outside of this city, there is magic that consists of relying on real historical and mythological figures to create spells. Therefore, the entire verse is based on our world, which provides various types of religious tales and myths. 99% of magical side characters consist of an existing or mythological figure with all of their lore introduced and explored. Among them, the greatest example is Aleister Crowley, the British occultist and creator of the Thelema belief. I would say that Thelema is the most important thing in the series, it is not just one of the magical systems, its concepts and principles "do what you want for everything is the law" shaped the entire series, from the narrative structure, to the evolution of both sides to character development and the writing of the protagonist. I love how the author creates 2 power systems, Esper and Magic, which should be completely different but are actually sides of the same coin because the Esper power, although completely based on science, quantum mechanics, Schrödinger's Cat, etc... it it also contrasts with the principles of Thelema. And hell, I love the Avengers style of combo attacks that RWBY uses in his fights but really, his power system sucks.

I think it essentially comes down to how plausible a character's strength will be in a fight. When you get introduced to a concept you expect the same rules apply to everyone. Great video but my only issue with it and other power/magic system videos like this is that the title, and the content in the video, seem to suggest that there's only one way a power system can be "perfect" when, just like magic system, power system's have two types: Soft and Hard. And depending on the type of shonen being written, either have their own version of "perfect" "Hard" meaning the system has a very strict set of rules and limitations all of which should generally be completely understood by the reader and can't really be broken as the series develops. Usually, more and more rules are introduced as the series goes so the grading in how good those systems are usually based on how constantly written they are. These have their strengths; Fights and Matchups will always be more interesting when the system is hard because every reader will know exaclty what every combatant has to offer with their skills making conflicts believable and filled with hype. The problem with this vid you've only really tackled Hard Power Systems in this video, which are all very great systems in thier own right, but to set these precedented standards as the criteria for a "perfect" power system, when on the other side of the spectrum lies "Soft" power systems, kinda disrespects the things other power system's achieves that these lack. Where Hard systems strengths lies in fights particuarly, it feels like that's all it really strengeths: The fights. "Soft" systems usually do better at showcasing the Characters, Story, Themes and Worldbuilding. "Soft" meaning the powers don't need to have lines of explanation, explicit rules and consistant writing. Generally some aspects of the power's are left open to many implications. However, because the system doesn't need to rely of overwhelming the info to be apprecaited. Time is spent more on how these powers effect characters emotionally, how they play into the themes of the overarching story, how they effect the general world they belonging on a day to day basis. Two great examples are My Hero Academia(Quirks) and Chainsaw Man(Devils). Both series' systems heavily infleunce society and how the world play's into the story. With Quirks, they aren just super powers people are born with, thier a phenomenon when, in its inception, caused civil unrest around the world, breeded new forms of segregation, caused specific people to be casted from society but also did things like inspire the innocent and literally play into indiviuals entire identities. Both the Worldbuilding and Story are directly impacted by the very nature of MHA's power system and has constently so from chapter 1 to this current finale. I'm not in anyway saying Quirks are better written than Curses, but i've found myself enjoying Quirks more recently becaise of its connection to the bigger picture of the story being Devils from Chainsaw Man is similar to Cursed energy, but alot more simpler in the fact that a Devil's strenght is accurtely compareable to how much humans fear its name. Unlike JJK however, everyone knows that devils exists, and they have been since their inception, Thus, they've relatively had an effect of how society is, in turn how characters act and come to conflict and in turn, the narrative and world building. Now that begs the question? Which is better? Hard or Soft? Which is more "perfect". Well that kinda thing is usually up to the reader's prefrences and what thier trying to get out the story their experiencing. One thing that's inarguable is that both have strenghts which the other lacks, I'm hoping you can talk about some of these topics in the next video Once again, great video, sorry for the essay

This is like the best comment and my main issue with this video as a whole. Nen and stands and quirks and alchemy and cursed energy are amazing power systems because they fit the overall themes and motifs and aesthetics of their series. If you swapped any one for the other (quirks in FMA, stands in JJK, etc.) then these series would completely fall flat or be completely different because they're all structurally and fundamentally different. You can't just say CE would be better if it were more like Nen or Stands. That's not really how writing works.

I like the way you ordered these rules. When you were going through the first few rules I was thinking to myself "this feels like the minimum for a decent power system" but the later ones as you said are what separate the good from the great. I know you have a part 2 in mind according to the video and whatever that might be I hope to also see you try applying this criteria to other series that weren't included in the video. Fire Force & World Trigger have some great ones that I'd like to see analyzed under this lens as they are among the best outside of the ones you mentioned in the video. There was another comment that mentioned they liked Demon Slayer & CSM and while those power systems are not as interesting to me, I guess they can be included too. Of course all these are well fleshed out series. If you wanted to toss in maybe some lesser known series I would suggest Skeleton Double or Gachiakuta which have promising but less developed at the time power systems. Maybe this could be the community question where you ask what series power systems people want to see evaluated.

if you like technical power systems watch hxh, nen is easily the most in-depth power system ive ever seen and the amount of stuff you can do with it is genuinely insane, its VERY applicable. like one thing i love abt nen is you could basically take anyones power from any piece of media ever and adapt it into a nen ability in some way or another. a simple one is todo from jjk, teleportation is under high-level emission so you could have him be an emitter and make an ability where the activation condition is clapping, and the self-imposed limitation is it can only swap positions (him or others) rather than any kind of teleportation, and it only works on something that has aura

What I think makes a good power system is an explained set of rules (such as restrictions/requirements) to how things work in a way which there are little to no moments where you'd ask " how'd they do that?", and where the users can be creative with how they can use their powers (for example someones only power to shoot fire, and that's all the can do with no creativity twist to it). Some good examples of series that I think really show this off are Skeleton Double, World Trigger, and The Law of Ueki. If those series/HxH, JoJo, and UU are S-A tier, then I think I'd put JJK in B to B+ tier just cause I feel like tho they do have rules and structures to their abilities, I feel like alot of their abilities are either very restricted in what they can do (Todo, Nobara, nanami), they have moments of skyrocket in energy/strength that you wouldn't usually see in more structured power systems, and things happening that feel like they go against what was previously stated. It doesn't help that it feels like it tries to make things seem more complicated then it actually is with how they explain/word certain things.

@remus4283 2 ай бұрын
The best power systems have TWO components, the highly personal/specialized abilities that are based off of a common system, and the more generic applications. For One Piece it is Devil Fruits and Haki. For HxH it's Hatsu vs Ren/Ten/Zetsu etc. And with JJK it's Innate Techniques vs Barriers/RCT/Domains. I believe the perfect power system would have a well explained and balanced Personalized side like Nen's Hatsu, and a more flashy and versatile Generic side like JJK's . Nen's generic side is visually boring to see used and often just boils down to how much aura you move around your body and where. Meanwhile JJK's innate techniques are cool... but they are also really random and unbalanced with no real structure. No matter how hard you work, you probably can't contend with Gojo because his ability is super hax with absolutely no drawbacks. TL;DR: Personalized system should be balanced and structures, while generic counterpart should be tactical and flashy.

I think it os important to say - JJK's power systems do actually have a lot of potential due to: 1) Binding vows 2) One's own understanding of the world We can see how Gojo can use a binding vow to change the rules of his domain, how Nanami saves extra cursed energy for when it's needed, MeiMei sacrificing the crows and everything else - all of it is out there for each character to grasp and manipulate for their own gain. As long as there is a need, any ability can be changed/enhanced due to a binding vow. We also see how Sukuna can utilise Mahoraga's adaptation just because he has the skill to do so, as well as we see Yuji being able to damage souls just because he understands how to. Deeper understanding of the world allows characters in JJK to evolve their powers, and that is a great thing for any power system. (I personally assume that Jogo's maximum meteor would also come from just understanding more about his technique, considering meteors are not usually something one would associate with volcanoes, earth or fire, but is a very reasonable addition to his arsenal)

My favorite part of JJK's power system is that its actually built on *the illusion of rules* rather than actually having strict rules for everything Now what i mean about that is how in the Shibuya Arc Kenjaku and Mahito talking about how their techniques completely clash and contradict each other so Mahito puts out the idea they work on entirely different systems *then Kenjaku, the oldest and most experienced sorceror in JJK, agrees that cursed techniques are basically personal micro power systems under a general umbrella instead of being bound to one set of rules* We also have it literally said and or showcased multiple times that Jujutsu higherups keep a very strict handle on what is and isn't proper in their traditionalist mindset which is literally stated when it says the heigherups don't like Kugisaki because her technique is outside of what they consider proper of their system So its not a lack of creativity on the writing part its *a literal in universe stifling of creativity from the top down by a traditionalist government* And we see this even more because the top tiers are the ones that actually think enough to go outside those norms, hell that is *literally Sukuna's entire fucking thing and why he's the strongest* But we also see that with characters like Mei Mei, Kenjaku, all the special grades, and almost any other top tier sorceror or cursed spirits as well because with cursed spirits they were never beholden to societal restrictions or expectations in the first place 😂 Also my guy did you really say Todo and Jogo can't do much? I disagree with the notion that the aplication of the powersystem isnt varied. Like with the hunter hubter example, CE on it's own can be used in varied ways as well. Using the same todo example, in just two fights he used CE reinforcement, simple domain, black flash, and utilized his CT in a very creative way, like imbuing objects with CE and clapping with his opponents hand. With jogo, he can create traps with mini volcanos, create bugs, create a meteor, use domain amplification, and use a domain (though admittedly we dont know what it does). I think gege does a great job at making each charcter have varied applications of the power system.

I think early on it’s kinda annoying because it lacks basic shared basic techniques we know and then can understand in every fight. Later on he does this and it’s great. Once rct and other techniques start to be used by the cast it’s great.

Gotta disagree with the take that jjk doesn't have any kind of roshambo aspect to its power system. It's not explicitly stated that there are different categories of CT but there are some CT that are clearly incompatible with others. I think it adds to the strength of the power system when it doesn't have to make those distinctions and the roshambo aspect comes through naturally in the fight. I do think a major weakness of JJK is that CT are determined from birth and for the most part there is nothing that can be done to change that.

my one *MAJOR* gripe with not just the power system but worldbuilding of JJK in general, is the ubiquitous use of the term "curse" to such a degree that it becomes confusing, even when you *do* attempt to consider the word in the context it was used at the time. so frustrating, cos its so unnecessary

Jujutsu Kaisen isn't about the Perfect Power system- It's about crashing the walls of 'the power system.' The society of jjk has grown to not care about any kind of power system, ever since the birth of Gojo Satoru. It created a system of fout special grade sorcerers that ran fully unchecked, and a white noise level of rank and file 'rank 1 sorcerers ' that have proved time and time again they are much much more than that. Then enter Yuji Itadori, enter Sukuna to CRASH that power system in its entirety, and now the whole system is flipped around and whosawhatsit lol. One could even say Takaba has been controlling the entire story and power system since the final panel of chapter 239

I really like the overall power system in JJK, but (manga spoilers ahead) … Restless Gambler ruins it for me. It has too many individual rules and relies on too much contingency for it to feel anything other than contrived. It seemed like Gege was writing the rules to justify whatever the desired outcome was. It doesn’t seem clear enough that you can imagine a match up and envision how it goes. It’s not clear.

Fairy Tail power system bugs me. Example. Would Zeref be able to beat those random dragons that came out of the portal? I mean, you would think so because Dragneel thought that Acnologia was afraid of him and Zeref's magic is affective against Erza's mother. But, he doesn't use Dragon Slaying magic... so does that mean normal magic can indeed affect dragons? And, if so, is it just because of a power difference? And what about Demons? Why did Alteer need to use Iced Shell on Deliora when normal magic is enough? I mean, we see it with Erza literally beating the fuck out of Kyoka. And why is Demon Slaying magic affective against dragons?

Cursed energy as a system itself is probably second only to Nen in how expansive and nuanced it is There are so many theories and possible scenarios that can be made using these systems but JJK just doesn't explore these nuances enough that makes it lag behind a lot of other systems like Spiritual Pressure, Chakra, etc...

SPOILER: for example, I love how za warudo which was introduced in part 3 can beat tusk act 4. despite tusk act 4 beating the hell out of d4c love train. im not sure if za warudo could beat d4c love train but he can beat tusk. thats why you cant call anything conventially weak. i just love jojo

Bro really titled his video "perfect power system" showing two of the worst power systems known to anime. I power system not only needs to have rules and applications of the rules, the process from how the innate building block of the system (i.e. cursed energy) transforms into abilities needs to be very clear. Why certain characters have certain powers also needs to be clear. IMO, Late Jojo is the worst by far. it's literally just that the characters have abilities, and then the abilities activate. I don't care that these abilities manifest, or that people can't see them. Jojo also is very inconsistent, often breaking its own rules. this problem gets worse as more seasons get written. Two instances is that stands were originally "Spirit Hamon", a changed version of the old system but still technically hamon that takes shape into something else. Hamon required 2 things, A- the user being alive (was broken in part 5) and the user breathing (was broken in part 3 since they used stands under water.) JJK is a bit better in the sense that it tries to explain that everything is "cursed energy from negative emotions" and it has a few rules, but these rules are often illogical and make no sense to each other. The abilities also don't make sense as to how they can form from cursed energy, and why certain abilities are only available to certain people. There are also additional rules that don't make sense or go unexplained like cursed tools, cursed objects, reincarnation, origins of sorcerers, shikigamis, etc. still very bad power system Early HxH was very good. The abilities were basic enough to understand and also make sense how auras worked. I'd say it was really good up to the chimera ant arc, where we started seeing a lot more Illogical BS, and it only got worse from there. I will provide some more examples of good power systems. Chainsaw man, as much as I hate the anime for subjective reasons, has a perfect power system. It's the better version of JJK's power system. Fear -> devil. The more something is feared, the more powerful the devil is. You can't really kill a devil unless you end people's fears in that devil, and killing a devil just reincarnates that devil. devils aren't human, nor are they horrible monsters. They are their own beings capable of thought and emotion just differently from humans. People acquire their powers by making contracts with these devils, and the devils can occupy people or corpses. I haven't really watched much one piece, but I know it's very consistent in it's devil fruits are weak to water rule. Devil fruits also have types, and despite the fact that their abilities are just abilities without real reason, the abilities themselves are very accessible and easy to understand The perfect power system is Naruto. I don't really need to explain why. No one breaks the rules, techniques are all based on chakra natures and their combinations. Another perfect power system is demon slayer. there are no crazy abilities that break physics unless for demons, it's all just breathing.

Ur problems with jjk come from the fact u didn’t pay attention when reading/ watching it’s said in the first episode cursed energy is very simple like electricity but can be used to power complicated things like a phone or a car or the internet and cursed tools can be crafted by someone or made by someone imbuing the tool with cursed energy/technique over and over again, and a shikigami is made by a curse technique like how I’m using electricity to comment this

And the reincarnations were done by kenjaku who had vast knowledge over the soul and made binding vows with powerful sorcerers across his lifetime and the origin of sorcerers is simple some people are born with a slightly different brain similar to how some people have different colored eyes but tengen put a barrier mostly restricting this to Japan

I feel like your final point is incorrect i would say jujutsu kaisen does it better than Jojos and hunter x hunter putting the abilities into confines makes them less good it confines them to a pattern that would get boring after the same combination comes up thats why jojos doesent even obey there own system later on in the series going for something more mysterious adding better elements just as jujstu kaisen does like when sukuna uses flames or gojo being used as an anomaly character so i believe that jujstu kaisen is top tier powered system
