Welcome to episode 6 in my video game rescore series! Ape Escape is the video game up next and I'm going to walk you through scoring a new song for the game. I'll spend some time focusing in on what makes the sound design in this game special, and use that to inform our decisions in trying to replicate that same vibe in a new song. A little bonus: my first Drum and Bass/Jungle track!

Damn, this is good! As you demonstrated with the 7th Atmos preset, the technique of sampling a chord and playing it as a single sample is derived from the scene Terada emerged out of, late 80s-early 90s house/rave/techno, allowing for these kinds of chromatic compositions you hear in his music. Set the attack and release to near-zero for those ever-iconic choppy chords a-la early The Prodigy :P

I appreciate this comment! - I actually had the realization when reflecting on how this video went that I didn't talk much at all about the sampling process itself and how integral it is for the genre and time period, whoops. Guess little misses like that happen when you're dipping your toes in a new genre for the first time! This is good stuff tho - pinning this comment!

Real cool seeing others having a similar experience with the soundtrack I had. Game OSTs have a way of connecting us all in that way. Thanks for checking it out!

I've been looking to get into a composing a bit, and one thing that keeps crossing my mind is Ape Escape because it is one of my favorite soundtracks for any game. I had no idea how to go about making anything like Ape Escape's soundtrack, but thanks to this video I now do! I definitely will come back and reference this video in the future. Thanks!

the processing on those drums is so nice, i'd love to hear more about those effects also, it would be cool to see a video replicating Satoshi Ise's style on Capcom vs. SNK

Ape Escape was my first exposure to DnB as well! Pizza Hut demo discs were the best thing they’ve ever done! Pizza be damned lmao I actually bought a copy of this OST and I have it on my shelf unopened, I don’t think I ever will! I like your interpretation of Mr Terada’s work! I’ve been studying him for years and I’ve finally nailed down an interpretation of my own. Your info on plugins is very useful ✨✌🏾✨ Please keep doing what you’re doing!

This is great, the arrangement and writing is on point, the plugins for the saturation and degradation simulation just elevates it even more. Huge fan of the elektron stuff, its really humbling to go from DAW to DAWless. Well done!

Excelent Content!! as a Jungle/Drum n Bass producer, it's pretty interesting how people who doesn't do that much music of the genre try to dip in, and always the results are amazing!

Oh brother, having just subscribed after recently finding the Hyperlight video this is a dream come true. That PSX vibe from the 90s (and into the early 00s) is absolute bliss - the mix of jungle and liquid DnB has left an undeniable impression on me to this day. Absolutely cannot get enough of it. Would highly recommend checking out the Amigo Sampler by PotenzaDSP - highly versatile and has some serious magic under the hood for summoning these kinds of vibes. This track came out wonderfully - definitely reminiscent of something you'd hear in not only Ape Escape but from that era in general. I think I personally might have layered some sparse/spacey kind of lead or perhaps some deeper or more airy pad on the loop just to keep things progressing a little more, however this is fantastic as is. Great idea layering in the original game SFX with it as well to fully sell the concept - I'd genuinely presume the music was actually from the game. Regarding the hardware deep-dives, that'd be a really cool idea for a separate video/series/playlist. Delving into how you harness the gear you have and use it to realize what you're working toward. Keep up the great work either way!

Yo thanks so much for the VST recommendation! The Amigo Sampler looks dope I'll check it out. Also appreciate the feedback - I agree on more spacey leads. Some more reverb would help too! The Lossy Plugin I use has built-in reverb and I planned ahead of time to use that to try something different but I remember during production I found it kinda lacking and wishing I had instead just stemmed out the melodic content and ran it through my Meris Mercury X (I've done that every other video - love that reverb pedal lol). May also be a sign that I should learn more about the Lossy plugin itself. Anyways, awesome to see there are others that this era of VGM left such an impression on - thanks for checking it out :)

@@steed1364 Lossy is amazing for instantly setting the tone and really selling the era. I was half-tempted to pick up their Chase Bliss collab pedal but I think the VST would probably get some more use in the long-run. Speaking of pedals - the Meris Mercury X is absolutely gorgeous. Meris in general are nothing short of quality. I'm after opting to pick up a Microcosm myself after stewing on it for quite a while, hopefully arriving by the end of the week so I can't quite to delve in and explore it. Great job all the same brother, this series has been a joy to comb through. For what its worth - you talk about people skipping through to hear the finished product, and while that is understandable (especially with the direction of todays content being very on-demand), I just want to reach out and say that I really appreciate the talking sections themselves so thank you for leaving them in and giving people the option to learn as well as listen.

@@wardingtotem43 Totally agree on the Lossy pedal - I was SO tempted on release but just settled for the VST. The Microcosm is endless fun - lemme know how you end up liking it! Very cool hearing your thoughts, feedback, and kind words. Thanks again :)
