That's a good starting point - I think throwing in a bit of chromaticism is all that's needed to make your approach sound more sophisticated

Glad I'm not the only guitar player who watches these. I actually did set up my old keyboard after a week of watching his videos here and there. The thing must have been sitting in my closet for at least 10 years until now. I'm surprised it still works, even bought a sustain pedal for it.

I was watching the "Palouse Jazz Project" in Boise at a club called "The Sapphire Room". They were a sextet, and around halfway through the show there was a huge boom. Turns out the bass players bridge broke!! Luckily, the pianist was a jazz Professor and was able to finish off the show while playing bass on the left hand and comping. It was so impressive, and the bass player got to just chill out and watch haha XD

Julian - as a beginning bass player desperately wanting to develop interesting walking bass lines, this tutorial was great. I have developed a series of licks/patterns that walk me through the complete cycle of fifths and am able to apply these licks/patterns to most jazz standards. But - here's the problem!! Using the same licks over more than one chorus becomes boring. Your tutorial has opened up a new window for me. Thanks mate!!

I have found these jazz video clips invaluable references! I have been playing for many years and struggling through jazz styles, voicings, and improvisation. But since I have dedicated time to listen and practice your techniques my proficiency has increased exponentially! Thank you for sharing your gifts with the world of music!!!! GREAT STUFF!!!

BjHoneyFingers! Thanks for the comments - love the humor! I should have said that you don't have to use a walking bassline for every chord change. You could just use it on some of the changes to create a bit more energy and life, then just go back to a sustained bass note.
@jazztutorial11 жыл бұрын
Thanks Paul. I know exactly what you mean, & I actually cut out a short section on practice, but I think I might post the full version after reading this. I basically said that you want the left hand to become automatic, & to focus on the right hand. The way to get the left hand to be automatic is to practice just one bass line at a time (over a ii-V-I). The theory is that if you practice anything 2000 times you'll be able to do it without thinking. I think you can get there before 2000 though!

Actually yes - I've played guitar for years and always accepted that 'feel' is something you've either got, or you haven't. Rhythm and feel - can they be developed with practice? BTW Julian - I know music is music, but I'm amazed how your lessons transfer so well to my instrument (although I'm starting to develop a hankering to get my keyboard out) - thanks again for your inspirational tuition.

Great video! I have a suggestion, I'm not sure if you've covered it. I'm not sure what the name of it is, but it utilizes tritones as passing chords before minor chords. Eg if you were going to play an An minor 9 you would go a half step down from Ab then play its tritone so G and Db in your left hand and the major chord a whole step down from the Db in your right so Bb major. I think its used in gospel and neo soul a lot. I hope you can understand what I'm getting at!

Thanks for this long-awaited video. Bass lines are not that easy. I usually play the full chord in my left hand; Dmin7 (D F A C) then proceed to G7 (G B D F). Wich is not really good, but it doesn't sound bad.
