Two tips: To get one of Paul's voices, imagine you are him trying to sing like Elvis. It will sound a bit more like Paul than like Elvis, because you've heard Paul. Listen to him singing on She Came in Though the Bathroom Window to hear the voice I mean. It gave him that fat, smooth tone. Then the other thing is to practice using that smoothness on higher harmony parts like Paul does on Get Back, Every Little Thing, Eight Days a Week, the Night Before, etc. Actually, here's a third tip with Paul's voice: he listened to all the big African American singers like Smokey Robinson, little Richard, etc. His voice was enriched by spending time with all these influences before his Beatles songs. So practice a little every day this side project of doing your personal best to digest these other influences until you can draw your own feelings from them and enrich your Paul parts with them. Paul's voice broke the sound barrier in the Beatles and made them different from those other 60s bands trying to emulate them. I love what you did. This is all I really suggest to push things 1 notch higher.
@davidnovotnymusic6 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right. But Paul's voice is very high. My voice is very limited. I can't sing his harmonies easily. God doesn't give me perfect voice :D But It's 3 years I recorded this album and I did progress with my voice. In October I will release EP In The Beatles Style vol.2. I have recorded everything except my vocals. So I can try some of your tips. Thank you.
@Frst2nxt6 жыл бұрын
@@davidnovotnymusic I think you're on the right path. Paul finds a few ways of changing where he resonates here and there. When John sang, he often had tense muscles that constricted him. Compare his son Julian to him. Julian relaxes his voice more like Paul, but has a voice like John's. What I think helped Paul is imitating different sorts of voices, even the voices of female singers. He'd find a sweet spot in his throat or chest or head and experiment with it. The thing about black singers is that they often drop their jaw a certain way that opens up space around their tongue for higher notes. Trying soft voices in different ways is a good way to begin vocal experiments. You're young and have years to discover things about your voice that will delight you in your daily progress. You'll see. Also, when singing, try visualizing your diaphragm like someone is holding a ladder steady beneath your voice's feet, balancing the upper register with lower muscular support taking some of the strain. It may sound odd, but it's helped me to strengthen throat muscles and get out extra lengths of sustain or power towards hitting what were my weak points. But you're already off to a great start.

I'm a British guitar player and am so old that I remember the Beatles beginnings. Your analysis is very good and your style of reproduction quite authentic. I also live in Prague and would like to discuss this further. One element I believe is the Beatles early songs were very influenced by the vocal style of U.S. black girl vocal groups but their vocals being male gave the songs a different timbre which they married with guitars rather than orchestrated accompaniment thus creating the early Beatle sound, A very good example of this is Tell Me Why.
@LeChaunce6 жыл бұрын
Definitely -- Lennon and McCartney wanted to be the British Goffin/King, after all (I think they surpassed them), and so many of their cover tunes were the B-sides of classic girl group songs. Add that to the strong influence of Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, and Carl Perkins (George's love of Chet Atkins comes through strongly in those early licks and solos).

It was a pleasure to listen to your description of their chord structures and their relationship to their intros and melodies in general. The use of 6ths, of minors, as well as other chords and patterns, were a staple of the early Beatles. Wonderful description, composition, singing, and playing.

Thanks for this David, the Beatles really hold up well over time. On closer examination, their music is quite sophisticated and very well constructed. Your project is fantastic and sounds like a series of "lost" Beatles recordings or outtakes from the early sessions. I'm finding they use a lot of borrowed chords from the modes at crucial points of the songs, it helps me to think of them like altered secondary dominants. Also you have this very fluid switching between major and minor.
