I’m Thai, but I really like Burmese scripts. I think they’re beautiful, clean, and elegant. Burmese scripts were developed from Old Mon scripts. In Northern Thailand, we have scripts that develop from Old Mon scripts as well called Thai Tham scripts or Lanna scripts. For me I think they’re like the hybrid between Thai and Burmese scripts. They have similar orthography as Thai scripts with clean and elegant in shapes like Burmese scripts.

Whoa! These are like perfectly typographical my dude. Right off a chart we teach little kids to write neatly. My only tip is to make the circles more symmetrical. Like in ဆ,ဏ,တ, ဘ, the second curve or circle should stay the same size as the first. That’d make it look more natural! Everything else is just perfect. Either way, thank you for the video. This is gonna be a great resource for people interested in our language.

Fun Fact: The alphabets such as ဋ၊ ဌ၊ ဍ၊ ဎ၊ ဠ are rarely used ( they are only mostly used in words borrowed from Pali and Sanskrit) and so, many Burmese native speakers don’t know how to write them anymore. 😂
@koaungsan95852 жыл бұрын
Indeed. Even some of my friends and some little kids I know forgot how to write them and they're all students. But on the other hand, I'm so interested in Pāḷi and Sanskrit that I even know some alphabets we don't use anymore, like ၑ၊ ၐ၊ ၔ၊ ၕ, etc. I hope more people gets interested in Pāḷi. Pandemic really took away some kids' ဋ၊ ဌ၊ ဍ.

@@koaungsan9585 hey, can you tell how were those unused letters, used earlier? Which sounds did they denote? As an Indian, I might know these sounds although my script is different( Odia script).

Yes that's true because when I started speaking Burmese I didn't have to learn those. So it's true it's rarely used.
@koaungsan9585 Жыл бұрын
@@infinite5795 Oh! Sorry, I didn't see your comment earlier. From what I've known and read, ၐ is equivalent to Sanskrit "ś" ၑ is to "ṣ" ၔ is to "ḷ" and ၕ is to "ḹ" and ၒ and ၓ are equivalent to "ṛ" and "ṝ" respectively.

That's quite neat! I've heard that Burmese alphabets are very hard to learn. But yours look neat and clean! You're truly a master of calligraphy!
@kaneko89 Жыл бұрын
It’s not that hard to learn, here are some basics: There are around 2 of each consonant sound. Vowels are what you add to modify a consonant, there are 12. Dhamma chracter is for dhamma purpose only, it is not used in daily life. Some consonant break the 2 chracter rules, such as da တ and ta ထ (they are classified both as da sounds) and another ဒ da. There is also pha ဖ and pa ပ (pha is soft P, pa is hard P), and then a အ, ha, ဟ, tha သ who only have one consonant for their sound.
@kaneko89 Жыл бұрын
And the shapes are very simple, it only takes very few strokes to write.
@kaneko89 Жыл бұрын
For example, you can cheat a bit by turning your paper upside down and write yapalet ယ to make a ka က (hard K) chrcrater. Or zamyintzwe ဈ, you just need sa lone စ and ya pint ျ to make zamyintzwe ဈ. And then for nga င, you can just do a C.

It's because the writing systems of Southeast Asian languages are derived from the Brahmi script, despite the spoken languages belonging to different language families. When you look at several Southeast Asian scripts next to each other you start to see the similarities of the characters much more easily than if you compare only 2. As a side-note, while Thai language doesn't have a Go sound, the character still has a cognate in Thai which looks quite similar to the Burmese Ga but it's voiced as another Kho, representing a different consonant class (different tone rules). So, Thai begins with Ko Kho Kho. This is not the only example, and it's the reason why foreign learners often complain about duplicate letters in Thai. It's also why Guru becomes Khru, and Garuda becomes Khrut.
