I truly wish I could get that through a friend's head. A really good guitarist once told him decades ago that he "just kind of lets it flow..". My friend took that to mean "I don't have to learn anything" Once in a while he's in key, but more often that not he just makes noise. Thinks it's all good. Wonders why nobody wants to play with him.

I think that the hardest part of songwriting is making a song that is able to be dynamic but just enough to keep casual listeners as well as musicians interested in your music. For example most of us listen to Dream theater for their brilliant songwriting and how dynamic the music is but a lot of people that are not music enthusiasts get overwhelmed by music that has many changes. I personally love when a song has many dimensions and doesn't stick to one riff or rythm.
@SignalsMusicStudio6 жыл бұрын
I agree 100%. Variety and contrast is what makes things interesting. I think the best music is the stuff that might seem simple on the outside, but is ridiculously complicated on the inside (stuff like my beatles / beach boys video). I did literally spend years thinking I couldn't make music though, just because I didn't know how to string diatonic chords together. A lot of musicians just wanna write 4 chord music, and thats fine- I just want to make it easier for them to do it!
@chromaticswing91996 жыл бұрын
I personally love it when a song sticks to one riff or rhythm! There are so many subtle differences that add dimension while preserving the central motif. It's also a great exercise in songwriting to limit yourself in that way, forcing other creative muscles to work.

Hey man, I love the way you explain things and I have learned quite a bit from your channel. I really like this video because it explains very simple, macro-level concepts about chord progressions. I've watched so much music theory videos on youtube and so many of them are too complex for me to use or just recap basic vocabulary (as opposed to teaching how to *use* that vocabulary). This video said nothing I haven't heard before but still opened my eyes. I had never thought of starting at the I and ending on the IV or V as being like, an essential blueprint so to speak for writing a chord progression, even though I knew the I was the most consonant chord and the IV and V resolved to the I. It put it together in a practically applicable way that I just haven't encountered in all my years casually flipping through this genre of video on the site.

I love how you don't make us feel we can't do anything. You make us feel anything is possible ❤️

Meanwhile my guitar instructor's been making me read music for the last 2 months, he needs to set his priorities right

If you learn to read music it really will help with understanding chord progressions. It's all part of the same whole.

My guitar teacher made me pay him $100 a week to watch him shred. He got $200 out of me before I used the free ass internet.

Next time you have a cold or sore throat sing as hard and as growly as you can till you your completely horse. Your voice box will heal with more timbre to it that and lift weights, lifting weight will naturally heighten your testosterone which will make your voice deeper.

@@Voxelize well I used to get tonsillitis really bad all the time and I would sing through it because although it hurt it gave me some relief people would always think I'm putting on a deep voice afterward and it was annoying, then a few years ago watching a programme about actors particularly leading men in the 50s there agents would encourage them to be around sick people and or smoke then go to a high altitude and sing untill they couldn't anymore. After all your throat is a muscle if you break it down it grows back bigger and stronger just like your muscles.

@@royeaston6067 Do not do this. This will cause Vocal Fold Scarring and it ruin your vocal folds. Just because other people do this does NOT mean it is safe.

This was great! I took years of university music theory to get my bachelor's degree in performance, but it left me paralyzed, because I was a perfectionist. Knowing all the rules made me feel like I couldn't write more songs without doing it wrong. It made the idea of writing music NO FUN. Thank you for the encouragement and simple approach.
