I have a degree in music composition. My composition teacher died young. You've really helped fill a void there ❤ thanks for all your sage advice on here.

Like many other topics on music theory that MM covers, when this started I had no idea about what to do. I kept listening, and have another arrow to load into my quiver. And for a beginning piano student this became a less daunting task. I have started a second weekly piano lesson at a more posh school. My teacher saw my interest in Bach Chorales and we started analyzing a four voice chorale. I argued that a passing note made the dominant chord a D7. She disagreed since she felt there was a modulation taking place and that it sounded to her like a passing tone. And we talked about the genius of Bach. She said that she was in graduate school before she did analysis of the chorales, but then did a lot of analysis. That motivated me, and I have Music Matters to thank for that. Merci Gareth et Alex. Merci beaucoup.

As always, great advice. I find it harder to parse falling notes than rising notes. I'm not sure why. But as with anything, I'm sure more practice will help.

Capturing a melody from your mind seems to me a crucial skill, as it's very often the initial step in any composition.
