This is a common mistake in people's lives. You have to think outside of your mind patterns. You think that writing takes hours. Just do it for 3 minutes. You think working out takes 45-120minutes, just train 3 minutes. You need to build a routine. With time you will increase those 3 minutes to the time you prefere. Your prefered / needed time is tailored to your mind. It is not the same time all the time. Also you don't have to train or write in already predetermined places. Just do what suits you. And some day it will become a routine and your passion.

i've been writing for almost 7 years now. the first 5 I wrote everyday. Whether it was a feature or a short film or web series. I even picked up poetry just as ways to express your thoughts and story. Eventually as I got better and had a new feature length idea to work on, i had goals of how many pages I should be writing a day. At first I aimed for 7 and for a while I kept that up. But it was very tough, I don't think I could do that now. So I lowered the goal a day on the next feature script to 3 pages a day. My logic in that was 30 days in a month, I'd roughly have the script done in a month or so. Outlining also made things easier, the stagnant moments of thought were diminished cause I already had something to follow. Last thing I'd say is this. Writing is like going to the gym. It's tough in the beginning to build that habit, but once you do you'll feel off if you haven't written that day or over a few days. Once you build the habit things really take off from there.

Ok so i recently just finished my first feature length script, which i have been working on for 8 months and although the process was long, it was fun and easy. basically what you want to do is get your story completely set out, before you even think about starting writing. use 'The Board' technique from save the cat and just plan every story beat out. if you aren't sure about your story in the slightest, then scrap it and try again until you have one that you think about in the back of your mind constantly. now once you know you story inside and out, write it. sit down once a day and write just one single page, but take weekends off . now taking these weekends off helps a lot because the weekend is a time where you most likely are doing something or just wanna chill and forcing yourself to write on these days will give you negative thoughts towards the project. during the day, make sure your thinking of what you are going to write so you know what your going to write for that night and after finishing the page for that day, give your self a little note reminding what happens next, or any new ideas you had while writing. set a timer on your phone to tell you to write. i personally set mine to 19:30. i understand this method may not work for everyone, as not everyone one has that much time on their hands. it worked for me really well, but that may just be because i'm 14 and has nothing better to do. thanks for reading and hope this method works for you and may these screenplays that we write one day become real.

I build stories in my head on a daily basis. I have social anxiety and depression, and any time I start to feel I’m loosing control in a situation, my brain automatically thinks up a story prompt and begins forming the plot. Whenever I can’t handle the pressure in a situation that day, I will build on to my story. I connect my story to some of the feelings I’m having in that situation. If I’m overwhelmed, my character will be put into a situation that is overwhelming to them. Then I think of how they get out of that mindset and come to a resolution to the story and my own problems. By creating these stories I’m not only building my “library”, but I’m helping myself escape dangerous thinking!

One thing that makes me procrastinate less is associating a specific album or a couple of albums (max) to a given screenplay that I'm writing and put it on before a writing session. It always works for me, it's the best way to get in the zone of your story. Play it on repeat until the album BECOMES your story, so whenever you play it it'll trigger you to go back to that world and you'll be able to write, even if it's a sentence.

Thanks for the "input = output" strategy. You can only give out as much as you take in. The ideas you get, gets processed to have a greater output. Thanks for this.

Honestly, it comes second nature. If your not writing your experiencing life so you’re making mental notes. To translate it onto paper isn’t sitting down and typing for 6+ hours its a note in an outline you come back to here and there, and then eventually you have a story you can write. I find music a big help to get ideas too, and doing this filming thing with a part time job it gives me time to dive into the music i want to use for my films as well.

Yes times five. Thank you for this, Darious, it's inspiring. I've made a living as a writer since 1972, and as D4D would say, this is dope advice. Notes are huge. I'm taking notes now on a new project that has involved getting up at 5 or 5:30 and singing for 30-60 minutes, OCR'ing a really crappy PDF of a 1980 article, remembering advice from a spiritual teacher in the mid-1970s, and a story told to me by a friend around the same time. Notes are absolutely key. "The best memory is not half so firm as faded ink." (Chinese saying.) I've published three books in the last five years with another in the works and two or three more down the line. Notes, notes, notes, notes, notes. Projects that evolve this way are a joy. I can't imagine trying to pre-plan it all in my brain - the writing would be wooden, stilted, formulaic. Ugh. Clairefontaine notebooks are great, they don't fall apart in a jeans pocket.

The procrastination I've been doing is completely non-productive and when I have done productive procrastination it was by accident or in a school environment where I didn't realize that's what was happening. This is definitely what I use all the time. Being a screenwriter (to me) is kind of like being an artisanal soup maker. You keep a bunch of concoctions simmering on the stove, occasionally adding new ingredients until they’re ready to come off the burner to be served. Sometimes they boil over. Sometimes you lose interest in one, but some of the ingredients make a base for something new. Some you can only keep simmering for so long before they lose flavor. It’s all about finding the balance because each soup is different. And yes, it’s surprising how much that metaphor works. 🤔

I am a production coordinator and designer for a bunch of musical ensembles. This is the exact process I use. All of the shows that I have to create for have a musical AND visual component to them, but all of my clients want them to be completely unique. So my task is to write some of the same stories, but in different ways. I use this process to come across uncommon connections between works and spark new ideas that then help my composing and visual design elements work synergistically. Creative input sparks creative output.

You're describing my life. Still haven't written any scripts though. I think my problem is I'm still not used to actually expressing the words on a page. Hence why "writing every day" sounds like appropriate advice for me. It's like learning to draw: there was a time when I sucked at drawing but did it every day because I enjoyed the process regardless (and I had a lot of time on my hands). Then I improved to the point where I don't need to draw every day yet when i do the results are far better than it used to be. There's a degree to which you simply have to do the activity for an extended period of time to get over whatever mental blocks you might have, after which you can just do it when needs be. What you're describing sounds more like staying motivated. I have the opposite problem: I'm always motivated, but getting it documented is a hurdle.

Love this idea. Unknowingly I've been doing this on and off. One cool exercise I also found useful is to write down, or do my best to write down, 20 story ideas in one minute. Short sentences or even few words like man eats snakes. Doesn't matter if they are good or bad, just do it a couple of times when you're feeling ideas are not coming easy or you're feeling blocked. It opens up your creativity. Then each time you're looking for new ideas go over the list and pick the ones that you like the most, if you don't like any try again.

Works for me. I got to know I was doing this a little over a year ago. 👍🏽

Akira Kurosawa said he would write at least one page a day. He was a dishwasher in a restaurant and would on his 30 min break write one page. Over time he had a complete script. I try and do this every day.

I struggle to get into writing and then into production but I've gotten super lucky to start doing music videos to stay active with the process and it's helped my writing a lot because I'm being asked to come up with quick, unique, and out of my comfort zone ideas. And, I'm taking notes the whole time. I've grown more in the past six weeks than I did in the two years prior.

I have also been doing this the whole time, it's just so natural.

I do this all the time. I try to write everyday, since it is my life's dream, but some days are harder than others. Surprisingly, what gets my inspiration flowing is by drawing, specifically somethings from my story. Whether that be a location, an item, or a chracter.

Thank you for clarifying this. I was also under the impression that it meant physically writing everyday. I forgot about idea generation that can come from immersing oneself in one’s environment with a variety of productive procrastination methods.
