i love the whole "building excitement for the next day" part of this process. i'd never thought of it before but if you write that early in the morning, i'm sure you not only have lots of time to build excitement for the next day, but you also have a whole day to organically brainstorm/daydream about what happens next

9:35 it's so interesting hearing you talk about being a morning person like this because i say the same thing about being a night owl, i love how everyone is asleep and at peace and i'm awake, it's like i'm the only one there

I agree. In the morning, the world is waking up, cars, people with dogs. Maybe in the old world, the one Hemingway inhabited, this would work, but at night, the world is descending into quiet which will go on for hours. This is better for me.

You know you’ve hit on something grand when everyone who comments is clearly inspired, or clearly wants to be just like you, or to reveal that they are already. I sense a habit coming on.

Why don’t we run away as soulmates must? the chugging of our chests with every leap; the jolting muscles make our clothes untucked. The judging wedding guests too shocked to speak. Isn’t that what we’re made for anyway? Thy Kathy at the shattered window haunts; a hair you’d hate to push back into place because in flight was when it came undone. Before forced vows are through, stand, “I object!” Beyond this chapel barn, the world unrolls. I’d say we’re what the moors were meant to catch. The bride is shocked she’s freed; it’s time to go. Let’s storm the aisle ‘s lane prematurely. Why should we both forever hold our peace? .. a sonnet that I wrote, dedicated to a man who reached out to me after a breakup, and it's also inspired by Wuthering Heights.

I magically found your channel today and I have to say I am in awe. I could have just simply not looked up your name; it was a matter of seconds, but I am so glad I did. The beauty you possess is unquantifiable, not only in the physical aspect (in which of course we all see how pretty you are) but also in the way you speak, your soft and comforting words, your bright smile, your taste in decoration, your clothing style, and even the music you choose for your videos. It truly feels like watching some movie set. This form of art of yours (the video production but also the art of life, at least what we see on the other side of the screen) is impeccable, in the visual matter but most importantly, in the quality of your being. I truly don´t know how to explain everything that I´m feeling... I am sure half of what I said didn´t even make sense, so a good summary of it would be: you are stunningly captivating

"An interviewer once asked ERNEST HEMINGWAY, "Isn't there any one essential ingredient you can identify which makes a great writer?" Hemingway replied, "Yes, there is. In order to be a great writer, A PERSON MUST HAVE A BUILT-IN SHOCK-PROOF, CRAP DETECTOR." And that's what my idea of true education is. THE CHILDREN SHOULD BE TRAINED, DISCIPLINED, SO THAT THEY CAN DETECT CRAP. A really intelligent person is a CRAP DETECTOR. He immediately knows, the moment he says something, whether it is significant or just holy cow dung."

This was a wonderful video, so informative -- I learned to stop right before I know what I'm going to write next -- thank you, Dakota! With regard to your desire to grow with your art and not know really when to stop a piece, a professor I had last semester in a writing workshop/ seminar told us that you'll never "feel done/ready" and so to publish once you have a full piece all together that you think is pretty right on. You'll grow with your art as a whole, each novel or poem reflects a point or set of points along your journey and the next reflects those after. I love you, beautiful soul!

You could also try a completely different routine. Jack London was, in his day, the highest paid, most prolific author in the US and his most famous works were international sellers. For context, London grew up in poverty, lived a life of adventures from a young age, and mined those adventures for his stories. He made his living writing and had numerous rather expensive projects to support. As one who has always made a living writing, often for others as a journalist and non-fiction writer - not always getting to write my own projects - I understand London's context. His routine, like Hemingway's, was an early start on the day. He worked until he had written 1,000 words. That would be about 5 double-spaced typewritten pages. This routine probably won't suit your particular writing projects and lifestyle, but it would be a very different viewpoint for your writing day and might exercise completely different writing muscles.

I used to be a morning writer... and then I had kids. They're great, but wow do they sap you of energy. Now I write at the end of the day. Somehow, that's when I have my creative juices at their peak, but I recently went back to prose after about an eighteen year hiatus. Screenwriting is great, but it's also not as expressive, and it's really a blueprint for someone else to make into a work of art. At some point you will have to let your love (manuscript) go out into the world, but I do get that whole coming back and finding something new that you must change in the story. It's a blessing and a curse. Well, I'm off to try and wrap up draft 4 of my sci-fi novella. Good hunting, Dakota.

He's one of the most sincere writers you can think of not because he's the most professional or because he's got a bunch of Pulitzers. It's because he throws 120% of his authentic self into everything, including the whole "gonzo phase" that made him famous. Everybody seems to forget the "genius" part of his "manic genius", but he definitely had a self awareness that seems like he's lived a thousand lifetimes, but in reality, he's had a million experiences that shaped a more complete worldview in his journalism days than most people ever hope to have in their entire lives.

I'm the same with the morning writing thing. I love getting up nice and early and like hemmingway said, the peace and isolation of the mornings Is something I really find so inspiring. However I only write for a few hours, might try taking advantage of that flow state for longer. ANYWAY, all this to say, it's a lovely thing to start figuiring out your creative routine and when everything just clicks and works well it's so satisfying.
