The only reason because he still haven't played the bassoon is because it costs an awful lot... When he will have it the hands, let's have fun with it too!

I came here from Adam Neely and Ben Levin's Beautiful and Tragic livestream and you add so much to that album, which I've listened to like 6 times now. Great content. Thanks.

Great vid! Thank you for giving my instrument some respect! A note about garkleins, they can only go up to a high A. Some models can tune up a Bb, but A is a pretty set in stone stopping point for gark. I work mostly on tenors through sub great bass on my channel, so I rarely touch my gark, but folks shouldn’t assume they can ask for the top C of the piano on a gark. 😀

Recorders can actually go down to B3 (by covering the bell slightly) and up to A6 but notes from F#6 to A6 can be really unstable and must be played fortissimo, E6 is only possible with a B extension or by covering the bell slightly. Some notes can actually have a wide dynamic range while others not really.

As an intermediate self learning student of recorder, this is an excellent introduction on the recorder theory as a music instrument! It would be nice to point out that 2 octaves and a second is not something to scoff at, if anything it's perfect to play melodic passages that fit the vocal range (by rule of thumb, we humans sing in two octaves two!), so my tip would be to write for the recorder as if you'd write for a singer

On a related note, I'd love to know more about the tin whistle. What are the most important differences between it and recorder, two seemingly very similar instruments?

It's even harder to play chromatically on a tin whistle. Any notes that are outside the diatonic set can only be reached by half-covering holes

Similar: both are fipple flutes, as in, they are essentially whistle with tubes. The theory on articulation is the same, and they are both relatively inexpensive. A cheap model from each can start at around 10 to 20 dollars. Difference: Recorders have 8 holes (right pinky and left thumb hole), while tin whistles have 6. They are widely different on what they can play. Recorders are chromatic instruments, as in they can by default play every note in the chromatic scale (C to C, with all the sharps and flats included). Tin whistles are diatonic instruments, where they can only play intentionally within the scale which the whistle was constructed within (if your whistle is in D, it will mostly play in the scale of D major and nothing else). They can play some chromatic notes, but only a handful. So, does that mean Recorders are better than Tin Whistles, because they play more notes? I think not. Tin Whistles have a much different tone to Recorders - if you could dissect a recorder, you'd see they are built like a cone that gets wide at the mouthpiece and thin at the end, while tin whistles are like straight tubes. Recorders sound a lot softer than tin whistles, and lower too. It's mostly because Tin Whistles play a lot of folk music - obviously it's popular with Irish Folk but it can appear elsewhere too. Tin whistles, even though they are diatonic, have this "folky" and wide loud sound that can fire up a party, while Recorders are like this kind of instrument where you play in an ensemble music setting, going along some other instruments, and playing in a place with proper acoustic setting, like an acoustic theater or a church, depending where you are. Recorders can play fast and energetic music, but in my opinion Tin Whistles excel at that. Also, because Tin Whistles have less forked fingerings and less holes, they are easier to play fast and put ornamentation than in the recorder, as long as you practice to play them. That's why I like Tin Whistles to play virtuously, their appeal is to flourish the music. But the ability for the recorder to play a soft tone and to play chromatic notes makes it versatile to play a wide variety of music genres, not only classical music, but even jazz, folk, blues, and more stuff I can't remember right now. *TL;DR*: similar instruments, different universes. Recorders play soft, tin whistles play fast. Recorders are flexible, tin whistles are better enjoyed with ornaments. Tin whistles get along well with folk music, while recorders have a sweet spot with classical. But both can go outside the comfort zone, given the creativity and the skill of the player.

As a pro recorder player, we have to be used to alternative fingerings for dynamics.

This is a suuuper nerdy question but is there a difference between flattement and bisbigliando? I know that term is primarily used to denote a harp technique but I’ve heard it used for woodwinds. Thoughts?
@JoshPlotner
@JoshPlotner 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah there’s definitely a difference. Bisbigliando is much more of a timbral trill than vibrato. It’s usually a lot more chaotic, or at least noticeable. Flattement is a much gentler technique for the most part.
