Hey there! Katie here- EB Team Member! As a SPED teacher I always taught essays by "chunking" them. We would work on them together in small groups one paragraph at a time. This allowed me to really see where the gaps where and provide more instruction in those areas. It also lessened the overwhelm for my students and helped them to become more confident writers.

I really love this philosophy on teaching writing and agree that writing should be creative, spontaneous, and student-led. What are your thoughts on using an authentic text as the model rather than a teacher-created text? I can see the benefit of even having multiple texts to model/pull strategies from (or, as we call them, "writing moves")?

Absolutely! Having different texts to pull from will help you to differentiate and meet the needs of all of your students.
