Summary for you guys :) Personal Statement to-do list: -Dont mention things that they already know : grades, refrences and name etc. -SPACE IS LIMITED. -70/30 Academic-Personal split - Academic: what interested you, talks you've listened to , books you've read. Prove excitement on the subject. -Non academic: Things like student leadership team things youve done etc. link to university transferrable skills - Teamwork, communication etc. link to course -Know the book you mention -newspaper articles,journals, ted talks, podcasts mistakes : dont just try to sound intelligent. say more about less -your academic ability, independent thoughts, opinions -dont exaggerate -Talk about the moment you gained the passion. - Linking other subjects you study to your degree. -prove you are actively engaged in the subject. -google scholar jstor -you can chose to start off with a question or even a quote as long as you refer back to the statement. -dont expect it to be perfect straight away DRAFT Accept criticism from teachers

I wrote my personal statement in 1 hour at 2am, didn't edit it at all and got offers from everywhere I applied to. I genuinely think this is my greatest accomplishment. Needless to say I put considerably more effort into my PhD application 😂. Edit: Nobody do what I did I'm just insanely lucky.

I had a similar situation; I wrote mine on deadline day and didn't finish the application until 10 minutes before the deadline, got offers from all unis I applied to faster than some people I knew who applied 2 months before.

I did most of what Jack suggested here and I've ended up studying Law with European legal systems a AAA course despite having lower predicted grades and originally getting BBC this past results day and I definitely think my whole application helped my case massively so don't underestimate its importance!

On advice from teachers, the only non-academic thing I wrote on my personal statement was 'I also enjoy ballet and creative writing.' None of the unis I applied to had an issue with that. I genuinely think one line is all you really need.

I’m so unprepared for mine and it’s actually causing me so much stress and anxiety. I am a very chatty person a lot of the time you can’t shut me up because I love to talk to people but the one time I need to sell myself to the uni I am applying for I just can’t. Something in my mind is giving me Writers block. I think it’s a mixture of Stress, anxiety, reality, pressure and depression. My school 🏫 isn’t very helpful when it comes to this sort of stuff because they don’t really explain to us what we should have in our personal statements.
