Firstly, you don't need blood and death to make a story interesting or to have stakes. You just need to make it seem like the antagonist can win and the protagonist can lose. Secondly, japan and manga didn't invent power systems, that's just a meta-term coined by modern fans. It's not an idea associated with any particular source and goes back into story telling from ye olde times. The foundation of power systems is just explaining abilities in a story so the audience understands what's going on. The specificity of modern power systems may be associated with the expansion of nerd culture (comics, anime, video games, internet debates, etc). With more nerd culture, more complex systems to describe common super powers helps differentiate Jotaro enhanced melee combat from Gon's enhanced melee combat so writers don't have to invent completely unique ideas for their stories. They can recycle tropes infinitely. One can also attribute this to modern audiences wanting more detailed rules either for said internet debates or maybe to help suspend disbelief in how the story unfolds. Basically, they don't just want to know Goku is really really strong but also to what extent and what fuels his strength and how that compares to others so they can judge if the outcome makes sense from their point of view. Power systems, and it's more mature cousin Magic systems, will always have to strike a balance in complexity when conveying it to an audience.

First of all, cool video! I'd love to see more of your work is the future. Lots of people talk about anime stuff on youtube, but I always like finding more content creators. Second thing, my somewhat controversial opinion about Nen and Quirks (from Hunter x Hunter and My Hero Academia). Note that i am talking about just the power systems, not the story/writing/characters. In my opinion, Nen is a bit overrated as a power system. In theory, anyone can develop any power, and have multiple abilities, even from different "classes". But in practice, aside from few of the main characters, each character has a single ability which is completely different from any other ability, to the degree that classifying them is almost pointless (based on my observations from the anime. It could be different in the manga). Also there are "generic" applications of Nen that don't require specializing into any of the "classes", but those are hardly used aside from "power up punch" and "power up defense". The end result is that Nen is actually very similar to quirks, where each character has only 1 unique ability. Now, i'm not saying that Nen is bad. Far from it, it is a cool power system. It's just less interesting and amazing than people think it is. Also a note on quirks, while functioning similar to Nen (if i convinced you in anything), the biological nature of this system allows the creator to tackle issues such as discrimination, social classes and eugenics (to various degrees of success). It also creates a lot of plot holes and issues with worldbuilding, but that's a different subject.

@@Lilith_Harbinger Yeah, I do agree that even though Nen is 'perfect' in theory, HxH doesn't really go too in depth with the system in most of the fights. At least in the anime. I haven't read the manga

i know lol it's pretty mid. in the video i talk about creating a perfect power system, that doesn't necessarily mean that the examples are perfect. i used MhA because it is a very well known anime with a 'genetic' power system
