Perhaps my most favourite gaming experience I've ever had. My dad saw me playing it one Saturday morning, about a week after I acquired it, he sat with me for an hour or so, transfixed. We then went on the football match, watched Burnley get stuffed, returned home and the first thing he said? "Do you want to bring your playstation into the front room and play that Lara game?" This was unheard of in my house, my mum went nuts when she realised what was going on, my dad said "just watch him play this, it's incredible"......and from that moment, for the next month or so, every single night, without fail, even with my mum missing episodes of Coronation Street to accommodate this new viewing experience, my mum and dad watched me play through the game from start to finish. We argued about the puzzles, got scared at entering the great unknown, my mum shouting "shoot it! Shoot it!!!!!". It was absolutely brilliant. The three of us, in the front room, glued to this bloody masterpiece of a game.

Never was the biggest fan of the series but I deeply respect it for what it contributed to the industry. As one of the first 3D action adventure platformers, I'd say the first game was damn revolutionary for its era. Honestly, I rather miss the iconic original look and character of Lara Croft than the latest iteration of her in a reboot.

I'm currently playing through Tomb Raider III on PS1. I beat TR1 and 2 over the past couple months. It had been 20+ years, It was an amazing experience with TR1 but a painful reminder of how much I hate TR2 with its action over adventure gameplay and waaaaay too many Human foes. TR3 is a breath of fresh air. Currently in Nevada. When finished I'll be hitting up Last Revelation on Dreamcast.
@ultrairrelevantnobody18623 жыл бұрын
@HIGHscores 85 God, I so relate to you. I hated Tomb Raider 2 when playing the first few levels, to the point that after having finished Tomb Raider 1 I skipped straight into 3. Tomb Raider 3 is not a perfect game and I would still hold the first game as superior, but it's by far my favourite of the old games.

Fantastic video! The best thing about Tomb Raider 5, despite it kind of fizzling out, was that they released their level editor with the PC version. There has been a small but steady community around the game, keeping it alive over the years, providing a lot of new levels of classic Tomb Raider to play. That makes it kind of a nice cap off to the original few games I feel.

My first ever experience with Tomb Raider was actually a demo of Tomb Raider II. So for our early childhood, my mom stayed at home with my brother and me while my dad worked at a bodega which was right next door to us. We lived in the hood but honestly my parents were so protective that I don't think of my childhood like that, it was honestly idyllic. My parents were immigrants and my mom had ambitions of going back to college but needed to learn English first. So she learned it from my brother and me, from horror movies, and from video games. & those are my most fond childhood memories. We would walk like 30 minutes away to the nearest Hollywood Video store to rent games or movies. So we bought a PlayStation and at first we mostly played child-friendly games. But then we rented this CD with a bunch of PlayStation demos. This thing had Spyro, MediEvil, Rayman, I think Tekken... and of course fucking Tomb Raider. It changed our lives. It was the Venice level of Tomb Raider II. At first my mom was hesitant for us to play it....it literally starts with you having to shoot a dog and then a bunch of henchmen. But she gave it a try and by then it was too late....we were all hooked. Well we get to the part after you climb up and you take out the bad guys then you shoot out the window and it's clear you need to jump across the canal towards the hanging red awning (you all know it). WELP, we couldn't figure it out. Back then with no guides and Lara not telling you what to do every 7 seconds like the new games, plus with it being a demo and us not getting the tutorial from Lara's Home, we had no idea that she had to do a running jump in order to be able to grab the ledge. I remember thinking we've tried everything, we almost gave up. EXCEPT in come our slightly older cousins who are very into gaming. So we ask them if they know of a little game called Tomb Raider. "DO WE KNOW IT?" They pull out a copy of Tomb Raider I, Tomb Raider II, and a demo disc which contained the Area 51 prison level of Tomb Raider III. We were in awe. So we told them how we got stuck on that demo of Tomb Raider II. They said well duh you have to do a running jump and pulled out the Lara's Home tutorial and showed us how. We excitedly told our mom, we finished the demo and went out and bought Tomb Raider I and II. & our cousins let us borrow that demo disc with Tomb Raider III. I was in awe. My mom tells me I would jump around the house pretending to be Lara lol. Well that's how Tomb Raider became my absolutely favorite game series ever. I would say Tomb Raider II is probably still my favorite, maybe because it was my first experience of it and also the one I've played the most often. But I can def understand why some love the first one the most with its more immersive feel of the caves and the solitude, where II has a bit more urban environments and facing off with human enemies, and then III takes that up a notch and is insanely difficult. But I also think The Last Revelation is pretty great and lowkey underrated, I just wish it didn't start you off with that annoying ass tutorial level with Von Croy that you can't skip. I'm playing through the new trilogy now and am halfway through Shadow and I do like the games for what they are, but they're just.... different. Not really a Tomb Raider game and the main character is just not really Lara. I think the original trilogy + Last Revelation deserves a remaster like they did with Spyro. I would def pay the big bucks for that, just saying Crystal Dynamics.

1:05:29 - 1.05.44 Did we play the same game? Tomb Raider 3 not only puts far more restraint on the combat, but also significantly addresses Tomb Raider 2's downright appalling enemy design and placement. It's legitimately one of the worst cases I have ever seen in a 3D Platformer, and the former did a good job of steering mostly clear of this.
@virvum_cypher3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I never understood all of the praise for TR2, given it's horrid over-use of combat. I think TR1 did it perfectly. TR3 was went overboard with general difficulty though. TR4 was on par with TR1 imho.
@samuelbrent26583 жыл бұрын
@@virvum_cypher I do agree that 3 can be needlessly unfair with some of its design. I'm just glad the majority of the unfairness comes from either sparse traps and set pieces, or obtuse puzzle solving. That's way easier to remember on repeat playthroughs compared to the quantity of carelessly placed enemies that start to blend in after a while. There's a reason why I can still play it with little to no obligation. The Last Revelation is fantastic, a massive adventure game with some of the best puzzle design of its time. The only reason I prefer 1 and 3 is because it does have a couple of glaring level design oversights that can potentially force you to restart the entire game. Other than that, it's a great time.
