+SixFingeredAmish yeah but people from 3rd world countries do not make the market demand meaning that they do not have the relevant means to purchase the good anyway f they didn't have the means to pirate, in all likelihood they wouldn't consume such a luxury. obviously, there is those present who pirate regardless of their disposable income but the masses don't have the money or the source to buy such a luxury. I remember the time when I had the will/money to buy an app on play store but the only hurdle was payment method, so I had to crack the app.
@lltheFacell

+Qin Zhu It is a luxury. It is not necessary to survive therefore it is only consumed when there is expendable income. Saying it's greedy for companies to want to make profit off what they put out is ignorant and completely ignores basic principles of economics and business. If they weren't making money, there wouldn't be an industry in the first place.
@hasaanmasood
@hasaanmasood 8 жыл бұрын
lltheFacell technically the people belonging to the low income group and 3rd world countries do not make up the effective demand. Blizzard uses torrent technology. It's not just for illegal activity.
@cwestpha
@cwestpha 8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Gowdey Well almost every MMO now uses some kind of torrenting technology to keep costs low and increase patching speeds for their updates. Hell, even Windows 10 now has a Peer to Peer updates feature that works a bit like BitTorrent. Then there is the open source movement that uses BitTorrent to help with quickly pushing out new ISO releases to switchers. Nothing about the technology is illegal, its just the most common use is because it's so robust and distributed... and those two features are seeing it gain acceptance in other spaces. They just often don't advertise its Bittorent or call it something else (i.e. Steam).
@portzblitz
@portzblitz 8 жыл бұрын

@@Kipplz Seeding is basically mean that when you finish download something like a zip or a rar file or any data, you give some of it (upload) to let other download from your computer giving faster download speed and makes it harder to track. Leeching is pretty much the same as seeding but you intentionally prevent other from downloading the data you just download on your computer which pretty make the download for other slower.

Valve told a while ago, the reason why people go to pirates is because the original distributor does a bad job of making the offer seem worth it. The example they used was Russia. Back then, when a new game released, Russian fans would have to wait at least a month, pay a large price, when compered with what they earned. At the same time, pirates would provide it on the same say of release, for free. Most pf the times pirates did a much better job at brining the game to the players. When valve started to sell its games in Russia, they released them on the same date as everywhere, with a pricing policy that lowered prices for Russia.

rips found via torrent are so much more high quality than streaming, it baffles me
@Living_Dead_Girrl
@Living_Dead_Girrl 2 ай бұрын
What makes this even more baffling is that most are ripped from a streaming service - and stream in much higher quality with zero lag on your network. The issue appears to be their lack of video caching on streaming devices, which perhaps is to “prevent” downloading (fails anyways because they cheap out on updating video encoders that’ve had gaping security holes for up to a decade), requiring you to use tons of data loading and reloading the same content, and the file itself is heavily compressed causing massive loss in quality, just so it can buffer quickly. When playing a cached video, there’s zero lag in the controls. Pretty sure streaming services that enable “downloading for offline viewing,” are simply downloading an encrypted cached file to your system. They’re stifling technological progress… and wasting our data.

Everything fine until "... real reason is you're stealing things". First of all, you described peer-to-peer transmission, that's not necessarily torrent transmission. Many servers use exactly this concept to balance traffic and diverge content (it actually was the idea behind Tim Berners-Lee's drafts of the early World Wide Web), the first "implementation" of the WWW, USENET used this concept; many downloaders and installers use this very same mechanism to leverage traffic to users (Blizzard's WoW and Starcraft 2 downloaders come to mind, but I'm sure there're many others), Google used to use a similar concept inside its offices (pretty sure they still use it), many decentralized networks at local and wide local levels work like this (as I said before, the first idea behind the WWW worked like this), SMTP email uses a P2P layer as well, Tor works at some level with P2P in mind. Have you ever heard of the SETI@Home project? BOINC? IBM's World Community Grid? Torrents are a very small piece on the great scheme of peer to peer communications. Stealing things is even smaller. I always ALWAYS use bittorrent options to download open source software and most open source enthusiasts I know do it as well. Also, "stealing" may be technically right but... it doesn't really feel like stealing when most movie studios would bring to court anyone and everyone who "steals" a single copy of a film for which they earned billions and they released it when, where and how they wanted. Like... a TV series a month after premiere on its original country... and dubbed? Try harder.

He makes it sound like torrents are used only for illegal activity, but lots of big corporations use P2P to distribute their files and reduce their server load. In fact, Microsoft was using P2P to serve Windows 10 to users.

Let me correct you us pirates are not stealing anything we are simply borrowing the content, oh unless you mean the money that they make. Sorry stopped giving a damn about the money these entertainers make, they can afford to lose some cash

"Uh I'm going to vaguely imply that torrenting is bad but not explicitly state it because I'd personally be a massive hypocrite and most of us realize how ubiquitous it is in society but you should still feel problematic about it and here's some ambiguously toned music while I explain how it works."

"The real reason is you're stealing things." Yeah bro! I "steal" Linux iso files all the time. Why are you assuming the we use it for stealing? Like you said it's a fast and robust system. I would add sensible as well but as we see with every kind of technology it can be used for good and for evil.

I HATE when someone associates a technology with a "crime".. just because torrenting can be used to download illegally doesn't meant torrenting IS for downloading illegally. It's like saying knives are for killing people just because people get killed by knives.. Kodi for example is being damaged by this type of mindset, just because there are plugins that allow you to illegally stream content does not mean thats what kodi is for.. Ignorance at its finest.

My question is when the client says it is seeding a file where does it go? Why do I have to go to a tracker site if the client is distributing files? Why can't I find the files based on the client network?
@MacroPheliac

I wish you would've mentioned the added upsides of bittorrent, such as file integrity vs other protocols, as well it's DHT that allows for trackerlesa torrents, magnet links have nothing to do with that. You were also remiss to mention the legal uses for bittorrent, such as BT synch and free software. Nobody uses Bittorrent with anonymity in mind, unless you're using a VPN your public IP is completely exposed. We use it because it's better for large uncorrupt file downloads among thousands than virtually any other system without needing servers with assloads of bandwidth. Conventional P2P is slow and unreliable, everybody knows this.

You are NOT stealing things. You are making a copy. When you steel, the person you steel from does not have something anymore. When you download a copy, you both have the same thing. There is also some nice science behind this: www.monash.edu/news/show/the-science-behind-piracy
