Blizzard uses torrent technology. It's not just for illegal activity.
@cwestpha8 жыл бұрын
+Robert Gowdey Well almost every MMO now uses some kind of torrenting technology to keep costs low and increase patching speeds for their updates. Hell, even Windows 10 now has a Peer to Peer updates feature that works a bit like BitTorrent. Then there is the open source movement that uses BitTorrent to help with quickly pushing out new ISO releases to switchers. Nothing about the technology is illegal, its just the most common use is because it's so robust and distributed... and those two features are seeing it gain acceptance in other spaces. They just often don't advertise its Bittorent or call it something else (i.e. Steam).

rips found via torrent are so much more high quality than streaming, it baffles me
@Living_Dead_Girrl28 күн бұрын
What makes this even more baffling is that most are ripped from a streaming service - and stream in much higher quality with zero lag on your network. The issue appears to be their lack of video caching on streaming devices, which perhaps is to “prevent” downloading (fails anyways because they cheap out on updating video encoders that’ve had gaping security holes for up to a decade), requiring you to use tons of data loading and reloading the same content, and the file itself is heavily compressed causing massive loss in quality, just so it can buffer quickly. When playing a cached video, there’s zero lag in the controls. Pretty sure streaming services that enable “downloading for offline viewing,” are simply downloading an encrypted cached file to your system. They’re stifling technological progress… and wasting our data.

Valve told a while ago, the reason why people go to pirates is because the original distributor does a bad job of making the offer seem worth it. The example they used was Russia. Back then, when a new game released, Russian fans would have to wait at least a month, pay a large price, when compered with what they earned. At the same time, pirates would provide it on the same say of release, for free. Most pf the times pirates did a much better job at brining the game to the players. When valve started to sell its games in Russia, they released them on the same date as everywhere, with a pricing policy that lowered prices for Russia.

Everything fine until "... real reason is you're stealing things". First of all, you described peer-to-peer transmission, that's not necessarily torrent transmission. Many servers use exactly this concept to balance traffic and diverge content (it actually was the idea behind Tim Berners-Lee's drafts of the early World Wide Web), the first "implementation" of the WWW, USENET used this concept; many downloaders and installers use this very same mechanism to leverage traffic to users (Blizzard's WoW and Starcraft 2 downloaders come to mind, but I'm sure there're many others), Google used to use a similar concept inside its offices (pretty sure they still use it), many decentralized networks at local and wide local levels work like this (as I said before, the first idea behind the WWW worked like this), SMTP email uses a P2P layer as well, Tor works at some level with P2P in mind. Have you ever heard of the SETI@Home project? BOINC? IBM's World Community Grid? Torrents are a very small piece on the great scheme of peer to peer communications. Stealing things is even smaller. I always ALWAYS use bittorrent options to download open source software and most open source enthusiasts I know do it as well. Also, "stealing" may be technically right but... it doesn't really feel like stealing when most movie studios would bring to court anyone and everyone who "steals" a single copy of a film for which they earned billions and they released it when, where and how they wanted. Like... a TV series a month after premiere on its original country... and dubbed? Try harder.

You start sending data to other users immediately once downloaded the very first chunk, so even servers aren't actually needed, while user have all the chunks and keep share them.

QUESTION I STILL CANNOT FIND AN ANSWER FOR: is it considered torrenting when you watch movies online for free but you don't actually *download* anything? for example, you simply type in "watch (insert movie name) online free," then you find a website with it and you watch it without making any download. thanks in advance! :)
