This is what everyone wants. Immigrants of the past really wanted to come here and work hard and earn a living. They came to be an AMERICAN. WHY cant all immigration points along the border have this process?

From Hassan Kamel Al-Sabbah, a Lebanese-born American serial inventor, to Ahmed Zewail, the 1999 Nobel laureate in chemistry, to Farouk El-Baz, a NASA and MIT scientist who helped plan the Apollo landing, to Elias A. Zerhouni, the 15th director of the National Institutes of Health, Arab immigrants have made major contributions to American science and technology. As the Trump administration attempts to limit immigration from several Arab states, these contributions deserve extra attention. The problem is that to date there has been little work to document the extent of Arab contributions to American innovation. We recently set out to remedy that, and our analysis suggests that Arab inventors play a major role in U.S. innovation. They also contribute significantly to the success of major U.S. tech companies. To shed more light on Arab contributions to the U.S. innovation system, we ran an exercise matching Arabic first names with international patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). This data includes patents by people residing in the U.S. and around the world. Our approach has been used before, in a study of ethnic innovation in the U.S. as well as in a study of female inventors. There are obvious shortcomings to this approach. For instance, many non-Arab Muslims have Arabic first names, such as Mohammad, Ali, or Omar, while some Arabs have non-Arabic names. We tried to mitigate this problem by excluding non-Arab variations of Arabic names that are common for non-Arab Muslims. Another shortcoming is that we were not able to discern whether someone was born in the U.S., though we could tell whether they have patented in the U.S. Despite these limitations, we believe this analysis is valuable, and an improvement on our limited existing knowledge. Moreover, the immigration policies put forward by the Trump administration do not readily distinguish between Muslim and Arab identities - both appear to be targeted. So our analysis remains relevant, even to the extent that it fails to perfectly distinguish between the two groups. Having acknowledged the ambiguity built into our methods, we will refer to “Arab inventors” throughout this article. It turns out that the U.S. is a major home for Arab inventors. In the five-year period from 2009 to 2013, there were 8,786 U.S. patent applications in our data set that had at least one Arab inventor. Of the total U.S. patent applications, 3.4% had at least one Arab inventor, despite the fact that Arab inventors represent only 0.3% of the total population. As patents usually have multiple inventors, and Arab inventors often patent jointly with non-Arabs, 2,962 patents, or 1.2%, can be contributed exclusively to Arab inventors. California alone, with 1134 patents, had more patent filings by Arab inventors than any country outside the U.S. It serves as a home for more than one-third of PCT patent applications from Arab inventors in the U.S., and about 16% of all Arab patents worldwide.

I am a 3rd generation american. my great great grandparents came over from Ireland, Belgium and Austria. THey were all hard workers, some started businesses, my grandfather invented the unahub for plumbing that was used on George Washington Bridge. They were not looking for handouts or benefits. They wanted a chance to prove themselves and create a wonderful life for themselves. They did come thru Ellis Island and settled across the river in NJ.

I remember all the tests (blood tests, x-rays, vaccines, a doctor’s check-up, etc.) that my youngest son and I had to fulfill as immigrants, even though my husband and I were already married (He is American). That was to obtain the visa before the permanent residence. Later, I studied a lot to pass the citizenship tests, hired a lawyer, filled out a lot of documents, and provided a lot of records (FBI background check, etc.). The USA is my second home, and I love it. It is sad to see what is going on at the Southern border. It is despicable! I hope the situation gets better. ❤️🇺🇸

Pizza is Italian, hotdogs and burgers are German... So how exactly do you define "American"? That's the million dollar question, because last time I checked my history textbooks, this land always belonged to Native Americans until the English colonized it... Should we deport everyone who isn't Native American? Out of respect, we should consult them, since they are *only* natives and germane citizens in this land.

Back then there was no welfare state. And Immigrants were chosen on how they could contribute and serve the American people. The Italians are model immigrants who learned the language, assimilated and contributed richly to the USA. Not like the 1965 third worlders who live of welfare, bring in their peasant cultures, refuse to learn the language, burn the American flag while shouting "Viva Mejico" and burden the white working class while serving as voting bloc for the Democrat Party. You can look to California,Florida and Detroit what Demographic changes create. What's worse is the fact that Western Europeans stupidly adopted the same policies and now are suffering with us.

What you have to remember is America was not a welfare state until 1935 so immigrates where not coming to America for free stuff but where coming here for the best opportunity for a better life. Until 1935 the world sent it's very best to America, the people with the vision, drive and termination of it's country's finest. America is great because the world sent it's greatest people here. America maybe just one country but it represents the best of all countries.

Now! in this new parallel universe, everything seems to be backwards, these past 8 yrs has done us more harm than people can imagine. Thank God for President Trump.🇺🇸

Forginers then and now are completely different.. Now this taking ppl cause they scream Talban gonna get me running noone chasing them. Insults real refugees as like the Holocaust meaning These ppl were gonna die genocide , and the real Forginers who came for a better life by working not being taken care of but building to America verse Humm thus land looks good I want it..but never ever will built it..locust.. Usa is changing the political scene totally changed what coming to 🇺🇸 means .. Shameful Forginers now want all the goodies of usa but want their ways to be usa take over scoot right in have no clue what ansestors did to make this country get but take it with out their ansestors sacrifice. I bet if usa ppl went to their countries and we tried to make their country like usa they won't have it or stand for it...

There should be a cap on how many people we can receive each year. This country is already overpopulated! It seems to be bringing down our standard of living. Americans can't find jobs Americans can't feed their families. Americans can't find decent housing. Our ancestors were willing to assimilate! America can't fix everyone's problem in the world it's time for us to fix ourselves. I think if you immigrate to America you need to be an asset not a hindrance. Have you ever heard of staying in your own country and fighting for your rights? Make change in your country not ours!
