I am a Black American who has lived in four other countries and visited a considerable number more. I would say on average, the United States is more organized, efficient and does in fact have more freedoms and economic opportunities than many places in the world. Despite many perceptions, I would even say on average it is even more generally accepting of diversity than many places in the world, despite the challenges of racism, sexism, religious discrimination, etc. that remain issues in the country. There is a lot of great things about the United States and I will never talk like it is a terrible place to live or has nothing for anyone. Like everywhere in the world, there are pros and cons. However I do find myself preferring many other countries on a general social level and general love of life level. To make US dollars in a country outside of the US is often a dream life for those who have traveled a lot abroad. In my experience, many foreigners who have never traveled to the United States, especially those in developing countries, tend to adopt a romanticized view of the States. I have many friends from other countries and I often notice that even their relatives in their home countries constantly ask them for money assuming they are living a massively prosperous life in the US even if they are told the opposite by that person and they assume if the person isn’t sending them money, it is because they are being greedy or stingy, not because the person is struggling to make it themselves. Although no one ever said life would be easy in the United States, many people still adopt the notion that everyone in the United States has not just a job, but a well paying job with plenty of free time for social settings and everyone owns a big house and a nice car. That just because the country itself is prosperous that everyone living within it must also be prosperous. Many people also forget that when the reputation of opportunity and economic prosperity was first garnered, the US population was much smaller than it is today and had more opportunities for immigrants of previous generations and more economic opportunities for upward mobility in general. The US population is enormous now and has grown by more than 70 million people in 30 years, literally one generation. I think that also creates more competition for well paying jobs, living space, etc. for such rapid growth in a relatively short amount of time. Sadly, not all jobs are well paying and we live in a capitalist society. On top of this, many jobs have disappeared through automation and technology, not to mention inflation the diminishes the value of the dollars that are earned. There are many factors. But agreed, the US is not an easy place to live. To be honest, I am not sure anywhere is.

As someone in there 20s here the in US, I can concur that the American dream isn't all that. I feel very disenchanted with expectation to just chase degrees and titles for my whole life, it sounds exhausting. I'm very grateful for my position in life but the US work culture isn't very healthy for many people and I can only imagine what it'd be like as an immigrant.

@@aliyousuf8697 The West is a scam. People in the West are working hard for their whole life to afford what we in developing countries already have. For example in my country Jamaica most people live in homes that are fully paid for and the property taxes are only $100 USD per year. In the USA you can never fully own your home because the property taxes are so high that if you pay off your mortgage you can still lose your home if you can't afford the high taxes.

This is 100% accurate. We are workaholics, in huge debt, and never have free time. We are lonely and depressed. We don't keep in close contact with family and friends because we are so busy working. We work 40hrs a week plus overtime and spend 2 hours commuting in traffic each day. We often have 2nd jobs, and our spouses work as well. Our children begin working at 16-18. This is primarily to afford our cars and student loans. Owning a car is mandatory and we are addicted to our cars. Public transportation is not practical except in New York City. We are rule followers. Read the signs. Obey traffic rules. Wait your turn. Do not cut in line! If you break rules, it is so offensive that you will be attacked verbally by any average citizen, and this can escalate to physical violence very quickly. We are obsessed with personal space and privacy. Please don't stand too close when speaking. Do not make physical contact unless you are invited (it's considered very intimate). If you approach a stranger in a public place, you will be greeted with suspicion. We guard our children with ferocity so do not approach them unless we know you. Also, please be aware of your eyes. Staring or making excessive eye contact is considered invasive. It is uncommon in the US to smoke now. Smoking indoors is against the law. If you smoke outdoors, others in the vicinity will be deeply offended by the smell. Tip your wait staff. Employers give them low or no wage because it is expected that customers give tips. We love our pets. If we are walking a dog, you may approach and pet the dog, speak to the dog, easier than approaching the person. This is a great way to make friends. The only other option to make friends is with your coworkers. We have the best food! She must be talking about fast food. Avoid fast food or you will get fat as she said. Also, be wary of our huge food portions. Americans love our versions of Mexican, Italian, Indian, Mediterranean, Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese restaurants. They are not authentic but they are quite good. Americans in many regions are very suspicious of foreign languages and cultures. Learning perfect English is crucial. If you have a foreign accent, you will be fine in areas where there are many others with the same accent. Big cities are more accepting of foreigners. But outside of those areas you will always be treated as an outsider. The same can be said with styles of dress. Americans are comfortable with conformity. Many Americans are open-minded but if you are foreign to them then you will have to overcome that first. The USA is huge and diverse, so what may be a useful generalization of people in one region may be the opposite of those in another.

I left my home country when I was only 20 to live the "American dream" I aways dreamed of living in the US. Today, 6 years later I'm here. Depressed. I have many things to be grateful for, this opportunity has changed me forever, but I rather consume less things, and collect more memories. The average American mindset is the rat race mindset, while there's nothing wrong with that. The way this dream is sold worldwide is like if it should be the one and only dream the entire world should strive for, when in reality this is not true. For everything we do there'll always be duality, the positive and negative. We just need to be honest with ourselves, be proud of everything we have done to accomplish our goals. But the most important: if your dream is to have a degree, get married, have kids, cars and a nice house to call yours, cool go for it! just dont push this dream or criticize others for not desiring the same dream. If your dream is also, living in a farm, collecting berries, helping others, cool! dont compare yourself to others collecting material stuff. Your dream is just as important as anyone else. When we die, we dont bring nothing of the material stuff with us. We only live once, and while this might sound cliche, it is the truth. This current system we live in, sucks. Everything is shaped in a way to have you always trapped, loans, debt and all that stuff. We need to be smart, play the game, save. Have discipline, but don't fall for the trap.

Very true what you have said, but I have also seen people who have overcome all that you have said. They work one job, they come to their native country like almost every year. They have built strong networks of their fellow countrymen. One thing Akot for sure better to be in a place where they are opportunities to work than be in a place where to get a job is not easy. I imagine one hustling all these years until you are in your 40's just because the system doesn't favour you, applying for jobs and another one is taken because you do not know anybody. That is why many people go there and work, because when you remember where you have come from, and others are wishing for that opportunity then you will be grateful. so long as you are investing that money..you can decide to work for five years and then return back to your country and invest more. Thank you again for highlighting those points.

I am a Black American, and it’s very interesting to hear how people from other countries perceive America. I have a good life here, but in order to have a good quality of life, you have to know how to hustle and you have to know how to choose where to live. And if you want a relatively peaceful life, you have to be able to AFFORD it. That is hard to do in this country. If you have a decent career that is in high demand here, you could make it. But I feel like everyday I am ducking a dodging from the next school shooting or crazy political situation here. I applaud people who uproot their entire lives to move to a new country…especially to somewhere like America. It’s difficult, but not impossible. I’ve lived in Bermuda as a little girl, so I had some experience outside of the States. I miss Bermuda sooo much! But while the Island life IS paradise, it has its disadvantages as well. At the end of the day, no place is perfect, but you just have to figure out which country is the right fit for YOU.❤

My entire family has been waiting to migrate to the US under family preference visa category for 16 years. Many plans were changed, dreams given up, money wasted just to get visa and still we have to wait 2-3 years. I always try to explain my parents that we’re good in our homeland and It’s not that there are gold treasures hidden in the US and all we do is just dig earth, collect it and become rich. We need to struggle 3x than we do here. Also, when you have elderly members and aging parents, they need to be ensured regular healthcare but in the US, let’s not talk about medical costs. So yeah, trying to keep firm on my own beliefs and thinking to get degree from the US, work somewhere else and live minimally. Luxury is not a parameter to bring happiness in life. Anyone who goes to America will face difficulty at first, however as time lapses you get skills and you face the bills and life becomes good. If you go to New York city don't rent house in Manhattan it will be so expensive for immigrants just rent in Brooklyn or queens it's affordable. As time lapses and you got experience then you shift. Kindly advice them as with time not just you come today and tomorrow you become rich it takes time and you learn

100% true...In America you need a mental shift and physical adaptability- or resilience (easily said than done). For most Americans this is the life they know, so it's easier for them, but for the rest of us we must keep learning the new way of life, while making ends meet, and managing our emotional needs. To get to America, you've already made tremendous sacrifices, which makes going back home not an option. Always remember why you came here and focus on that. It's a great country for all those who can adapt. I'd rather work, and work to provide for my family than live idle and broke. I'd advise all of you to make saving/investing necessary so you can catch a break in your old age. Cheers!

Yes, America is all we know. I think of the possibility of moving to other countries all of the time, but I just don't think I could handle it, due to all of the privileges I get here in America. I'm spoiled, and don't know if I could truly live anywhere else, because of all that I have here. But who knows? 🤷🏽‍♀ Perhaps I could find a country that would give me a decent life that I would enjoy. The jury's still out on that one. lol

I was always petrified about running off to foriegn country. Will I make friends? Will I get a job? Will I get medical support? How hard will I have to work? I hate slaving away just for another man's legacy. I love my free time where I can rest and do stuff I love that make my life worth living. Earninhg all the money in the world and not being able to enjoy your life until you are old make absolutely no sense to me. And with so many unemployed people in america; the workload could be shared. I just feel that America is a cold place. And it lacks love. I see children taking there parents legacy and sending them to home for old people. And the system allows that.

100% this! This is something I would tell everyone about how our lives should not require so much work just to be able to get basic necessities. Housing is not considered a human right here. Everything is for profit and when basic necessities are for profit people will lose out on those things. And yes the loneliness is real! In part that’s because of the capitalist work system where everyone is everyone’s competition or at least that’s how we are taught to see others. Also the hyper individualistic culture makes people not want to help their fellow humans and they think that’s normal. On top of all that people here genuinely believe this is how should be…so yeah it’s definitely easy to get depressed. I know I struggle with that. Thanks for making this honest video!

With good information, you will get it right... I know people who have stayed in the UK, Canada and now in the US, majority will till you the US is far better than those other countries. As today most will tell you they own their own houses and cars already. So in as much as we make negative videos there should positive videos too of those thriving and not just negativity, if it's that bad, why don't you go back to your home country and do something different there that won't make you feel bad about America. The thing that scares me the most about America is how easily accessible guns are 😢like what we see making the news, someone just deciding to go ands shoot 🔫 at kids in a school. 😮 But i also think all countries have their highs and lows. I just love my country South Africa and i dont see myself liv8ng anywhere else. Stay strong sister, build yourself a home in your home country while living there and furniture it then come back and live amongst your relatives. Its good to know you can just up and go and see your cousin.

Yeah, it's crazy he he but it also depends on where you live. However, its true, shooting can happen anytime but there's lots of opportunities. I left my country because I was hungry and couldn't make ends meet lol

The reason America is like this is because it’s the fittest and best from all over the world competing against each other here. Even the people who came as refugees are some of the best their country has to offer-Do you see what many go through just to get here? No wonder they work so hard here. It’s a competition of the brightest people from all over world, including you who posted this video. It is bound to be arduous, lonesome and tiring. You will succeed in America. Take care of yourself.

Thanks so much for sharing, I consider myself very lucky living in Switzerland and the decisions I took after being here for over 25 years. I made a conscious decision to minimize my lifestyle, this was after working just to pay the bills for things I did not need. So now I work 16 hours a week (YES 16 HOURS A WEEK)I don`t buy because a friend bought,I don`t do because friends are doing, I budget tightly and live on minimum wage but I do not miss out. This was after accepting that I`d drop dead if I kept going at the rate I was, working 45 hours a week just to survive. For the first time since I arrived in Europe, I'm happy living on minimum wage because im alive and living, when I was making more money than my whole village folks could use in a month,I was walking asleep. I really appreciate your honesty and stating facts that many people in the diaspora choose to hide, and have subscribed

My friend's son "made it" here in the US, he was born here. He worked in the financial district. He never saw his wife or children, commuted 2 hours one way so he could live in a big house with servants. He was 52 when he dropped dead walking by his pool of a heart attack. Not worth it!

What you are saying is absolutely true as a black woman born and raised in the USA. It is horrible. The government really doesn’t care and you just work. It’s so bad where other people have to raise your children because you do not have the time. There is no work life balance only work. Everything goes up and they only pay you enough to pay your bills. You have nothing left. We have bad food etc… I have decided to move to a different country because after 37 years the USA is not for me I want a piece of mind. Thanks for sharing your experience Queen.
