I saw bro play at a high school showcase his senior year. Hes actually good. The issue is his height, and the fact he never learned how to play with 4 other dudes on the court. Every time he got the ball he ducked his head and tried to play Hero ball. He cannot move without the ball. When his teammates had the ball he would spread out he’d follow them around so they’d have to pass it back to him. He just never learned how to play with fundamentals. But. He’s got serious skills.

@natesamadhi336 ай бұрын
..So he's *not* actually good. You said yourself he never learned fundamentals. If someone doesn't even have **fundamentals** down, then by definition, they are not good. Basketball is a team sport; you being able to dribble really fast doesn't mean you play good with a team in an actual team game. His loss at IMG Academy was more than enough proof that he's actually terrible (look up the game on here). He needs to put the ball down & go do gymnastics or something.
@elrondes16 ай бұрын
But what is he actually good at? Dribbling 20 times in place as he struggles to get by his defender? I've yet to see him beat his man 1 on 1 against actually good defenders, usually just winds up chucking up an airball. Yes his height is a problem, but there are short players with 100x the skill level as him.

I mean he’s the perfect scapegoat on why fans are bellyaching and there’s no new phenom there to excite them again. And what I mean in terms of why, for one, how a basketball player on scholarship is in school like it has absolutely nothing to do with education. Isn’t that a good enough reason to have fans rolling their eyes? And Duke is becoming a joke as a reputable elite academic institution when they are basically wearing a sign that they don’t care about basketball recruits if when it comes to meeting their picky application acceptance standards. People will begin to lose faith in the prestige of how actually smart the rest of the student population is if they are taking in the sort that aren’t even on the level of a 4th grader. Ok, that’s not nice how it sounds, but it’s a swept under the rug oversight that people are just uncomfortable or not informed enough to be brave enough to talk about.

In 4th grade, my son began playing basketball. Despite being a terrible coach, one thing he said remains true today... Don’t worry about the kid beside you, just put in the effort and work hard. Regardless of the kid’s current skill level, things will change once everyone catches up. I share his perspective. When my son started playing high-level AAU, he showed promise and started occasionally. However, in high school, he excelled and became the top scorer for his school, a record that might still be unbroken today. They’ve been to district four times and come out on top twice. At State, they came in second. The harmful effects outweigh the benefits when kids are labeled as phenoms. Among all the kids he played with and against, three of them reached the NBA, although they were simply playing basketball. I wished LeBron took his own advise and let the kid just play.

If you ever watched the mighty ducks franchise in the 90’s, in the first two movies the ducks were never the most talented team, but they gained notoriety and succeed through gimmicks. However in the third movie where they became teenagers, the gimmicky play that they were known for was no longer effective and they had to learn how to play real hockey. Julian’s game never evolved past the gimmicky style of basketball ball that got him noticed when he was a kid and the nepotism created by his father made him uncoachable.

When it comes to basketball, “Height” really doesn’t have that much to do with how you play the game. Take Muggsy Bogues for instance. Well, Muggsy Bogues stood 5”3, and he played in the NBA for 14 seasons when the league was extremely physical. And the reason why Muggsy was able to play that long in a physical era against some of the greatest basketball athletes in the world at that time is because he was a TRUE POINT GUARD! Muggsy had speed, quickness, ball handling, court vision, top level conditioning, a great passer, a floor general, leadership skills, a good teammate, high level basketball IQ, was an excellent defensive player, could start the break, finish and knew how to get his teammates involved to make shots… Julian Newman is the complete opposite of that! Julian’s mindset is on “SCORING” and being a showman more then becoming a true point guard, and that’s what holds him back. If he had basic point guard fundamentals, and develop his basketball IQ into being a real point guard, then we would probably see him playing Pro. And yes, maybe the streetball route or sports entertainment like the Harlem Globetrotters may be a good option for him.

Dyckman basketball game is a good example. Few years ago, a group of Chinese street baller played formal game there. One of the player who scored a lot enter the CBA but he is still struggling now. Therefore, no need to expect too much about Newman as he is not even as good as other Chinese street ballers. Also, I agree one of the points in the video:dribble. He really dribbles for dribble. He dribbles with no purpose. You can see CP3, Curry, Irving or any guard, they play for fake, pass, crossover within the plan. But Newman really played for nothing.

You nailed it… Players can get by in spite of their deficiencies, at least in high school/Jr. college (especially when your dad is your coach lol), but the game is drastically different in D1 and even more so in the NBA. Upper echelon programs are, down to the last, team centric and highly structured, two things ol’ Julie has displayed a strong aversion towards. If that isn’t enough, he’s ridiculously undersized (even for his mid-market high school team), his basketball IQ begins with a zero and a decimal point, he is woefully lacking in maturity and unable to realistically evaluate his ability/potential. It’s extremely difficult to get a player to improve on their weaknesses when they refuse to acknowledge that they have any… I am not trying to bash the kid or be an asshole, I am just sharing my opinion like I would if I were asked for an abbreviated scouting report on Julie.

He was great at his size and stature. That's it. The thing was he stopped growing when others were experiencing growth spurts. Hence, his speed and physicality were capped out as other defenders are simply longer striders and longer defenders which is harder to be out-dribbled by Newman. Needless to say, pro-level players would outperform him at a better efficiency. As for his deficiencies, they were not developed due to the fact that he played varsity at too young of an age. By constantly playing against older and bigger guys, he was not afforded the opportunity to learn how to play effective defense as he would always be out-muscled. Passing development would also be hindered as his defenders often towered above him, blocking his vision adding on the woes that Newman was not physically stronger and would have difficulty making long and strong passes. Finishing at the rim is also not feasible for the same reasons, hence not developing it too much. As such, he can only work on the only skillset that would keep him on the varsity court, which is speed and long range shooting.

Then we saw how with what film we see him rather failing at bada$$ery like if he had hit a baseball home Run and just looked at what he just did as though he’s thinking “Yeah, goddam right I’m good”. Weird to make this video 4 years after he’s fizzled out. Let the kid live.

I mean he is fast but his dribble is the same everytime at the end of the day do the same movement to go to the ring , i see why he got blocked so easily on those videos.

I used to really think this kid was the best but I now realize that all he doing is ballhawking , shooting highly contested 3 pointers , and doing dribble moves that create no separation at all so he tries to run around his opponents making it seem like he has so much speed but he so small he doesn’t go anywhere

I feel like he could’ve had a better chance at something at least, if his dad didn’t just let him do whatever the fuck he wanted on the court.

He's a 5ft 7 player with a shoot first mentality. Who loses to KZbinrs.

He’s got some offense but have no defense whatsoever. He’s really an average player with more highlights than most who’ve come up playing the game. If he’d just work on other aspects of his game and less on the limelight and his attitude, he may have had somewhat of a chance.

Feel bad for the guy, his father wasted all his athletic skills on a sport he was never gonna go pro at because of his height.
@joelman19897 ай бұрын
I don’t think he was ever even trying to get to the NBA. At least his father wasn’t. It was always about internet vitality. if he lets go of the ego and take KZbin seriously he has a career.

I have to thank you for this video. I am 5,8 foot from Australia. Never been to a basketball match. Always wondered what I would look like and now I know. She looks like a little kid and I am only 1 inch taller. Crazy, I knew I would look small but this helped put things into perspective

When you have talent but you’re short, have a terrible attitude, live like you’re entitled, and don’t improve your skills, you rarely, if ever, make it to the NBA.

He was never a genius. He's the product of a father who doesn't understand how basketball is played and trained his son in some broken form of basketball. All he know how to do is do dribble drills, which I'm sure his father thinks is the height of playmaking. His shot never changed even though its aparent the release is too low and too slow for someone of his size. Basically, Julian was gassed up and let down by his father. If we all trained the way his father made him train, yeah we would all be high-school "prodigies".

Even if the dude was 6'7, he doesn't have the right attitude. I'm not sure that his basketball IQ is up to par either. Like it said in the video, he does all this fancy dribbling and doesn't accomplish anything from it. He has no idea how to create space and he doesn't know what that even means
