My father witnessed the playbook unfold in Nazi Germany in the 1920's and 1930's. He heard Hitler rant in person in 1933. My grandfather was a diehard German patriot, was shot for opposing Hitler. My father fled, joined British Army, and helped liberate Germany from the Nazis. He warned me it could happen here. I held back a nervous chuckle. He explained how it could happen. I explained how it couldn't. Sigh. ["Chuckled"? To clarify...After WW2 my father settled in New York. I was born and raised in Brooklyn, where I grew up with immigrants from around the world, including survivors of the Holocaust, Russian atrocities, and other authoritarian governments. The victories of WW2 were still palpable, as vets and homefront families were everywhere. We had defeated dictators and were in a "cold" war with our #1 enemy, Russia. America wasn't polarized like now, full of distrust, extreme partisanship; Southerners still had Confederate grudges, but for the most part, we were all bound as Americans. Love of Democracy, hatred of dictators, and strength of our Democratic institutions made the idea of a "dictator of America" sound insane. And so it is now. [This started in the 80's. I studied our Constitution, Democracy, and government institutions in school. I remember feeling the blood drain from my face when I heard Reagan tell the nation that "government is the problem". His reason for saying that was extremely dishonest, incredibly manipulative, and severely damaging to American Democracy, American fiscal policies, American society, and ordinary Americans. In fact it made many more problems. He was a slick salesman for the wealthiest Americans and biggest corporations. Trump is the sickest.]

I talked to several older West Germans in the years 1961 through 1963 and your description of how dictators take power exactly describes how Hitler came to power. Trump's model is exactly the same. The German people told me they even thought Hitler was a joke in many ways at first. But when he got a little power, he took all power and freedoms. They said they worked at the concentration camp. In my stupidity I asked "Why?" The other half were anyone who didn't to what the dictator wanted and a large number of those were German people themselves. Many of them had helped get Hitler in power. Hitler also made friends with a lot of the fascist oligarchs, just like Trump has done with dark monies in his campaigns and being promoted by huge media such as Murdoch's Fox and Sinclair to name a few. Between 3 and 5 people determine 80% of what we see and hear. Trump has already put in many of his own judges. Our heads of Homeland Security were out of the country when January the 6 th occurred and all department phones had been washed out to leave no evidence. Trump's Attorney General Bill Barr white washed many insurrectionists doings. Biden left Trump's FBI head, Whay (sp), as head of the FBI. Trump immediately started calling Whay corrupt and a traitor. At least fifty former Trump officials and high backers have warned us. Disaster is imminent in America.

Though many aspects of what we today call "fascism" is actually American in origin during the civil war and the westward expansion. Fascism in Germany is in many ways an import from the US which was then modified to fit Germany. Hitler actually greatly idolized the US and his idea of "Lebensraum" actually was directly inspired by the westward expansion of the US with him seeing the Slavs the same way as native Americans and him seeing the jews the same as blacks. America came very close to fascism with the "America First" party (yeah, Trump didn't come up with that) almost committing a coup in 1934 though it failed though it's threat was actually a critical part for Roosevelt to get his "New Deal" approved.

Most of the justices on the Supreme Court were appointed by presidents who LOST the popular vote. Our arcane "Electoral College," gives outsized power to smaller, predominantly former slave-holding states, so that often it is the losing candidate who becomes president.

A big thing that Reich isn't talking about though is just how much of European fascism actually has it's origins in the US. Hitler was trying to copy the US with it's oppression of minorities and it's taking over of native land. It's important to keep in mind that the Holocaust didn't start until late 1943 when the Nazi regime was collapsing and spiralling out of control. The Nazi's actually viewed the Jews very much like their version of blacks as sub-human people to work in plantations.

It sure is. "Project 2025" was drafted by the Heritage Foundation, which is a right-wing neofascist think tank. Also, the Project has been vetted by scores of mega-corporations, who would love to implement this program to fatten their bottom line. In other words, the Project isn't just for Trump --- Heritage (and all its corporate affiliates) will try to impose this agenda with the help of ANY Republican who might enter the White House in the future. But it'll be especially dangerous under a Trump dictatorship.

The rest of the planet has been watching this unfold for over 20 years, but when the population has been constantly told that they are "exceptional" because of that piece of earth that they were born on and your the greatest country the world has ever known, as human beings the blinders go up and the earplugs are put in place so we lose the prospective of the bigger picture and the lessons of history. In the '60s working at a resort hotel a wealthy well-educated Jewish lady and I became friends. She had a tattoo on her arm I asked her why she didn't leave when she saw Hitler rising. She replied that her family had lived there for generations she knew her friends she thought it was just a passing thing and by the time she realized it wasn't it was too late. She said to me if you feel it if you see it because it can happen in America make sure you flee before it's too late. I have a nice house in South America I saw it I felt it in 2016 and I left America.
