One doesn't have to be a "rocket scientist" to realize that whatever the US is importing from China/Mexico/Canada, is because US NEEDS those imports and BENEFITS from them. It is not that US imports goods from China/Mexico/Canada just to please them. After years of hostile relations and countless economic sanctions, US is STILL IMPORTING goods from China because China is either a sole supplier for those goods or because China is supplying those goods at much better price than competition. Therefore, sanctioning those imports or surtaxing them will primarily hurt US economy, not the Chinese. But this same logic applies to ALL imports into the US! Tariffs only work when there is a cutting edge competition between domestic and foreign producers and then, a tariff on imported goods will give domestic producers an advantage over the foreign producers and encourage them to grow further. In the absence of such tight competition between domestic and foreign producers, any tariffs on imported goods will primarily hurt the tariff imposing country. And this is not "rocket science," but basic economics.

In 1929 and the early 1930s, a trade war escalated during the Great Depression, fueled by the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act of 1930 in the United States. This act imposed high tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods to protect domestic industries but triggered retaliatory tariffs from other countries like Canada, France, and Germany. The result was a collapse in global trade, with U.S. exports falling by 61% and international trade shrinking by 66% between 1929 and 1934. This deepened the economic crisis worldwide, increased unemployment, and strained international relations, contributing to the political instability that preceded World War II. The event serves as a cautionary tale about the dangers of protectionism during economic crises.

These tariff reductions are the first U.S.-EU negotiated reductions in duties in more than two decades. Under the agreement, the EU will eliminate tariffs on imports of U.S. live and frozen lobster products. U.S. exports of these products to the EU were over $111 million in 2017. The EU will eliminate these tariffs on a Most Favored Nation (MFN) basis, retroactive to begin August 1, 2020. The EU tariffs will be eliminated for a period of five years and the European Commission will promptly initiate procedures aimed at making the tariff changes permanent. The United States will reduce by 50% its tariff rates on certain products exported by the EU worth an average annual trade value of $160 million, including certain prepared meals, certain crystal glassware, surface preparations, propellant powders, cigarette lighters and lighter parts. The U.S. tariff reductions will also be made on an MFN basis and retroactive to begin August 1, 2020. “As part of improving EU-US relations, this mutually beneficial agreement will bring positive results to the economies of both the United States and the European Union. We intend for this package of tariff reductions to mark just the beginning of a process that will lead to additional agreements that create more free, fair, and reciprocal transatlantic trade”

The professor is right: this is more about instituting a consumption tax to cut income tax for the wealthy. The right has long talked about a national sales tax to eliminate income tax, but a national sale tax is politically impossible, but tariffs are.
@franceyneireland16336 күн бұрын
Trump promised tax cuts for the wealthy, Trump believes he can make up the tax loses by tariffs. The US companies importing will have to pay the tariffs, those importers will pass the costs of the tariffs on to the consumers. Which results in the US consumers will be paying for the tax cuts to the wealthy Americans.

The EU already has a 15% to 20% tax (hidden tariff) on American products and services. Canada taxes American products. The taxes include the Goods and Services Tax (GST), Provincial Sales Tax (PST), and Harmonized Sales Tax (HST). Canadian tariff-rate quotas (TRQs) remain in place on American dairy and poultry. Mexico has increased tariffs on certain goods, including those imported from the USA. A real journalist would have researched this.

Obviously badly, but everyone has had time to prepare for this. If the EU, Mexico and Canada haven't made plans to trade more between ourselves that's on us.

True, but easier said than done. No point (say) buying car parts from Germany when what your industry needs are (say) machine parts from the US. Industry would need a long time to adapt to this and seems everyone was waiting to see if Trump would really do it (I mean, understandably, he says a lot of stuff and difficult to know what’s bluster).
