As an American, sometimes I wonder if I'm getting an accurate picture of English people from UK media.... Or if they have an accurate picture of us. Do they not teach in schools how we solved the problem of integrating regional laws and customs with the federal government. England couldn't do it, they would either go toward feudalism or extreme centralization. That's the real check and balance is the county sheriff and the state officials and the federal executive being forced to work together to produce tangible results in a way the collateral branches of government don't always have to. I'm sure the UK has a system like that now, or maybe even a better variant because it's easier to pull off when you have much less territory, but it comes from us. Did they teach you that the reason we were worried about Canada for a while was because England would have set it up as a proxy rival to the US, if they had a chance; and that this was their prevailing motive in choosing war instead of diplomacy: to reduce the strength of the colonies and pave the way for a rival nation? And that "the King's folly" is just a way for governments to do things underhand that seem illogical? Or are we wrong in that we don't understand how much hold a king had on people because our country has always been a democracy? There are so many things to think about in this world. I may be a moron without a college degree in Middle America, but even I have a lot of thoughts. The results of this election make me feel like we've earned a place at the cultural table. Everyone wants things for themselves but even more than that everyone wants to feel valued.
