Trump has turned press conferences into a ritual of hate -- is it still worth watching?

The White House press conference has always been a frustrating spectacle, with reporters trying to pry information from government officials who do everything in their power to avoid sharing too much information. But these press conferences are typically appreciated because of their symbolic value -- they reaffirm the democratic idea that the government must answer to the people.
That symbolic value has changed under Trump, who uses press conferences to stage high profile fights with the press and mobilize his base.
On Strikethrough, Vox producer Carlos Maza explores the challenges facing the news media in the age of Trump. Follow Carlos on Facebook for more: / carlosmazavox

The fact that we consider anyone “winning” or losing a press conference or any political argument shows we have become too partisan and the largest percentage of that responsibility falls on the media. There is little to no difference between political coverage and the coverage of a sporting event these days. The only big difference is sports fan are less hostile to one another...sadly.
@thissucksallover
@thissucksallover 5 жыл бұрын
You had me until you started playing the blame game. The responsibility falls to the culture, and by that I mean the media, the politicians, and a general public that responds to this sort of 'Who's the winner? Who's the loser?' binary thinking. Gotta win every given moment!
@tbz1551
@tbz1551 5 жыл бұрын
thissucksallover fair points...that being said, there is a very clear correlation between the advent of 24 hrs news media and the current political atmosphere. Polarized and siloed view points constantly getting their confirmation bias. IMO this lays mostly at the feet of the news media for playing to our partisan nature. One could argue these always existed and it is simply technology that allows for quicker access to this confirmation bias. Regardless the media plays a significant role imo.

@@Mypromiselive Something had to foster that culture though. Media outlets know that they make the most money when they present these issues as an "us vs. them" dichotomy. The more people see this sort of coverage regularly, the more this culture grows. Obviously media is simply capitalizing on an inherent trait in human nature (tribalism) that likes to see things presented this way, but only one of these things can change substantially enough--and quickly enough--to make a difference: the media. Human psychology isn't something we can just decide to reform, humans are always going to think this way; humans suddenly shifting away from tribalist instincts would be a major evolutionary step in the human psyche, and that's not something that's going to happen any time soon. The thing we CAN change is the way we present these issues, and that falls directly on the media. Capitalizing on humanity's proclivity toward ingroup and outgroup mechanics has tossed rocket fuel on this already incendiary human trait. Constantly catering to it has given it a platform and power. Sure, the issue has existed since the dawn of humankind, but the rise of inflammatory and highly partisan media outlets has given that instinct the power to throw our entire governmental process into the meltdown we see today. Even if the solution here is to stop paying so much attention to media or to take all of it with a grain of salt, the root of the problem still lies with the media's exploitation of the tribal nature of the human psyche. And the media are the only people who have the power to make these changes, because they're the ones who are making the decisions to present information in this format in the first lace.

As I am from Germany I might be able to give different perspective on this. The press conferences are organized quite different in Germany. First it is organized as an association composed of different news outlets and they decide who they invite to question, they decide what to put on the agenda and who should ask the next question. Usually there is not only the main press secretary but press secretaries from different ministries to answer specific questions. It is also no uncommon for the invited to hand out written statements. They are quite lengthy as well. Usually about 45 min to an hour. Regarding cameras it is not common to show the journalists. This takes away a lot of the drama. On the downside they are really boring and not many people like to watch them.

The current president's press conferences are an embarrassment. They should stop allowing them to be filmed because Trump just likes to play to the cameras. If he feels like he can 'win' a conversation by either shutting the other person down with insults or just flat out refusing to answer them, then that's what he'll do. He's not trying to inform, he's trying to entertain or assert his dominance. It's SO weird.

What we need is complete and absolute truth regarding every last thing our government has done "in our name" from its inception up to today. And since the only people who can change it are the ones in power at the odds of flipping a coin, just... Won't happen... Unless... The people stand-up and force reps to listen to a 90% majority only with their power under threat making an open field better odds then keep the current system all assuming we survive this administration as a representative democracy... Nah. Wont happen..

Press that criticizes government is good press to follow. Obviously everyone is biased but you have to make up your own mind. Whether it's Fox news constantly bashing Obama or CNN constantly bashing Trump, that's the news you should focus on. The news will always try to "get" the president so take that info and decide if it's as bad as they're making it out to be. Cause if you listen to what Trump considers good news like Fox and don't listen to what he considers fake news like CNN, then you'd think his presidency was perfect. Fox rarely covers anything negative on him. If you're still on his side after negative coverage, then he's a good president for you.
@TheBlobik

@@alexs1640 A very reasonable stance. And if Fox does not call out some criticisms fake (or even mildly agrees on them) then you can be almost sure that the point in question is valid. Carlos, I’m glad for these videos that you make. They highlight not only what’s wrong with our current administration, but also the way that the media covers it. It reminds me that while a free media is a guardrail of democracy, we shouldn’t so blindly think of it as free of fault-it should also be criticized.

Well this vox video is completely misleading acting like these reporters are so innocent they're all liars they spread fake propaganda I'm probably the White House gets tired of them because it's nothing but accusations and fake narratives not tough questions it's funny that they would even put this up after the news just got caught two days ago making a complete fake news story up and didn't even have a retraction not to mention during the Obama administration all the questions were given to the reporters before they entered the White House

I likened Trump's rallies (of which I went to one) back in 2015 as chances for political supporters to act like wrestling fans. I have never been proven so right. The one thing you need to focus on is that fact for his supporters it's not about politics. For them it's about having fun. Being the ignorant people they are, they don't have the critical thinking skills to get off the ignorance train when Trump drives it straight to the stupid station. It's like cheering for the Undertaker. He's the bad guy you like to cheer for, because you are hoping he puts on a good show of his villainy, just so you can see the hero win in the end. Hell, I love the Undertaker...however I also realize what his character is supposed to represent. He is after all...THE UNDERTAKER.

The Goddamn Batman I’m a republican but I admire the European system. Instead raising taxes to only help certain people, why not give everyone the same basic services. This is why I support Trump because he was right, the working people were forgotten which is shown by the Obama admin, all his bills he passed were for poorer people. If a democrat came and did a universal health care and insurance policy, I’d be all for it, but they won’t do it. Ik u gonna think it’s stupid because it’s not all liberal, but this is my best shot

Hey Vox! I love your content and method of display, and I even recently submitted a survey for you guys, but the reason I consume your content is so that I can use it. However, I am unable to use information that I believe was tainted through a view of partisanship, which is very disappointing because I know that much of the information presented is accurate. It is hard for me to draw upon Vox as a credible source to someone with a polarized view of your content. I realize that nowadays it is becoming increasingly difficult to portray the current political system system in a positive light, but attempts and considerations for the viewer to see both sides would establish a sense of validity. Of course, I don’t know if this is the goal you’re striving towards; Vox could be only a method to promote leftist ideas and beliefs, which is fine, as long as it is portrayed and defined as such. Anyways, I still enjoy the content, I only wish it could be of more use to me.

I lean more libertarian on many issues... I see the back and forth as a mediocre distraction from the real problems we face as a nation. even with my political position I still enjoy watching Vox videos so I have an idea of what the left thinks of the right because unless we can have a dialogue we will never make progress. I feel like we're in a shitstorm of meta news. Bringing up news in the news about the news is just becoming convoluted. We see this on both sides. It's like we're attacking a strawman while our nation suffers.
