In the last few years, Disney and Pixar have shown a few stories showing the effects that fear and anger can leave on a family. Between the release of Coco in 2017 and both Encanto and Turning Red this year, audiences have been granted some relatable films discussing generational trauma. Today, we want to go over these films and compare their content.

Miguel Rivera: A young budding musician who's forced into shoe-making and hiding his musical side because of an old family rule. Mirabel Madrigal: The black sheep of a family gifted with magical powers, as she has no magical gift in her family. Meilin Lee: A girl blessed with ancestral red panda magic, who has to keep who she truly is confined to hiding so she could please her mother. All three are very similar, but unique in their own rights.

while encanto has emotional truama with alma making her family work hard , turning red has meiling with her having problems with her panda gift and coco has miguel trying to find why his family doesn't allow music anymore in their lives.

Abuelita HAD a good reason - shoemaking was associated with stability and prosperity. Sort of like how Global North(and those outside of it, too, but this example is relevant in here) parents push their children to study medicine instead of letting them chase dreams of being superstars. Imelda was a single mom, barely out of her teens(most likely having birthed Coco in her late teens), and through shoemaking she could keep her and her daughter fed.

Except it wasn't fair to expect all of her descendants to choose the same career path as she did and inherit her fear of having another musician in the family. That is what made the family dysfunctional.

Yeah, but Alma and Ming had even better reasons - Alma saw her husband being killed and was left alone along with 3 babies, and Ming lost her control and almost killed her own mother because of the pressure she was putting on her. Plus, they weren’t as much of the jerks to their kids/grandkids as Abuelita was to Miguel.

@@susankornas2613 Elena was loving towards Miguel though in her toxic way except for the big exception that she broke his guitar. And it's clear that she thought that even that was necessary to keep her grandson from disappearing from the family if he became a musician.

@@Furienna Well, that doesn’t change the fact she was nothing but a jerk! Even Alma and Ming would never destroy any of the precious properties of their families.

@@susankornas2613 It is much more complicated though than that Elena simply was a jerk. Yes, it is really a heart-breaking scene when she destroys the guitar. And it's clear that even Miguel's father who otherwise agreed that becoming a musician would be bad for his son thought that that was too much. But that is how much Imelda poisoned Elena's mind with her fear that any family member who became a musician would disappear and be excluded from the family. Which is clearly so unacceptable in Mexico, that Miguel had to learn a lesson about the importance of family as if he had done something wrong. And as I come from Sweden, I know that this makes little to no sense from an Occidental perspective. But from a Latin American perspective, what Elena did would be seen as harsh but understandable when you consider the circumstances. And as weird as this sounds, Elena destroying the guitar was also a necessary step in Miguel's journey to save Hector from the final death. Because if Miguel still had had his old guitar, he wouldn't have taken Hector's guitar in Ernesto's mausoleum and gone to the land of the dead. Which he just had to do to learn the truth about what had happened and be able to refresh Coco's memory, so she could talk about her father before she passed away. So if you look at the moment when Elena destroyed the guitar within the context of Mexican culture in general and the scenario in that story in particular? Then it becomes clear that while Miguel had every right to be upset and angry, he still never should have said that he didn't want to be a part of his family anymore. And it was like Elena had to destroy his guitar, so he could save Hector and make the Riveras heal and stop being dysfunctional at last. And that is the end of this wall of text, but it truly is a much more complex story than that Elena simply was a jerk for no good reason...

Honestly, I love how the main characters do what they believe is right to do and change everything. If no one in your family believes what you doing is right, you have to prove to them. The more you keep letting your family put you down, the more you will regret in your life. Imagine what would happen if all 3 main characters didn’t do what they had to do what’s right to themselves. Coco- Hector would have died if Miguel was still in the land of the living and the family would have ground him maybe. Encanto- Everything would have been toxic and Mirabel would’ve have still been upset and not be able to prove you don’t need powers to be special. Turning red- Mei would’ve lost her friends forever and miss the concert(even tho her mom already ruined it) , and would’ve been in big trouble. Never wait to do the right thing.

The main reason I liked Encanto and Turning Red much more than Coco, is because Mirabel and Mei basically had a support from the very beggining. Mirabel was on good terms with Antonio and her mom for example, while Mei could count on both her friends and her dad. And Miguel? He basically didn’t have much of a support before he met Hector, basically his whole family was hostile towards him because he liked music. Maybe I’d like Coco more, if Miguel actually did have friends who also love music, or at least one member of his family supported his interests. (Ok, I know there was also that dog, but I wouldn’t say it was enough for him)

Even if they weren't supportive of his dreams of becoming a musician, it is clear that Miguel's parents and grandmother loved him. That is why they didn't want him to follow a path, that they thought would lead to a disaster for him. And by the way, it is mentioned in a book that Mama Coco sang songs for Miguel when he was a baby and triggered his love for music. That is never mentioned in the movie, but it would explain why he's so fond of her even after she became senile...
