I was overly focused on making money on Twitch. I tried too hard. Had a sub count I never reached, a bit goal above it that was quite high too. I got burnt out, and when I came back after a month I realised how stupid it was. Now I love streaming again in all honesty. I don't even want to make this my job, I just got carried away with the thought of extra cash instead of appreciating the fun I could have Edit: just got to the 9 minute mark on the video and this is now my outlook. I already have a job and had one when I had this mindset, I should be doing this for fun lol

You can save up money, to fund your living for a couple of months off of work. Depending on where you live its possible. What set me off about his video was him saying that being partner isnt that important when it is on twitch. Think of it as their verification like instagrams verification. Again, it just seems like hes telling people to quit streaming because "its tremendous hard work" it is, but its not harder than Blue Collared work there is. And its 1000x more fun. All im saying is its like with anything else, if you put your hard work and effort into it. Youll accomplish goals

I am a simple streamer. All I want to do is have fun playing games and chatting to people. I didnt always have that mindset. When I first started, I will admit I was one of those people who had a goal of affiliate. I was lucky I got it pretty quickly. After that, I had a bit of a low energy phase of "why am I doing this, I'm not growing anymore". When I thought about it deeply, I knew streaming was never about the money for me, but to have fun and chat with my community. When I focused on that, I started to grow! I am still a small streamer, but I am so lucky I have regulars, people who chat in my streams, and have fun with me. To me that's all that matters :)

I only reached affiliate because when I was getting into streaming a friend of my buddy raided me and got me to affiliate. However, every single person from that raid never came back. That’s when I realized I need to focus on a healthy streaming goal rather than just being an affiliate streaming aiming for partner.

This touches on the thing that's always bugged me about Twitch and the culture surrounding it: people act so desperate. Desperate for viewers, desperate for followers, desperate for subs, desperate to make affiliate, desperate to make partner, desperate for bits and donations, etc. It's one big frantic hustle where many act like they'll literally drop dead if they don't reach their goals within a set time. This is often reflected within the streams themselves where the thirsty desperation of the streamer is palpable.

I know a lot of people who quit playing their instrument when they graduated from a conservatorium (uni for musicians.) I think it's a similar thing. The goal is motivating and once it's gone, you're kinda left out in the cold. You either create your own goals or do something else. For me, the goal of Twitch has always been to help me stay motivated to practice, and to get solo repertoire together. I started with only having written 3 or 4 full arrangements and I'm at nearly 40 now. I feel better about turning down "exposure" gigs now because I know I can perform on stream without having to leave my house.

I just got affiliate! yay me but. I never really pushed for affiliate. I do like followers and recently grinded for followers, but my main goal is building a community that people want to come to watch. Like I love when people follow me just to "support" my stream, but most of those people never come back to view anything, so having that extra follower doesn't mean much. Eljay as always with the great advice. Hitting affiliate changes nothing if you "hacked" your way to it. If you have zero viewers to begin with then theres still zero people there to donate bits or interact with widgets or whatever you add to your stream. Make a stream you enjoy and stream because you enjoy it. If you are just streaming to make money you will burn out when that money doesn't come flooding in like you hope.

Thanks, Eljay, always enjoy your videos. I remember I cheesed getting to affiliate and regretted it, because I really wasn’t ready to hit the ground running once I got there. Many (most?) followers are one-time viewers. It’s easy to click that button when you come in with a raid, or when you happen across someone’s stream while your favourite streamer’s on a break, or whatever; and you never, ever go back to the channel. So number of followers doesn’t really mean squat. Viewers are more important than followers, because they’re actual people who are making time to watch your stream. Even then, how many viewers are watching you actively? They might be gaming and have you on in the background. They might have two or three tabs open and have you muted while they watch someone else. They might not even be in the room! So the figures are pretty misleading, ultimately.

Great advice! I absolutely agree with you. TL/DR version; Dont focus solely on numbers, youre gonna burn yourself out and stun your growth, have fun! Be yourself and make connections! Long rambling story: I use to just focus on my follower count and views because i accounted them towards self-worth. It stopped me from growing and stopped me from playing games with my friends for fun because i was so convinced once i hit Affiliate, i would suddenly gain popularity, with my Channel Points and My custom emotes. As someone who is still starting out, enjoy time with yourself, when you stream act like your doing a sceipt for a KZbin video, its okay to talk to yourself. Another thing i think is super important, is to get to know people and make connections, i started watching streams with commen interests, we mingled and became friends, and now we watch each others streams, ive even met new friends through those newly made friends! Have fun! Grow as a person, get out of your shell and met new people! 🎉

I have been actively taking your advice and planning, writing things down, on what would make good content, what would be a good stream etc as well as looking into that evergreen content. All of this has been pushing myself further to make better, more engaging, quality videos while I plan how I shall stream. At the end of the day, I want to make quality content, and those numbers can really hijack your focus. As a growing KZbinr I have the ability to experiment, test what works for me first before finding that niche of individuals that prefer a type of content over me than the other. It's also so true, where I have put out videos that I've felt were absolutely baller, and in the analytics they didn't perform at all. Couldn't agree more other than to be yourself imo. I dont look at the numbers anymore and haven't for a while. I just do it because I enjoy it so much. I like playing a variety of games and have random conversations with people in my chat. To be transparent here, I really started streaming just to create a space that wasn't so toxic to engage in certain game types. I mainly stream Destiny 2 (saturated game), but it is a game I enjoy and reasonably good at it. However, there are other Destiny 2 streamers that have more resources and more experience. Regardless, I am still trying to improve with each stream and create things for other platforms. I just have to do a better job in delegating time for my other channels and be more engaging in my streams. Thanks for your information in these videos. Also btw, my biggest advice is to just look at it as a hobby. It fun to fantasize sometimes about "making it" but that in it of itself can be very subjective. Try your best to focus on the "making it" aspect as just having a few people who come back to your stream for entertainment.

Thank you for everything you do. Every time I watch your videos my self confidence goes up. I am affiliate on twitch, I've had one payout on the part year. I stream games I enjoy and I have many extras that I use when I do. I stream Star Citizen daily, I also use Tobii Eye tracker 5, HCS VoicePacks (for crew members on my ship) and I treat the "game" as a little in another universe. While everyone runs around, I role play as my character, waking and doing normal life stuff, it's the way I enjoy playing the game. I play with my friends on discord and my main viewers are my daughter and my best friend when he can watch, so my average is between 0 and 1.2. I do have sponsors, I know it's a niche game, but it is what I enjoy and I pay the way I want. I'm in the weird position to either leave twitch and move to KZbin (even though I stream to both), when I do get viewers, KZbin viewers are more likely to chat with me. This was a great ego boost that has helped me but feel bad for stressing to no one... My sponsors enjoy my streams and it is very unique. Plus I use more extras than stole if the bigger streamers that play Star Citizen. It's weird, in also finding that intelligence is a detriment (no offense, I've just seen other friends streams and they are dumb as rocks), I guess people fully like the role play and slow paced and planned ideas. I'm also finding that games like apex and CoD get huge views, those hangers do but interest me, I love simulation style games and I won't stream anything other than that Thank you so much for your videos they are really helpful and help me but feel bad for being a small steamer, for context, I started streaming in 2015. The one thing I know I need to do is edit my VODs and upload them to KZbin, I'm just so busy with real life that I don't have much time.

My problem is I really want those affiliate features cause they are what make your channel more unique and engaging, I hate that the features that would help you reach affiliate and make your channel grow are locked behind a goal like that. My goal was to hit affiliate, while partner sounds great if I hit it I hit it its not my goal. While I do want to make some money off the stream, having it give me some extra spending money is all I'm looking for. Having it replace my current job would require over 2000 subs, and if I'm not having fun what is the point. I love the interaction I get from chat, but right now its not common. The big thing I need to do is work on my lack of interaction content. This is something that I feel is getting better, but is still far from where it need to be. Looking back on when my headmate's partner suddenly made money from affiliate, and when some of my friends made affiliate and still haven't seen a dime, and the really wild part is, I find my friend's content more entertaining! But my headmate's partner knew how to capitalize on another streamer's absence and they knew she carried similar energy, so she streamed during those times and got paid for it. Networking is just so insane!

I got affiliate and stayed at a steady 9 view average over a year ago. It felt awful. My content never felt “good enough” for people to be subbed, I didn’t stream enough for people subbing to be worth it. So I dropped myself from the program and just stream for fun and when I have the time! If I grow, I grow, but I’m having more fun this time around.

The best tip I give people is be strategic about your streaming in going for affiliate. Instead of leaving stream on for 8 hours late into the night, look at your stream analytics and pick your 3 highest traffic hours per night to stream or even only a couple nights per week.

No… because that’s just picking times that might not be sustainable long term for you, my highest traffic is midnight till 3AM. No way id be able to continue that if I did it to get affiliate. It’s the same as what I said in the middle about quick hacks to reach affiliate. The best and most strategic advice is to make discoverable content, that is good quality, and can be consistently done.

@@StreamScheme my comment was strictly focused on getting affiliate because once you get it, you have it. If you have 2 hours of "good traffic" and 6 hours of "poor traffic", your "good traffic" viewership has to be much higher (4x) to reach the 3 viewer average as opposed to leveraging your high traffic times. I agree it's not a good strategy long-term in building a brand and an identity as a creator nor have I done it since getting affiliate but that's also just the downside to the constraints of reaching affiliate. It also does not apply to going for Partner since that's an application-based process anyway. As to your part about making discoverable content, once you figure that part out, getting affiliate would be easy because you're likely already very established in your identity but I wouldn't mind having affiliate between being new and established.

When I'm always asked if I make money from streaming or making videos, I always answer not yet, but that's just a side affect and that I'm putting myself out there to try and entertain an audience and grow my own little community. Affiliate and stuff like that would be nice, but in the end its more about having fun. Great advice!

the general dislike for my massive focus on streaming over the past year and trying to edit the streams into videos i like when i wanted to focus on youtube is what drove me to piviot my content to an almost lets play style video that focuses on engaging commentary and doesn't care a whole lot about the game. I used to want to just stream and make funny moments videos before i realized how much i dislike trying to make those videos. ill still put out funny moments stuff but itll be once every so often instead of weekly in the form of shorts compilations which i enjoy making. overall im much more satisfied now that im doing what i enjoy and not what i thought i liked. i cant break the mindset of "i want to hit this arbitrary goal" but i changed my content to what i like and some videos may get less than 10 views but some are performing in the 100s of views so im seeing actual growth at least in views doing what i love which is the happy medium i think all creators want to achieve at the end of the day

Couldn't agree more Eljay the real grind starts after you get affiliated If your goals are set your like the number of followers or subscribers you have you will burn out really quickly like I understand why people do it like its one of the easiest way to track like your "Progress" but I think learning how to enjoy the journey instead of the destination really goes a long way.

Hey Eljay, I've been doing a lot of thinking about my own content. What I want to create, where I want to be in x time, if it's even something I'm capable of, etc... I just want to say that I appreciate the value that you bring to your respective creative platforms. You're doing this because you're passionate, and want to share that with others. I would say this is also a really important lesson that we, as your community can learn from you, create something that you want to share. If you can't see yourself wanting to share, or feeling proud of what you created, take a step back and ask yourself what you would be proud enough to share with others. Then do that!

I got into streaming because it is a form of live acton creative expression that I enjoy, I reached affiliate not too long ago after 2 months and It felt really good! I know that it is just a baby step and truth be told any time I go live I focus on the reality of the situation which is that most of the content that I will have from the stream is going to be in the form of edited down gameplay segments later in time and not during the stream because I dont have a huge following. Either way I enjoy the content creation and video editing aspect as well as the live interaction with viewers.

What do I do if i stream something i really love and a-lot of my follows came from that and then they never comeback or i stream it for hours and then when i realize that the chat is moving slow and see that i have the given 1 viewer that everyone gets i lose all interest in continuing streaming and I end stream right then and there?

Watch your content back after and figure out why it’s not retaining viewers. Or start streaming the the intent to edit it into videos, then the view count doesn’t matter.

Hellowww 👀 I've been watching your video now for quite a bit. And I'm so happy that I did everything you teach in the video without watching the video 😂 I'm a fully new streamer and I always wanted to entertain people and damn I've hitted affiliate really fast. I had my 11 people watching me and the only thing what was missing after the first stream to reach affiliate was to stream on different days and 8hrs. And still after this, it means the world to me. I enjoy talking to my small but very cute community and every single stream I see someone new! It was like a dream I couldn't believe that after a week I reached affiliate. And still I'm doing everything right. I optimize my stream and testing new things and my chat likes it! But I really have to say, just focusing on making money with streaming is the worng way when you start streaming. Don't get me wrong I really enjoy it when my community reach goals for new stream asserts etc. but mainly I love to talk to all of them. And I guess that the reason why it worked out for me so quickly. And I still have a goal It's not mainly become a partner but mainly my goal is to grow little by little and have great streams an become a really good Entertainer 🤗

Oooh, tough but caring advice, this. I see new streamers fixate on the numbers and the milestones and less on "is my content good?" all the time. Numbers are quantifiable! Good is subjective! And really, most of us aren't "good" at content right off the bat. Everyone sucks when they start. It is hard to master OBS, set things up so your internet connection and PC can handle it, talk engagingly, keep a schedule, take and edit clips, and on and on and on... you've got to get a handle on those before anything else. Affiliate is just Twitch saying "you are okay enough at streaming that we think we can make some money off of you" and when I think on it, it feels less like a compliment and more like I'm juicy enough to be ground up into a burger. 😱

I absolutely agree with what you were mentioning about all the follow for follow shenanigans. When I first started off, I was REALLY focused on getting to 50 followers, thinking THAT would be the hardest part of getting to affiliate, so I joined a bunch of Discord servers that were supposed to "help you grow your channel" but honestly those claims couldn't be farther from the truth. When I got a follow from someone on the same server, they NEVER came back to the stream. They just left a follow to help me get a number and that doesn't help at all. Truthfully, if I could start streaming over from the beginning (I'm still a VERY small streamer mind you all, been streaming 2 years with 455 followers), I would absolutely not concern myself with the follower and average viewer number, and therefore not join all these "follow for follow" channels because, in hindsight, it's not as beneficial as it might seem. To me at least. I get very anxious when numbers are low to me, so I usually turn those statistics off on OBS, but this has caused me to not enjoy streaming as much, as I've been focusing entirely on the numbers instead of my mental health and longing to just sit back, and enjoy a video game with friends.
