It is foolish to underestimate what is happening here. Wagner has already taken the headquarters of the Southern Military District in Rostov-on-don with no resistance. Do not overlook the experience these "simple criminals" have earned. They are 25,000 well stocked battle hardened soldiers, straight out of blood filled trenches, headed toward Moscow, while 90% of Russia's troops are in the far south fighting Ukraine. The Russian National Guard is no match for Wagner, and civilian reaction has been at worst fear and at best welcoming. It may also be worth keeping in mind that there is a chance this would not have occurred without some assurance from people in high places; Russian politics are cutthroat. It is going to be interesting.

Pregozin has a weak strategic position. I don't think he is poised to take over the goverment. I do think his tactical position is extremely strong. I think he takes Moscow. I think it happens in days. Russia doesn't have the concentration of forces where they need them at this moment. It's confusing because Prigozhin is saying the war in Ukraine is not necessary and was started for false reasons. However, it feels as though Prigozhin will still continue fighting the war in Ukraine, even if he does manage to topple the Russian Defense Minister. Could you imagine if Putin has allowed this to all happen- so that he can turn around to the Russians and say "I was deceived by the Ministry of Defense. Let's end the war." Putin maybe looking for an exit out of this war? Let's pray that this is the case.

Majority of the regular army will follow or abstain from conflict in some fashion, just like in 1905 and 1917. They are tired, angry and scared and largely not ideologically on board. They also have cell phones and can informally create the consensus and coordination required in much quicker time. The slightest move by Ukraine, a light, creeping barrage will force a decision amongst the rank and file and the line will collapse.

Let me as an ex-military officer be a bit 'out there' for a minute. I have a strange feeling that this development is of Ukraine's making. What could be more helpful to Ukraine's long touted counter-offensive than a weakening of its enemy's political and military structure just when they need those things most? Said it before, the Ukrainians are cunning and determined fighters with nothing to lose. When the mud dries, don't be surprised that we find the Ukrainians have been chatting with Wagner for months now. Bring this war to a speedy solution now so Ukraine can rebuild for its people.
