Russian President Vladmir Putin is expected to announce the annexation of four regions of Ukraine - just like he did with Crimea in 2014. But this isn’t total deja vu, because this time, he’s on the backfoot and he's in trouble.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Following months of stalemate after his failure to take the capital Kyiv, Putin’s forces were surprised by a Ukrainian counteroffensive that either pushed his forces back, or made them flee.
And so now, he’s had to hold sham referendums and initiate a partial mobilisation to try to turn things around. But can he?
In today’s episode, we speak to our presenter and Europe editor Matt Frei in Kyiv about how this point in the war is arguably one of the most pivotal moments for all sides in this bitter conflict.
Produced by: Nina Hodgson, Heidi Pett

Why is there NO footage of frontline conflict? Is it because the Nazis in Ukraine are committing war crimes? The armed personnel are to protect the citizens as they vote. Five reasons why Putin can't use nuclear weapons in Ukraine: 1. Nuclear weapons are a strategic deterrence and to use those will rob the Kremlin of the last line of its skunk defence strategy that is born more of weakness than a position of military strength. 2. Using a nuclear tactical war-head on Ukraine's widely-dispersed forces won't have any real military impact; to use those on any city like Kyiv or Lviv will be so horrendous, the Kremlin can expect to be immediately hit with conventional cruise missiles. In such an event, there is a good chance that the Finnish army will seize the Russian nuclear arsenal in the isolated Murmansk base on the Arctic Sea to prevent Putin from using any of those, and there is nothing that the depleted Russian army can do to prevent that from happening. 3. The use of nuclear weapons will also see an alliance of the willing NATO members join the Ukrainians Defence Force in the theatre of war and destroy the Russian forces in very short order, because it will be rightfully seen as an attack on all of Europe. Countries like the Finns, the Baltic states and Poland have a long list of historical grievances to settle, and the Kremlin knows they're chafing at the bit to do so. 4. The prevailing winds in Europe blow West to East, meaning any radio-active fall-out will be blown over Russia and the other Federation members like Kazakhstan who is already siding against Putin. That will open up new military fronts on Russia's eastern borders that the Kremlin no longer can defend. 5. The plutonium in nuclear warheads has to be replaced every five years to remain effective. Given the evidentially deplorable state of Russia's conventional arsenal, it is highly unlikely this ever happened. The still-huge Russian nuclear arsenal therefore likely amounts to mostly "dirty nukes", unlike that of the other nuclear powers in NATO. It's game over for Vladimir Putin. All he can do is to try and postpone the inevitable moment when one of his generals puts a bullet through the back of his head to prevent him from starting World War III.

So tell the truth and stop with the lies, try it, we can build a better world with the truth, that will scar the oligarchy and its pets in the political arena. Think of the good you could do rather than serving the evil course of the 1% It is the #MSM that has enabled the destruction of western #democracy they must be very proud of there to work, in their selfish actions they also confer slavery on their flesh and blood who will suffer because of their incompetency or the selling out of the real news, journalism, and our freedoms. The reason so many Russians want to leave is that being born in Russia they are only too aware of the ‘double speak’ used by authorities. Partial mobilisation means full mobilisation, only reservists means anyone with a pulse, volunteers means forced conscription, generous pay means no pay, comprehensive training means a walk from the barracks to the front lines and rapid medical response means bring your own first aid kit.

In no war ever before did one side say "No! you cannot do that! If you do that we will nuke you!" over and over again, to almost every plan of the opposite side. An example might be Ukraine bombing or even capturing Belgorod. "No! you cannot do that! If you do that we will nuke you!" Every form of bombing of Russia is not allowed, but Bombing Ukraine is ok. Russia: "This is a - 'we can bomb you, you cannot bomb us' war." This is unique in history. The tactic now is just how many times will the nuke card be played.

I know things are going to be rough in Europe thanks to the gas situation, but Europeans need to be reminded what happened the last time a nation annexed its neighbor and the rest of Europe went with appeasement. Giving in to Russia at this point is going to invite a vastly worse war that won't be limited to making Europe suffer a cold winter. If Putin's nuclear blackmail works in Ukraine, he will use it again, and the next time may involve a NATO country.

It may be that fools are always confident, but that doesn't necessarily mean that all those who are confident are fools. There are many endeavors in life where success requires confidence, such as sports, war, politics, etc. In my experience, preparation, planning, and practice lead to confidence, and confidence leads to success. I'm just waxing philosophical here. I don't mean to criticize, your quote just got me thinking, that's all.

William, I see where are you coming from, but unfortunately the statement is correct. NATO Is a military organization that doesn't decide by itself, because we're in democracy. It is ultimately governed by the governments of its member countries, and at this time, the majority of the European (more specifically EU) countries has no military teeth against anyone. They ability is limited to small teams of commandos and air fighters at the best. And that is for good reasons, consider that their armies are run and composed for peace time. It is very different from the USA, and to an extent, from the UK.

Matt mentioned the digging of trenches being more difficult with the onset of winter with the ground being frozen. Nothing drain's your energy so much like digging a trench in normal ground, using simple hand tools never mind frozen ground. There are small motorized excavators that will make that task a lot easier. A few of those out on the battlefield might be a good idea.

"tell me again, why is it that the ukrainians are confident that they will win the war?" My opinion: Russia will lose a long-term war because with more time passing by, the more Ukraine will get western weapons and training (rather than former-Warsaw-pact weapons as they did initially), and the more Russia will be weakened, socially and economically, by the sanctions. If the war lasts three or four more years, Putin is bound to suffer politically more and more, until somebody gives him a spicy tea. In Ukraine people will not protest in the streets against war, but in Russia discontent is mounting and in two-three years it might erupt in giant demonstrations that might force Putin to resign and flight somewhere.

It's very ironic that Putin is so scared of being overthrown, like the Czars were in 1917, yet every decision he's made since this war began has only increased the likelihood that he will be. He started a war that nobody wanted, he employs the most ineffective military tactics & strategy that leads to high casualties and embarrassment on the battlefield, his war brings sanctions from the West down upon him that cripple the Russian economy, and then he institutes a very controversial and unpopular draft. Every single one of these things only increases the anger and dissatisfaction among the Russian population with his leadership. Again and again in recent months he keeps doing things that have the opposite effect of what he intended.

@RichardTaylor1630
@RichardTaylor1630 Жыл бұрын
@@guywebster8018 You got that half right -- Putin correctly assessed that Biden would be a weaker POTUS, but he didn't count on Boris Johnson standing up to Russia in a way that forced the Biden administration to get on the bandwagon of opposition to the invasion, lest Biden completely forfeit the US's role of leadership of the western alliance. He also utterly miscalculated the determination of the Ukrainian people to fight back - which led the US / NATO to give Ukraine more support once they saw that a Russian victory was not inevitable.

This is the most sensible comment I've read. Unfortunately, both the US and the UK are determined to continue escalating the war, not to help Ukraine, but to defeat Russia. And the reason? The US has a neurotic and historic fear of communism dating back to the 1940s. Russia is no longer communist, but the American neurosis continues. I'm not anti American or pro Russian, but the idea that Russia wants to take over the whole of Europe is absurd, and comparisons with WW2 are not valid. The world needs this war to stop now, and we need to stop arming Ukraine. You cannot put out a fire by pouring petrol on to it.
