Reggie discusses how Uniqlo, while useful, has completely altered the course of fashion in Japan. Once a bastion of eclectic styles and experimentation, Japan is a shell of its former self. Largely due to the economy but also due to Uniqlo capitalizing on the moment. It all gets discussed in this weeks episode of The State.

Rosez I was confused by what you were saying- but this is my interpretation of why the whole “buy basics from thrifting” is a poor and insignificant solution to the fast fashion issue: Buying thrifted basics isn’t impossible, but it’s significantly more difficult and time consuming, making it seem like a less than viable/accessible option for most people when all you want is a basic, long sleeve white shirt. Fast fashion encompasses many more companies beyond the H&M’s and Fashion Nova’s; if a company is not a fashion house or boutique, then more than likely it’s fast fashion retailer. Many of the popular fast fashion retailers use poor quality materials to produce their clothing as to encourage cyclical consumerism, but not all of them. Instead of increasing the selection of clothing offered, there are some retailers who opt to use better quality/longer lasting materials so that they can charge significantly more for their clothing. As someone who thrifts often- many thrift stores are filled with used fast fashion clothing items that are of low quality. Realistically, most people would rather walk into a store and buy a high-quality basic tee with a standard sizing that can last, than spend the time sifting through second hand clothing in hopes to find a basic that is in good shape AND fits. The issue with fast fashion is that people are consuming trends and throwing away clothes at a faster pace than ever, largely due social media the accessibility of internet shopping, and the cultural values surrounding the “health” of our economy. In a counterintuitive way, people are using fast fashion trends as a way to express their uniqueness. People go thrifting so that they can find unique pieces, and the clothing options available reflect that. The market for thrifted basics is not there. I think if you encourage: - thrifting as a way to express uniqueness and - buying high quality basics from companies using sustainable practices It would be a better angle for engaging people in sustainable clothing habits, and yield better results. The end result stays the same, you would only make the method of uniqueness more accessible. The only incentive one has for buying basics from thrifting is to feel morally superior, which if that was a strong motivator, there would be a lot more vegans. Also, the US economy is doing pretty well, so under capitalism and perceived prosperity, people are encouraged to spend more on frivolous items. Having lived through a recession as an adult and even from the references for on Japan’s economy, once the economy slows, it will impact people’s spending habits and the pendulum will swing back to a more conservative, basic, or normcore aesthetic. It is during this time that thrifting/vintage/second hand shopping will capture more of the masses. This isn’t about saving the planet... it’s about capitalism. If your smart... you’ll create a solution that increases accessibility now so that it captures and keeps consumers attention during the impending recession. And they would just so happen to be helping out the planet in the process.

I work for Uniqlo and I can honestly say I stand behind the products I sell. With the discount I get, my closet is slowly becoming more and more plain tees. I’ve never been a fan of the UTs, even the KAWS collection, but everything else I see when I walk my sales floor I can say that I enjoy. Supima cotton, Airism, package tees, light jackets, etc. It’s good quality stuff, and considering I’ve folded and worn the pieces hundreds of times, I can truly say I like what I sell, and love when I can talk to people who don’t know anything about the brand.

Ok, here's the thing. Japanese were always, always, always conservatively dressed. The people you see in Fruits magazine, rocking the nuigurumi, dressed goth-loli, and going ganguro always made up a very small percentage of the population. However, that percentage of the population tended to hang out in Harajuku and/or Shibuya. And they still do. Your comment below about Japanese fashion being limited to Harajuku was ALWAYS true. I've lived in Japan on and off since 1997. (The downturn started much earlier, btw.) The magazines that you mention? They went out of business because they weren't profitable and never were. They were funded by the companies themselves, to promote their own fashion... I understand you are an outsider, but to fill you in, Uniqlo is considered Dasai, and something that middle aged men and women wear. You know, like me.

This episode is NOT about Uniqlo ruining all of fashion nor is it about Uniqlo being a bad choice. It's about Uniqlo changing the landscape of fashion in Japan and single handedly being responsible for the noticeable change in Japanese style patterns. The products ARE of better quality than nearly all fast fashion retailers BUT to see the results of their reign is something to behold in Japan. Magazines that once catalogued Japanese fashion have shut down, and the styles of the past are only sprinkled throughout hot spots like Harajuku.

Yeah, multiple factors at play. Shrinking younger population; less disposable income among that population; explosion of fast fashion chains (including Uniqlo) in mid 00s in Japan and elsewhere; all the points you mentioned about Uniqlo; Japan being increasingly influenced by US/western trends (due to fast fashion stores and strength of US pop culture); street wear/niche labels having a global market they can sell to so they can jack up the prices more and know rich kids across the US, China, Korea, and elsewhere will buy that stuff whereas if they only had Japan, they'd have to keep the prices lower.

Uniqlo can be the staple basics on which you may add some more unique street fashion garments. Imagine it like the rice to a curry. I'm not a fan of outfits in which every piece has to be some rad street fashion thing so it's good to have a foundation built one uniqlo-ish stuff then finish it off with some thing special or nice kicks, accesories etc. They are quality so it helps keep the closet full and the wallet safe.

On one hand, i largely appreciate how easy it is for people to dress neatly in Japan - compared to my own country we always noticed how well dressed the men were in Japan. People don't really care here, or haven't got a clue where to start. Having it all in one store is helpful, especially for people who don't actually LIKE shopping. On the other hand, fast fashion does horrible things to our culture of shopping and demand. We don't think about weather we really want or need something if it's cheap and easy to get. Fast fashion in my country is....not as high quality as uniqlo, but it's definitely fast! I worry that we spend too much time consuming and not enough time thinking about what we wear. I think there's a place for what uniqlo does, quality, easy, comfortable, but it is always a worry when a store/brand/company alone controls a market, financially and culturally.

What i struggle with when going there is the fashion ideas, and sheer simplicity - it's just plainly boring and uneventful a lot of the time. Like who even wants to wear a sompletely unbranded or marked jacket or fleece for example? And there current regimen of showcasing artists designs on shirts work about 3% of the time, but to be honest I can't even say I would come up with many more better graphics if I was asked to.

I feel like this is only observing one specific subset of Japanese fashion, and there is such a broad spectrum of what "Japanese street fashion" is, beyond Bape. Those "obscure" brands in Fruits were the brands that me and millions of girls built their street fashion wardrobes off of. I still see fashion students and all sorts of creatives walking around in very daring fashion choices. Shibuya 109 is thriving with interesting fashion, Takeshita is still a thing. Plus, I've left Uniqlo with a pair of black and white polka dot culottes and a sweater completely plastered with Ukiyo-e. I just don't think the reach of the "Uniqlo is destroying Japanese street fashion" is far enough to reach all aspects of the word.

Really interesting video, but Japanese street fashion doesn't just revolve around what the west consider as street aka BAPE and all. Its also the constant growth of resale/vintage fashion, alternative fashion that do come and go but sometimes stay such as Lolita, otome-kei, brands like Milk and Milkboy, larme-kei,... While Uniqlo has greatly impacted the fashion industry, Japanese fashion is constantly in movement and wide-ranging not just hypebeast culture lol

When it comes to simple and basic clothing I’ve always sort of preferred GU style wise, I’m not sure why, but Uniqlo is good for heattech! However I usually wear brands such as Liz Lisa, Ank rouge, Secret Honey, Axes femme etc, so I really tend to just use both stores for casual comfy wear or simple items like underwear and cardigans~

I guess it makes sense that during times of economic decline that the designer fashion industry would take a hard hit. Hopefully this won't lead to labels sacrificing quality to reach a lower price point, but they might need to start looking for ways to reach people who are fashion-forward but thrifty.

Not gonna lie as i grow up i tend to wear just basic timeless pieces and uniqlo provides that. Its cheap, quality, easily replaceable. All my dress shirts and basic tshirts are from the brand. I guess as u grow older i just dont feel the need to dress loud anymore. I still buy shoes but starting to go toward jewelry pieces now that will hold it price for the most part if im planning on buying something expensive

This could change if better and more affordable methods to manufacture were available to smaller franchises, the price of materials isn't as exorbitant as it used to be 50 years ago so I believe it's possible.

Lived in Japan for years. UNIQLO is pretty big there, but I’d say that Zara also caters to a large percent of younger/older Japanese. The common understanding ( & I’ve just returned from 8 years in Osaka-Tokyo) Zara- private life UNIQLO-work life fashion.

I've always seen uniqlo as your regular basis average everyday wear. ever since I first came to Korea, because where I live in the US we don't have a Uniqlo, I was confused about the hype. I've heard it mentioned in KZbin videos by people in the US and Canada who how do Uniqlo near them. so I always wanted to see what it was about and it's just basics it's literally a store that sells basics. if you need a white t you go to uniqlo. if you need some basic slacks for work you go to Uniqlo. like to me, that's what it has always looked like. like even before I saw Uniqlo irl, the clothes that they sell there are the clothes that I've always imagined to be your average everyday clothing. especially for working adults. I really don't see anything special about this store nor do I find it cheap. the only thing I own from Uniqlo is shapewear and thermals lol. I need a basic white tee though so I might go there soon lol.

I think Uniqlo is a great place for the essentials at an affordable price. Everyday tees, cardigans, and underwear are the only things I buy from them. It's good quality, it's cheap, and it gets the job done for the basics. I wouldn't compare them to Gap or H&M. I'd say more like Guess or something similar. They have their own designs done well but aren't overly adventurous

I follow a lot of the labels in Fruits as a lolita and I wholly agree. So many brands are folding. Rather than Japanese buyers keeping them afloat, it's the overseas communities like China, HK and the U.S. pumping money. Despite this some have lowered in quality like Angelic Pretty and MILK.

I go on Uniqlo's website once or twice a year, but I've never bought anything. I found that pretty much everything was basic and in no way unique. I already own basics to wear when I don't go out, so I've never felt the need to buy from Uniqlo specifically. In my opinion Uniqlo is pretty boring, but I could see myself shopping there when I get older and want to tone down my style (though I hope that's never going to happen).

I feel like this video comparing to street fashion wasn't explained enough or researched enough. Uniqlo's style can't cover all the Street fashion styles. Street fashion is still alive, just they don't go to harujuku anymore because now it's over run by tourist (usually tourist bother them) and it's always crowded now. I wore Lolita in harujuku and it was hard in a big crowd of people. And people complaining about the price, there a is so much work that goes into designs. Such as angelic pretty, they literally have custom made lace and detailed/complex designs that could never be mass produced. Have you been to a Halloween costume shop? They rip off a lot of brands, into cheap, tacky and low quality versions for children. Street fashion is not meant for everyone, it's something you really have to want to do. If you want it, you'll work for it. Angelic pretty just made 1 million just last year so doesn't sound like they're dying.

I'm watching this video wearing UNIQLO head to toe XD I don't follow Japanese street fashion but most of my wardrobe is UNIQLO because the clothes are great quality, low cost, and they're fashionable and basic. I can wear my wardrobe to work and casually. And the key is that they fit me, I'm petite and it's amazing to have a store that the clothes work for me off the rack. It's disappointing though because they're fast fashion, so I really worry about the garment workers and people throughout the supply chain. The clothes are cheap, so where are they cutting corners? So I love the clothes but feel conflicted since it's fast fashion... I would definitely pay more for a similar brand that wastransparent about the ethics of their products and were making an effort to support garment workers and the environment.

7 years with the same navy tapered satin trousers. With my sensitive skin if its not natural fiber I cannot yet their short sleeve sweater(cotton, rayon and some poly something) still rocks up 3 years on. I have less clothes but a solid closet that fits my style anywhere anytime and for the rest I thrift for that little je ne sais quoi. I disagree with Uniqlo being "conservative". Basic in the truest sense of the world possibly. Their collection with Christophe Lemaire(ex-Lacoste I believe) is one of the few shops where I can find plain Tees,Hoodies,Sweaters and so on in a solid quality and they do COLOURS. Actual colours beyond black, white and grey. Hello bubblegum pink, wassup Red Coral. Try and find the same somewhere else for that price range and quality that won't bleed after 3 washes, let alone in the women section where a white T-shirt has to have fuckshit mottos from some hipster festival, frills or whatever. I think they understood the market was saturated and everyone and their mamas had a creative block of sort, thus releasing variations of the same iteration. They choose not to reinvent the wheel, but apply themselves without being bland about it. That's why unlike their counterpart the designers and creatives seek them, not the other way around. Their website still sucks tho. Shit is laborious to deal with. Fast Fashion it ain't.

I don't think Uniqlo fuck'd up the fashion game they're simply the Japanese Gap/H&M and there's a marketplace for this kind of shopping. Supreme fuck'd up the game with their basic designs and red tape logo over a blank canvas, hype surrounding such a basic concept actually supports a vid you did recently when you discuss how selling tshirts is different from having a fashion brand. That's essentially what Supreme did they took a basic t-shirt design more or less, they had some celebs rock it and boom.. Cat St is my go to for shopping been in Tokyo 4yrs and I've never hit up any Supreme store..it's all hype the shops like X-Large,Palace,Kinetics,Kith,Undftd(kind've) that have at least some genious thought and creative designs, don't garner near the craze or pub and they sell for dam near the same price as Supreme.

The argument is that Uniqlo infiltrated Japanese street fashion to the point where it killed off much of the creativity in style heavy centers in Japan, namely Harajuku. It's a high key secret between photographers that once catalogued Japanese fashion that Uniqlo shares a lot of the blame of this drop off. Their is a market for Uniqlo but in Japan specifically Uniqlo has been met with a sizable bit of scorn due to its 'washing' of creative style.

I’m not sure how fast fashion can “ruin” anything. It’s price comes with the detriment of people knowing the value of the item you’re wearing. If anything the Japanese are realizing that great looks can be achieved by spending $200 instead of $2,000, which is a mindset that’s more driven by economics than by large companies like UNIQLO. They’re only capitalizing on the mindset, not exactly instigating it.
