How Urshifu Finally Dethroned Urshifu

This is Giovanni Costa. He's about to click the move that wins the San Antonio Regional Championships. It's his first ever regional win, a well-earned title after nearly a decade of playing at VGC tournaments. The fact that he made it to this point probably didn't surprise anybody who was familiar with his time in Pokémon. But the way he did it might have.
Today, we're going to dive into the differences between the Urshifu forms that made Rapid Strike the dominant force in the VGC meta, and how Giovanni found a way to finally let Single Strike thrive and topple Rapid Strike's dominance in San Antonio.

It's funny how Urshifu competitive life in Gen 9 is a complete mirror of its Gen 8 career. In Gen 9 Rapid Strike form is the king, where in gen 8 it was actually Single Strike that was the dominant form.

In the end what made Wicked Blow better than Rapid Strike was that Rapid Strike was TOO good. Now everyone and their mother has beefed Water Bear Home Defense by default leaving little room to deal with the Dark Bear.

Love that this marks now two gens in a row that people initially dismissed Dark Ushrifu only for it to rise to the top (in Gen8 was it's dual typing getting "insta killed by Fairy types" and in Gen9 was due to the nerf to Wicked Blow). Long live the Single-strike.

I don't think anyone needed to set the trend in reg F with raging bolt and water ogrepon being everywhere and bad matchups for rapid strike. I'll be more interested in the inevitable restricted format with koraidon being a terrible matchup for both urshifu forms and miraidon being terrible for water urshifu.

It's funny to see this as a singles player, Single Strike was always better than Rapid Strike in that format. Especially last gen, during DLC1 of SS everybody was spamming Future Sight-Teleport with Single Strike to make future traps. It was broken

I was surprised and extremely disappointed when I found out that the Urshifus signature moves weren't just differently typed flavors of the same idea, but that Rapid Strike would deal less damage on average because of it being a 3 hit 25 power move instead of a 4 hit 20 power move or 2 hit 40 power move to be equivalent to Single Strike's base 80 back then. It wasn't something that dampened my opinions of either mon, but that random inconsistency was something I was hoping would be fixed in Scarlet and Violet, and thankfully they did make Wicked Blow 75 power
