And we were fighting on the ground also, the Russians just never fully realized it, they mistook hellfires from drones and helicopters as artillery, they also mistook the javelins our guys were using as artillery fire. Plus they engaging with small arms also, but that kind got lost in the bush of good, accurate artillery, air power and effective, one shot man portable anti tank weapons. There was also a QRF made up of more Marines on the way, with a shit ton of ammo to resupply and reinforce them if needed, but they were smashed and running by then.

So what if they were Russian military or militia? If they're attacking an oil base that's under our control they're asking for it, and we should give it to them. If they were Russian military the convoy would probably have been called back after that phone call. The Russian command threw the Wagner group under the bus.

This was the first nail in the coffin. It created a divide between the Russian MoD and Wagner. This divide only grew during the Ukraine War, with rifts between supply and area of operation. It ultimately lead to the Wagner rebellion in June 2023.

Dave and lady, I am not certain but I think the brrrt sound is an A-10 Warthog. There are several videos on this war machine on you tube. It fires 30mm shells. It was originally made to take out tanks. They are used for close air support often. Thus they are a ground soldiers best friend. Also the U.S. used the AC-130, along with the good old B-52's. Those birds are as old as I am. From the 1950's!!!!

So, this wasn't technically the first time Wagner and the US met each other, but it's the first timew the opened fire on each other. I forget if it was the 2013 attack on Georgia, or the 2014 attack on Ukraine, but the US had trainers in country helping with their military when Wagner lead the attacks. The US didn't want to start WW3 over Russian aggression towards a country we didn't have an alliance with, so told our troops to withdraw. Wagner soldiers taunted the nations defense forces, "The Americans taught you how to retreat well..." I like to think that's why they assumed the US troops would flee from combat again and why they went on a death march. The US wasn't in Ukraine or Georgia to fight, but they were in Syria to fight and defend, big difference. It was common practice for the Kremlin to send Wagner into an area they shouldn't be, occupy an area, then when people complain they send in the actual military to "investigate" and occupy the area, which frees up Wagner to go elsewhere. That's what the Russians were hoping for in Syria with this attack. And, to be fair, both the US and Soviets were very cautious to prevent WW3 from breaking out, as belligerent as both sides could be. There are a lot of stories of both sides resisting launching attacks over mistakes and false radar readings. All we can do is to hope that both sides concerned continue the great tradition of not ending humanity.
