The actual dev tools (using Lua and/or C) are actually available to everyone and an emulator is included, the problem with that is that you actually need real hardware to test performance since the emulator runs on your PC, with faster CPU, memory and SSD

I'm surprised they weren't able to leverage a technology like Docker to test running it locally at limited specs to simulate a real device. Maybe they have though or planning to do that. Obviously still not the real thing, but would be closer

It'd be awesome if these types of clueless takes didn't crop up every time like clockwork. No offense, the problem is not ONE person doing it. It just isn't viable, it's like kickstarting a water bottle that fills automatically from morning dew or something. Have some sense aobut how technology you use actually works, we pollute way too much to be this ignorant, in this language we type in. Killing some more chargeable batteries by fiddling with a crank recharge is not something we shold be looking into for our novelties. The whole notion shouldn't even enter a person's HEAD without immediately starting to wonder how it COULD be viable. Not this, "hurr, I've seen dynamos that look like this before, so my monkey brain hopes there was a dynamo like that here, too". And I do mean OUR universal monkey brains, as humans.

I've made a little game for it ("pop pop" on itch if anyone wanna try it out), and just the amount of care and appreciation in making it and seeing others playing it has made playdate like my favourite gaming device so far. I know this isn't a console emulation video but, Bob, you always get comments on your retro emulation videos about people saying "Why don't you just get a PSP, Vita, DS or, 3DS?" and, I think it would be a neat idea to do a big video covering emulation on all those devices, it would be a good way to shut those who are constantly telling you to use one of those devices and, a really good source of information for the people who still think about getting one of those, even to this day.

3:00 you steamdeck can "sideload" apps. If your referring to remote installing, you can do that via steam for steam games, or you can remote through a terminal and do it that way. Why would you need that though? You can just switch to desktop and get whatever you want then add that to steam. Kind of a moot point.

Steam Deck needs a remote install function from the PC Steam Client yes, though "side loading" non steam games can be done easily enough from the Deck's desktop mode which we can stream to PC via Steam Link for kb/m. Playdate certainly needs to open up their devkit for everyone, the more games that are made the better. I was hoping to make some games for it even if I never own one but I guess I gotta give up on that idea.

You know, before I saw this video, I always thought this was a GameBoy/GBC emulation handheld with a crank that charged the battery. And honestly? I think that'd still be a neat thing to have, especially if it can do GBA too. It wouldn't be something everyone NEEDS to buy, but I could totally see it being useful for people that go camping a lot, or do a lot of hiking and things. A GameBoy that doesn't require batteries or having a charged power bank with you at all times. I mean, imagine camping out in the woods, you're up late, sitting in your tent. You go to play some GameBoy, and oops, the battery is low. Just crank it for a bit and start playing.

I've had this lil guy since day one almost (was one of the first batch preorders). The lack of a lit screen does suck, but I really don't mind it as much as others do. The games releasing in pairs weekly can be crappy, especially on weeks where I didn't particularly like either game, but it helps me focus on what's out and in a way, challenges me to beat them in a week if they're story-based? What I will say is getting stuck in an RPG style game sucks big-time because there's really no guides for some of them, especially if they launched that day or recently. Everything works really well and smoothly, and as a graphic designer and coder I've been very tempted to try developing my own game using their software, but only time can tell.

Kinda wish that screen was a more-square aspect ratio and could be bought separately and dropped into an OG Gameboy or Gameboy Pocket, that would be legit.

Been kinda hyped for this since it was announced. It's really cool to get a bunch of games in a season. Reminds me more of a toy than a console. Mine won't be coming until the end of the year though, I think. When did you order yours? But yeah, a big draw to me is the open nature of development, the community around it, and the fact that I can try my hand at making a small game, too.

The price for it is ridiculous. They wasted so much money on the teenage engineering design fee so now to earn that cost back the stupid thing costs 150USD which is insane. Theres no reason why something this simple doesn't cost at most $40 USD. It has a nice open development environment but getting the console is so inaccessible

@@jovi9918 $40 is the less than the price of one game, and this comes with 24 games. $40 would never pay for the hardware and games unless you want game developers to be underpaid or hardware sold at a loss (which makes no sense at the moment because there's no way to make the cost back)

@@stride8845 are you joking me? A switch lite on sale is $150. The playdate is supposed to be a very simple retro console but for some reason has a modern console price tag, it has a 240p black and white screen with NO back light. It has a dpad, two buttons, and the crank is nothing more than a dial. The body is plastic and a small amount of aluminum. The board needs next to no processing power to run the games it is designed for. You can put together a raspberry Pi zero with these specs for under $60 easy.
