This is EXACTLY what I have been saying since I first saw her two years ago!!! I would advise all serious throwers to study dance as she did. When I was a thrower I used to describe it as "like dancing ballet with a heavy weight in one hand".

From what i've seen so far (as a coach): unlike men, where strenght plays a relevant role in order to manage a heavier discus, women relies much more on technique and speed. Comparing the 2 top-notch female throwers: Perkovic is very powerful in her throws, i dare to say she throws much more like a man do (extremely powerful block and monstrous arm sweep, like Robert Harting), while Allmann seems moving much faster in the circle especially in the reverse phase, where she makes the difference unleashing her own kinda/sorta of turbo boost wich gives her a crucial advantage. These 2 champions reminds me the achievment that Antony Washington did against Lars Riedel and Juergen Shult. While the two german guys throws like howitzers, the american moved in the circle like a twister XD

I like your comment. Not all of it is written in stone. There are some women out there that have real strength. Then in turn most men could improve their game if they took ballet lessons. Then too it depends what anatomy you have and working with it. Explains why there is a variance in styles but similar. Personally I don't like sports. But my daughters have a natural arm and like track. Especially shot and discus. So I am there to support them. My oldest daughter has a unique anatomy. Which lends her to through a discus well. But more than that, she is a good sportsman/women. Tomorrow is finals seeing if she can make it to state meet.

@@CaptainLeonatos yes, it is… otherwise, not angulating (dipping in the 3o’clock position, in her case)…they’d all be flat. Regarding the amount of force…she’s a speed athlete, unlike larger athletes such as Jared Rome, for example… velocity factor larger than strength - and good, bc she has a medium build for the event! Ciao.

I would love to get into contact with some of you coaches out there and ask some questions about developing technique through drills. I have a ton of work to do and I finished the season with bad technique throwing 51.06 meters in the discus. I know I’m not built like her but her technique was truly a chefs kiss. 👌🏽 I’ll be going through your channel finding videos to help me develop myself.

I also noticed that her left arm prior to her delivery goes short-long-short, instead of just long-short. maybe that might explain her better than normal rotational acceleration.

Dane, when the sweep leg comes out of the back, Valerie and Crouser both have their right foot quite high, just below their butt, but as they pivot, and their sweep leg hits 9 o'clock, the right heel is just below the left calf muscle. A lot of the drills that I've seen don't really emphasize that sweep path. They generally keep the sweep leg level like the 360 and go drills. Do you have any drills that would emphasize this path? I was thinking about putting a small box at the 12 o'clock position and sweeping over it while trying to keep the knees pointed out. I've always had a hard time getting athletes to do this transition properly. You mentioned, "getting around the left and sweeping down." Is that the coaching cue you usually use and do you have any others? Thank you for your time and you videos.

Her sweep leg was the way I was taught to throw in the early 80's. Get the trail leg high until midnight and then sprint to the center of the circle with a lowering sweep (Mac Wilkins, Wolfgang Schmidt, Ricky Bruch). When the fixed footers came in the sweep leg started much lower out of the back. I could never get that feeling down.

I'm not a discus thrower, (I long jumped and triple jumped in high school and college), so I'm probably not in a position to make any useful comments here. You did a very nice analysis of her technique in the circle but you didn't talk about her release. One of the things I noticed that Valerie does, that seems different from other discus throwers (and I could be entirely off base here), is she seems to keep her throwing angle a bit more shallow. Also, the discus seems to come off her hand in very good alignment with her throwing angle, so that the plate never fights the air on its journey. It seems that the throws of so many other throwers end up catching air and approach a vertical orientation on their descent.

Nice analysis of great technique. If I could be Coach Zeb for a day, the two things I would mention are 1) she does a double spin reverse--has she ever practiced some no-reverse throws--not that she should do no-reverse in comp, but it may help her get more transfer at the release rather than spilling it into the double spin, and 2) my neck hurts watching how her head comes out of the axis of rotation at release, and her head is whipped around. A little less prominent than a few years ago, but still...the head going forward may crowd the right shoulder albeit after release. I wonder about long-term cervical spine health too with that movement.

Hint of over-rotation on this throw IMO. I would like to see a switch to a braced left leg at the front of the circle, like Mr Riedel used to perform so effectively. His balance was exemplary after violently whipping his arm through. Rough on the left knee though!

Your title brings up a very valid issue: the "unbreakable" records from the drug-fueled 80's. Women runners are closing in on some of the sprint records (100 through 800), but the shot and disc remain "untouchable"... I think it is time the powers that be make a slight modification to the women's shot and discus (either weight, dimension, or combo of both) to set a new records system (it was done in the women's javelin in '99, when it was not really needed). I think only like one thrower in the last two years has maybe barely broken onto the list of the 100 throwers of all-time in the women's shot, and that throw was like 5 feet under the "world record." Imagine if the best male shot putters right now were throwing only in the high 60's ? Drugs basically killed off Track and Field as a "semi- major sport" that it once was. It's time to finally address the issues where they can be addressed (Women's shot and discus) and hope sprinters can eventually break some 80's records.
@et5222
@et5222 2 жыл бұрын
@@egbertmcfliesterheimer7133 huh? Are you actually saying that of the all-time top 50 women who have thrown the shot, the fact that 40 of them threw in the 70's and 80's is just because they worked harder, trained harder, had better technique and coaching?
@et5222
@et5222 2 жыл бұрын
@@egbertmcfliesterheimer7133 good as? She's 7 feet from the world record. I believe that would point to her not using drugs. She has the best training, coaches, technique, available technology, diet, implements, etc but still falls 7 feet short. Answer this question (as you ignored the last)- How many of the 40 out of 50 top women's shot putters, all from the 70's and 80's, do you believe competed "drug free" ? Almost all are from the Eastern Bloc (primarily Russia and East Germany). I'm not whining about the reality of the 70's and 80's, I'm just sad because that drug fueled era (continuing up to the BALCO days) pretty much took track and field out of serious consideration as a viable major sport. Records became a joke. Two of them still are (womens shot and disc)
@et5222
@et5222 2 жыл бұрын
@@egbertmcfliesterheimer7133 To anwer your other question, I'd go with 2016 Olympic Gold medalist Michelle Carter as being pretty world class. Deanna Price's 80 meters in the hammer is pretty world class (#2 thrower on world all-time list). Obviously Allman is world class. Hasn't been a great javelin thrower in a decade since Kara Winger. So its been since 2010, 2016, 2020, and 2021 to answer your question.

I tend to compare male athletes to male athletes and female athletes to female athletes, due to skeletal and physiological differences, and the difference weight of the discus. I would use Perkovic or Jahl as a technical model for female athletes, and Schulte or Schmidt as models for male throwers. I admire Allman greatly but Perkovic has achieved much more, so far, and neither athlete is done, both still throwing. I think it is wrong of Dane to talk of real world record-holder because he is essentially saying athletes who never failed a drug tests were not legitimate, and such blanket condemnations are wrong and unfair...
