Back when I was in high school still getting great grades, James Franklin was the head coach for Vanderbilt, and I was thinking I wanted to go to a good academic school with a decent football team, Duke was the home state option but I didn't like the way a lot of Duke fans acted, so at the end of my Sophomore year in high school it was still my goal to get to Vanderbilt, it would be an insanely tough Mountain to climb, but then my grades started slipping similar to the Vanderbilt football team at that time, still good enough grades to get enough grant money to go to a recently promoted to FBS level school in the city I lived in UNC Charlotte, be it the commute and bus travel or what have you but my grades began to bottom out (or so I thought) and I had to transfer to CPCC in 2018 and over the next 2 years my grades went lower than I ever thought I could do and I realized college was not for me, sometimes I do wonder how my life would be different if I had not let my grades begin to falter in high school and if I kept them good enough to get a scholarship to Vanderbilt, but I can say I'm happy in life, and Vanderbilt being good at football does make me smile. Maybe I should start looking for someone to date again? Sorry for the ADHD style rant/whatever you want to call it.

Vanderbilt lost a lot to graduation in Franklin's last year. He also "poached" most of the incoming recruiting class on his way out to Penn State. His very late departure, after only weeks before saying he was going nowhere, and just before signing day, along with Vanderbilt scrambling to find a new HC, left almost zero time to recover that year's recruiting class. Further, Mason, had almost no time to assemble a coaching staff before signing day. Add to that fact that VU had just lost 4 players that would have been either starters or key contributers to a rape scandal over that past Summer. Though, at the time, most of the media was hailing Mason as a solid hire, I am not going to say Mason was fully prepared to be a HC at that time, but the timing of it all certainly did him no favors. He did go on to beat Tennessee two more times in his VU tenure and got VU to the Texas Bowl. I often wonder how Mason would have done had he been hired under better conditions. I don't share the same view as many VU fans that feel he inherited a winning team.

Bobby Johnson was not fired. He suddenly, and legitimately, retired only weeks before the 2010 season which is why Caldwell was retained as interim HC. The VU Admin was completely blindsided by the news.

NIL was a perfect development for a school with a very uncommon amount of old money supporting it. There's no reason Vandy shouldn't be the Georgia of this new era.

A lot of derek mason's struggles can be attributed to james franklin. The manner in which franklin left the program pretty much ruined any future prospects for continuing to build upon success

@@Oregonmanpart2 no, no he did not. When Franklin left, he gave exactly zero indication of what his actual plans were. It was such a shit show that the Vanderbilt AD had absolutely no clue that he was even leaving. Then, not only did he throw David Williams under the bus but he also poached recruits from Vandy and essentially left Mason with zero help. Additionally, Franklin relied entirely upon recruit star rating and gimmicks/tricks to get his wins and success. There was no long term plan in place for what he wanted the Commodores to be. As such, Mason was essentially left with a near completely bare cupboard with very few prospects of success within the first year let alone 5-6 years down the line. Also, Franklin won with Bobby Johnson's recruits. Most if not all of the players Feanklin brought in either left or did not pan out into anything worthwhile, which tells me that he a) did not have a plan and b) was actual shit at developing players. Cunningham was already one of the best linebackers in the SEC when Felranklin got there. And Matthews was already uncoverable. So no, James Franklin did the program no favors with how he left. The manner in which he left, left a very sour taste in the majority of our fanbase's mouths, and I for ine rejoiced when he did not see immediate success at Penn State.

@@Oregonmanpart2 i stand corrected, Zach Cunningham was one of the few Franklin recruits that panned out ,but he got there in 2013, in the middle of Franklin's tenure. He did not play a down until his redshirt Sophomore year under Derek Mason. He did not break through as a star until 2015, which was two years after Franklin left the program. Frankl8n may have recruited him, but he did NOT develop him. And my point on Matthews was that Franklin did recruit him, but rather found ways to utilize him during his three years there. It was the same with Chris Boyd. Again, the vast majority of the recruits that Franklin either left or failed to turn into anything worthwhile. He chased star ratings and not an actual team strategy.

I want Arkansas and Vandy to play each other. Both are teams the SEC tries to forget in football both on the rise this season and both knocked off highly ranked teams they shouldnt have. It would just be a dope meeting between 2 teams with hard nosed mentalities.

They’ve been in the SEC since it wasn’t even called the SEC, are one of the few programs located in a larger city, are an amazing academic school (arguably the best or second best school in the southeast), and lastly are a baseball powerhouse.

@@stischer47 OK, I have heard of Notre Dame, Army, Navy, and even schools like Harvard, Yale, and U of Chicago being powerhouses back in the day, but never Vanderbilt. It seems to be very difficult for a private, top-25 academic institution to field a competitive football program in the modern era. Stanford might be the best example. Northwestern will also have a spark here and there.
