Hello everyone! Even though anime was made in Japan, it might never exist if it weren't for Walt Disney! Yes, it might be hard to believe, but he was such a huge influence on many of Japan's greatest manga artists, especially Osamu Tezuka! Let's see how this American innovator influenced Japan's most well-known art style!

Today in Japan, even just admitting you watch anime, PERIOD, would have your friends and co-workers calling the police on you…. But if it helps any, yes, we fans in the west are also getting weary of “I Quit My Job, Was Hit By a Car, and Woke Up in an Alternate Universe Where I’m Now a Virgin Wizard, But I Can’t Tell the Princess, Who I Found Out is My Old School Senpai That Hates Me!”

@eli_rook
@eli_rook 6 ай бұрын
@@ericbreaux6124 iirc, the big eyes and goofy proportions are relatively recent stylistic changes in manga and anime history. Most anime that I remember watching that aired prior to the mid-2000s favored realistic character design. It’s really been in the last two decades that unrealistic proportions became the norm. And really that’s all it is, a style choice. There was never a hard-fast rule saying that anime has to use a particular art style in order to be anime.

Meanwhile, when SEGA hit the Italian market with its SEGA Mastersystem game consol, the company had to slightly change the pronounciation of the brand into | see-gah | (like in "to see", or "sea"), because a "sega" in Italian is a vulgar word describing what a guy does while giving pleasure to himself 😅

Oddly, Disney's Bambi was based partly on Chinese art styles. The cartoon character Betty Boop was an inspiration for anime including the big eyes. As part of a cultural exchange between Japan and the United States, Paramount Pictures provided a musical short starring Betty Boop in "A Language Of My Own". In the audience was the man who is considered the grandfather of Japanese anime and he used Betty as the model for some future characters he had planned. You can find the Betty Boop cartoon here on KZbin.

In the anime for Tezuka’s “Bagi”, the villainess not only uses “Mirror, mirror on the wall” to open her communication screen, but sends out a henchman assassin to bring back the heroine’s heart…Yes, in the Wicked Queen’s heart-box. I’m not sure whether that was in Tezuka’s original manga, or whether the anime team was having a little fun with Osamu’s Disney fandom. 😅

And then…there’s Jungle Emperor vs. Lion King (where Tezuka’s estate did sue Disney, but without incident), that diehard Disney loyalists and hypnotized 90’s kids still deny to this day: 🦁🙄 Anime was almost literally UNKNOWN in the US before the early 90’s, apart from cheap dubbed afternoon kids shows, and f you were one of the underground fans in the late 80’s, you always heard “Japanese animation? Oh, I remember Astro Boy, Speed Racer and Kimba from the 60’s!”

Thank you so much for this video! I've tried explaining this to so many who have no idea how much the US influenced the growth and direction of Anime and Manga. I was in Japan in the early and mid '70s and saw the beginning of the "comics" explosion, and could see the big-eyed, infantilizing resemblance to Disney, Barbie, etc. And, absolutely loved your opener about the older guy ... your thoughts were exactly how I experience such news reports. If you wondered why (depending on art style) many anime characters appear a bit more western than Asian, here is your answer. The general art style is a direct descendant of western animation. Look at the spokes in Astro boys hair. Identical position to Mickey mouse’s ears 😄 (Sailor moon would be forced by her school to dye her hair black at least according to one naturally blonde hafu I spoke with)

The first published animation of Walt Disney occured in 1928 (steam boat willie). The earliest piece of Japanese animation found to date is from 1907 called Katsudō Shashin (活動写真). The film is only 3 seconds long and consists of just fifty frames showing a boy dressed in a sailor suit drawing the characters for Katsudō Shashin. Shingachō: Meian no Shippai was released in February 1917. The title for this video is an incorrect statement.

By the way-- it's not Japanese Denny's by any means, but you should look up "what the f**k is up, Denny's" on here. An American hardcore punk band played a show in an abandoned Denny's in California a few years back. Funny stuff! Another fun and interesting fact regarding Denny's is that the famous mangaka Eguchi Hisashi (who wrote the awesome and very ahead-of-it's-time manga "Stop Hibari-kun!!") did illustrations for the Denny's menu at one point! So cool!!

I love how Disney is the company that is now animating whatever story they can instead of putting hard work into it like they used to (which is what many anime like Demon Slayer, Jujutsu Kaisen, Ranking of Kings, and the upcoming Chainsaw Man are doing right now)

One thing that I think is a fundamental part of what makes manga and anime is definitely Hokusai Manga, the sketchbooks of Katsushika Hokusai. I had no interest in manga and anime when I came to Japan, but when I sort of found the missing links in between the traditional arts and saw the lineage leading to their modern counterparts, I came to understand it a lot more (at least to some extent). The sketches of Hokusai are so vivid and alive they ARE animation in their own right. There are even series of movements drawn as separate images on the same page, so they are practically the same thing unanimated. And as an animator myself I instantly fell in love with those sketches, because animation is at its best an art that is created inside the mind of the viewer, practically it is nothing else but still images that trick your brain into thinking there is movement or dimension. That is what I love about it, series of still images, and the rest is up to the supercomputer you carry inside your skull!

I think it is interesting in the perception of 7-Eleven owning the Denny's franchise in Japan means excellent quality food and ingredients, where as if the American Denny's was owned by the American 7-Eleven, Americans would have the exact opposite perception.

In my area all of the former Speedway locations are starting to phase in 7-Eleven structure. I am not optimistic that it will improve the stores.

I guess because 711 in Asia is just different. We love 711 here. Too bad in my country the brand failed (due to the owner being corrupted last I heard and competitor from 2 local brands)

I wish Osamu Tezuka was more popular in America. Manga often is easier to find and takes up more space in book stores than American graphic novels. It's easy to find "classic" novels, but it's difficult to find "classic" comics and manga. The Donald Duck and Uncle Scrooge comics are actually more popular in Europe than America.
