How was Leona Kingscholar changed in the English Version of Twisted Wonderland?

He's a completely nuanced character. Everything he does is subtle. Self serving and self deprecating while still arrogant and prideful. He also does have a soft spot but wayyyyy too deep down as seen in Ruggie's story. Intelligent, wise yet cunning, Leona can come off as a very interesting character but was downplayed so bad in both JP and ENG. TBH knowing that his age gap with his brother quite makes sense why he is the way he is. 10 years I mean why would people compare a child to his older brother. Also in Tamashina Muina event, Kifaji said that Leona was a crybaby as a child which is so cute.

@@ninanisbet5004In the OP of Piece of My World we saw a glimpse of what it seems to be like tears and when Jack and Ruggie came, Leona goes back to his normal expression. It goes to show that he doesn't want people to see him in his vulnerable state due to his own pride.

It feels like the English translation is making the characters fit into more familiar stereotypes which take away from their original charm and character 😭

I love Leona a lot and seeing people misunderstand him in english translations makes me upset. Now I hope people can learn the real Leona Kingscholar with this video :D

[points at EN leona] look how they massacred my boy! but like in all seriousness, i feel like a big reason book 2 rarely gives a good first playthrough impression on EN players is exactly bc of how his main reason for overblotting was completely written out, making it difficult to understand his motivations for all his scheming. anyways, thanks again for another great video! it's always so fun to learn about these differences :)

It would do wonders in that, in their road for redemption or changing for the better would feel more earned if, to say, they acted more the part. This is a game about character growth and finding oneself through the means of how a past does not define you. So, I wouldn't be that surprise if that was the route they going for, but, it's honestly up in the air as well.

@@t.thomas8919Despite their character development no matter how subtle, they still don't change the fact they're still wicked. Yana has no intention of making them completely good because where's the charm of it when they drop out their bad side. Hence the morally grey scale of their personalities.

I’ll never understand why they removed any references to Falena. Book 2 needs a rewrite srsly As for the last part I prefer the ENG line. Tho I didn’t find it demeaning for Leona to put himself first, I felt it showed how Leona sees himself in Jamil yet he’s stuck in life whereas Jamil isn’t. So Jamil’s future can easily change if Jamil changes his outlook where as Leona’s can’t no matter what he does.

Wow, this makes so much sense. I have a few friends who got into the game later than I did and just finished book 2 recently and they really don't like Leona. I was slightly confused and have been thinking about these changes. Turns out, little changes can go a long way. Thank you for a great video ❤

I only play the eng ver and I really didn't understand & didn't like the character (I found him cool & hot but personnality wise it's not my cup of tea). But when I started reading fanfics or others fans related contents, I started to realized they were picturing a character I really didn't know at all. This video make me change my view on Leona & all the chapter two. Thank you! I finally get the character a little better now!

When I was reading through Book 2 of that moment, how they changed that Leona even though brings up his brother in Jp, yet in En is doing what he can to just further himself away from his brother. It honestly works in a way, as it ties his flashback to those kinds of call outs. In En it's like Leona's brother is a curse he doesn't want to bitter his tongue on and goes roundabout way in speaking of him, using others as a temp replacement. That's just how I saw it though, adding to the extra words or other lines in showing how jaded his past has made him. Leads me to be wondering how his hometown event will play out then, I'm excited, really. This was very fascinating to watch! Thank you! XD

wahh what the actual f? I play EN and was wondering why my friend who plays JP hates EN so much and often shames the translation. So this is why. Wonder what reason they made such decision? To make it less dark or family friendly or sth? Now I'm soo on boat with my friend >:( I was lucky enough to love his characters more through his vignettes Thank you for the great video

Book six Leona is written so much better than book two Leona in the English honestly

I feel that all of the versions (IDK if I would include the manga since it wasn't finished yet) but the Novel did justice and complexity in Leona's character.

I wonder why this changed so much. I feel like Leona got the short end of the stick in a lot of ways... I feel like the ENG translation has it out for him. And I don't know why?

It's probably because whoever was in charge of those translations is one of those toxic-minded people who believe that interfamilial conflicts should be swept under the rug and ignored, even if that means gaslighting the affected party into compliance, because "FAMILY". It's an unfortunately common problem, particularly if the people involved in the conflict are siblings.

@@leshyaedawnfire It's a very plausible theory, and it's upsetting. Because these changes WEAKEN Leona. They didn't make him a relatable character because of it. Heck, there are SO MANY missed opportunities with Leona, and it upsets me. There are so many elements to his character that get overlooked. Like the toxic relationships IN and AROUND royal families for one. And there are just aspects of Leona that don't add up because it wasn't acknowledged.

I AM SO ANGRY ABOUT HOW DIRTY THEY DID LEONA. Chapter 2 was rough already and fell a bit weak compared to others, but removing all references to Falena hurt his character even more. I feel like I have to make a disclaimer to anyone before I can actually recommend the English version. They cut off a lot of really important context with those dialogue changes.

Okay, here is where I really agree the translations shouldn't have been changed this much. The references to Falena should have been kept in Book 2. I THINK, maybe, as a guess, the reason it was taken out and instead changed to something which makes him look more immature is because...he is? Honestly? In so many events and other areas of the game, we see that he does have this weird mix of inferiority complex with his superiority complex. Sometimes he'll wave off insults just because he doesn't want the hassle of dealing with them, and he can even put himself down for the sake of giving himself less work, but sometimes he gets VERY defensive and angry when he's mocked. So Leona is indeed self-conscious and immature. HOWEVER, that's showcased just fine in other parts of the game and shouldn't have been made part of the plot for Book 2. This is a huge plot AND character change.
