Since The Internet Historian's video, Hello Games released almost 20 additional "major" updates and countless minor updates. The last one, Echoes Update v4.4, was released in August this year (followed by 5 more minor patch) and it promised "more to come". Although they are still working on No Man's Sky, Hello Games have released a small indie title in the meantime, and announced that work had begun on their next major project. I don't expect them to release more NMS updates for that many more years to come.

TLDR: The internet and a good portion of the gaming community didn't get the full picture and see the full story. Also they assume that everything bad in the world is the result of a mustache-twirling Saturday morning cartoon villain because they can't grasp anything that's not black and white. Kinda similar to the situation now...

Back in 2020 or 2021, I forget which, at the game awards, when everything was still being done over Zoom cause of the pandemic, NMS was nominated for the “best ongoing game” category. And it won. But hilariously Sean was so convinced it wouldn’t win he was mid drink of his soda when the award was announced and almost choked.

Consider that the game was about 8 gbs in total size, and that 8 gig update comes out. That doubled the size of the game. And also remember, the game released with trillions of planets to explore. That was always there, and a big part of the hype. So that main promise was kept from day one. They still release new updates to this day. I personally pumped hundreds of hours into the game and I've enjoyed almost all of it, save for the occasional bug. It shares a great many high points with Minecraft, so you would likely enjoy it, just with a couple extra survival aspects to heighten the difficulty a bit. And it also has crossplay, so multiplayer is also a big part of it. I highly recommend it if you ever want an alternative to Minecraft.

I put a TON of the release hype and interview issues squarely on Sony's shoulders. They walked up to a SIX PERSON TEAM, said 'have all this money for promotion' and didn't even give them a single person to help manage that promotion, not even someone to coach Sean for five minutes on how to handle interviews. So Sean was left doing a half dozen different jobs that would normally be handled by a few dozen people. It's really no wonder that he essentially went feral in the last months before launch. Also, the Hello Games team didn't LEAVE the awards show, they just never went in the first place. With all of the dumpstering they were getting why would they want to put themselves on camera when they were entirely certain they weren't going to win anything?
@dacomputernerd409611 ай бұрын
The people in the beta were confused because after leaving the planet, it spun under them, so they landed in a different area Also, they've continued from there. Another update every 3 months. They have just about filled in that spreadsheet (except for things that actually got cut) Still no DLC, no microtransactions, nothing. You literally cannot put more money into the game even if you want to. Also, for Sean's reaction, he said everyone should watch the video, but probably skip the ending. You know he saw the ending, and he did not like it lol

I actually pre-ordered the game, but by the time it came out I had somewhat lost interest, played it for a few hours, got bored and moved on. I kinda forgot about it until the Foundation update dropped. I started getting back into it, and it was pretty fun, and the constant updates kept the game fresh and improved the game immensely. It's kinda crazy how Hello Game is, to this day, still putting out updates and improving on NMS, still with no paid dlc and no microtransactions, it's still just a 1 time purchase. To me, the story of No Man's Sky's development is inspiring, and also a cautionary tale about managing PR.

I often think, what if the trailer and media circuit that Sean Murray did for this game never showed over promised features? What if it only ever showed what they knew was going to be in the game and not what they hoped would be in it? Well for 1, the hype wouldn’t have been as big, but at the same time that would mean when it released, it would have been what was expected. Meaning would Hello Games have ever even ended up adding in everything they did? I think the main reason NMS is such a good game now is because of Hello Games’ optimism and mistakes made originally up until release. It meant they had to have that moment where they decided to do everything they could to improve the game and try to deliver on as many of those features they teased in the years leading up to release. If they had never been driven enough to put those things in their trailers and talk about them, no body would have really complained the way they did about the game, and there would have been barely any incentive to continue working on it the way they have. So in a way, the way this all went down ended up being the best thing for the game and for Hello Games. Because if they never overpromised and under delivered, the game would likely have barely been touched after release and would still be basically what it was on release, just with bug fixes

You can't compare it Fallout 76, because that game was so poorly optimized and broken that it took a 50GB patch, and that barely even fixed the problems, and it wasn't even adding extra content. Most games patches aren't that big in size. The reason No Man's Sky patches/extensions have been so big, is because they have added so much extra content in each one they release.

I like Internet Historian, but going to be honest, Sean still lied during development, I mean, he was obviously in over his head and the media did exaggerate things, but he was lying as well. The vertical slice gameplay demonstration that he claimed was completely random and not pre-made is 100% proof of that, as well as him not really clarifying things. I honestly think it was a situation were they knew they were going to release a buggy project, but assumed they'd make enough money off of the release to just fix it after release... like a lot of modern games.
@AmericanBrit983411 ай бұрын
Yes but he has more than made up for the lies. A majority of the lies were exaggeration by the media.

Yeah, but the difference is that he actually fixed the game and did so for free. @freedantheeternal11 ай бұрын
No Man's Sky is an amazing redemption story of the industry, but Sean's also made comments now that he thinks more "failure" games should be given second chances as well, and he's completely wrong about that.
