No, it was made to displace water, so ice wouldn't build up in the spaceship during takeoff. WD stands for water displacement.

That stock footage of spraying WD-40 on the lamp knob and sprockets drives me nuts. It looks like a toddler is using it.

Used to be better back when it was made with #7 mineral oil. It burned a lot easier and was a quick and easy way to run an engine with a bad carb. That way the engine could be evaluated before having to spend any time and money on it. Worked great for two-strokes; kept them lubed while they ran.

And it turns out his employees were taking it home, stealing it, using it for everything. You and I use it for today instead of punishing them. He changed the company name to WD-40 and the rest is history. I heard it was also used on torpedoes
